Abstract

A network file transfer and caching system is presented. The system provides multiple access utilities to select and transfer files to other users. The system is of particular use where the size of the files precludes transfer by other means such as e-mail attachments. The system is uniquely integrated into the operating systems by providing right click context menu file selection and process initiation. New utilities enable improved workflow by providing download information without the need to wait for completion of the network transfer process. Network transfer processes may progress in the background without user oversight or intervention. Files are cached and securely available to selected receivers of the files. The caching process may be managed by selected parameters related to number of downloads and time limits for availability of downloads.

Claims

1. A network file transfer and caching system comprising:

a) a file selection process,

b) a process to generate a destination URL,

c) a file upload process,

d) a file cache management process, and

e) a file download process.

2. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the system is encoded both as a web based program and as a locally executable program.

3. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the file selection process includes a right click context menu.

4. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the process to generate a destination URL is completed prior to the completion of the file upload process.

5. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the file upload process is may be interrupted and restarted.

6. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the file selection process further includes the capability to select files from multiple different storage locations.

7. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the cache management process comprises a caching parameter set unique to each execution of the file selection process.

8. The file transfer and caching system of claim 7 further comprising a means to override the caching parameter set.

9. The file transfer and caching system of claim 1 wherein the cache management process comprises file transfer status and history processes.

10. A client-server communication network comprising a server processor and a plurality of client processors connected to the server processor wherein each client processor includes programmed means to select files, to generate a destination URL, to upload files the server processor, to select cache management parameters and to download files from the server processor, and, the server includes means to select files, generate a destination URL, to upload files from the client processors, to select cache management parameters and to download files to the client processors.

11. The client-server communication network of claim 10 wherein the client processor means to select files includes means to select files from more than one of the plurality of client processors.

12. The client-server communication network of claim 10 wherein the client processor means to select files includes means to select files through a right click initiated context menu.

13. The client-server communication network of claim 10 wherein the client processor means to generate a destination URL includes means to generate the destination URL prior to completion of a file upload by the means to upload files.

14. The client-server communication network of claim 10 wherein the server processor means to generate a destination URL includes means to generate the destination URL prior to completion of a file upload by the server means to upload files.

15. The client-server communication network of claim 10 wherein a user of said network may optionally access the client processor means to select files, generate a destination URL, to upload files from the client processors, to select cache management parameters and to download files to the client processor or the server processor means to select files, generate a destination URL, to upload files from the client processors, to select cache management parameters and to download files to the client processors.
