Abstract

Arrangements for the detection of the presence and/or concentration of an analyte in a sample of bodily fluid include diffuse transmission, diffuse reflection and edge or waveguide illumination arrangements. A vertical flow assay arrangement and/or technique is also disclosed, and includes a detection component that can be in the form of an array of optical detection elements. A number of assay pad constructions are described which may include at least one or more of the following components: a prefilter component, a reflective component, a membrane component, a reagent component, a mesh component, and a component to prevent lateral spreading.

59. An arrangement for use in detecting the presence or concentration of an analyte present in bodily fluid, the arrangement comprising:

(a) an assay pad adapted to receive a sample of the bodily fluid, the assay pad containing a reagent;

(b) at least one detector adapted to produce a signal indicative of a reaction between the analyte and the reagent;

(c) electronics monitoring and interpreting the signals produced by the at least one detector to provide at least one of the following;

(i) an estimate of the volume of the sample under analysis; and

(ii) information about the kinetics of the reaction between the analyte and the reagent based at least in part on the time between signals.

60. The arrangement of claim 59, wherein the electronics provide both (i) and (ii).

61. The arrangement of claim 59, wherein the electronics further comprise at least one corrective algorithm.

62. The arrangement of claim 59, wherein the electronics generate an overall reading based on the signals produced by the individual detectors.

63. The arrangement of claim 59, further comprising a skin penetration member.

64. The arrangement of claim 63, wherein the skin penetration member comprises a microneedle.

65. The arrangement of claim 59, further comprising a chamber for receiving the sample of bodily fluid.

66. The arrangement of claim 65, wherein the assay pad is disposed in the chamber.

67. The arrangement of claim 59, further comprising at least one light source adapted to provide light incident upon the assay pad.

68. The arrangement of claim 59, wherein the least one detector comprises an array of detectors.

69. The arrangement of claim 68, wherein the array of detectors comprises a linear array.

71. The arrangement of claim 68, wherein the array of detectors comprises an array of CMOS detectors.

72. A method useful in detecting the presence or concentration of an analyte present in bodily fluid, the method comprising:

(a) introducing a sample of the bodily fluid onto an assay pad, the assay pad containing a reagent;

(b) producing at least one signal upon a reaction between the analyte and the reagent, producing the at least one signal with at least one detector;

(c) monitoring and interpreting the at least one signal to provide at least one of;

(i) an estimate of the volume of the sample under analysis; and

(ii) information about the kinetics of the reaction between the analyte and the reagent based at least in part on the time between signals.

73. The method of claim 72, wherein (c) comprises both (i) and (ii).

74. The method of claim 72, wherein (c) further comprises applying at least one corrective algorithm to the at least one signal.

75. The method of claim 72, wherein (c) further comprises generating an overall reading based on the signals produced by the at least one detector.

76. The method of claim 72, further comprising providing a skin penetration member.

77. The method of claim 76, wherein the skin penetration member comprises a microneedle.

78. The method of claim 72, further comprising providing a chamber for receiving the sample of bodily fluid.

79. The method of claim 78, wherein (a) further comprises disposing the assay pad in the chamber.

80. The method of claim 72, further comprising providing light incident upon the assay pad.

81. The method of claim 72, wherein (b) comprises producing the at least one signal with an array of detectors.

82. The method of claim 81, wherein the array of detectors comprises a linear array.

83. The method of claim 81, wherein the array of detectors comprises an array of CMOS detectors.
