Abstract

The present invention relates generally to obtaining information from a profile associated with a proprietor of a media object (e.g., video, images and/or audio), where the proprietor may change information within the profile from time to time. One claim recites a method including: receiving an identifier via the internet from a device including or communicating with a content processor that derives the identifier from sample values representing audio portions of a media object or from sample values representing picture portions of the media object; utilizing the identifier to interrogate a database; obtaining from the database at least some information from a profile associated with a proprietor of the media object, wherein the database is configured to allow a proprietor to change information within the profile; and providing the at least some information from the profile associated with the proprietor of the media object to a remote location. Other combinations are provided and claimed as well.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving an identifier from a content processor that derives the identifier from sample values representing an audio or image media object;

providing the identifier to a remote database via the internet;

receiving from the database at least some information from a profile associated with a proprietor of the audio or image media object.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the content processor comprises a digital watermark decoder.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the content processor derives the identifier using at least pattern matching.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the database allows a proprietor to change information within its profile.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the image media object comprises video.

7. A computer readable medium comprising instructions stored therein or circuitry to perform the method of claim 1.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the profile includes the proprietor'"'"'s name or contact information.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the identifier is derived from steganographic data hidden in the audio or image media object.

2. The method of claim 2, wherein the identifier is steganographically hidden in the media object, said identifier being hidden in the media object with the following acts:

compressing a compressed encoded audio or image media object, the encoded media object comprising the identifier hidden therein;

determining whether the identifier is sufficiently hidden in the decompressed encoded media object based on first criteria; and

embedding the identifier the decompressed encoded media object if the identifier is not sufficiently hidden.

10. A method comprising:

receiving an identifier via the internet from a device including or communicating with a content processor that derives the identifier from sample values representing audio portions of a media object or from sample values representing picture portions of the media object;

utilizing the identifier to interrogate a database;

obtaining from the database at least some information from a profile associated with a proprietor of the media object, wherein the database is configured to allow a proprietor to change information within the profile;

providing the at least some information from the profile associated with the proprietor of the media object to a remote location.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the content processor comprises a digital watermark decoder.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the content processor derives the identifier using at least pattern matching.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the media object comprises video.

14. A computer readable medium comprising instructions stored therein or circuitry to perform the method of claim 10.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the profile includes the proprietor'"'"'s name or contact information.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the identifier is derived from steganographic data hidden in the media object.

17. A system comprising:

an input coupled to receive an identifier via the internet, the identifier having been communicated from a device including or communicating with a content processor, the content processor having derived the identifier from sample values representing audio portions of a media object or from sample values representing picture portions of the media object;

a database; and

a controller including or cooperating with at least processing circuitry to;

obtain from the database at least some information from a profile associated with a proprietor of the media object, wherein the database is configured to allow a proprietor to change information within the profile; and

provide the at least some information from the profile associated with the proprietor of the media object to a remote location.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the content processor comprises a digital watermark decoder.

19. The system of claim 17 wherein the content processor derives the identifier using at least pattern matching.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the media object comprises video.
