Abstract

In accordance with some embodiments, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a device with a touch screen display is disclosed. In the method, an electronic document is displayed at a first magnification. A gesture is detected on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount. In response to detecting the gesture, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification less than the first magnification. If a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on or near the touch screen display, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed. Upon detecting termination of the gesture, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

a touch screen display;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for;

displaying an electronic document at a first magnification;

detecting a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification less than the first magnification, in response to detecting the gesture;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed, if a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on or near the touch screen display; and

displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a web page.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a digital image.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a word processing, spreadsheet, email or presentation document.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are black, gray, a solid color, or white.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are visually distinct from the document.

12. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

at a device with a touch screen display;

displaying an electronic document at a first magnification;

detecting a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification less than the first magnification, in response to detecting the gesture;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed, if a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on or near the touch screen display; and

displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 12, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 12, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 12, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 12, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 12, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

18. A graphical user interface on a device with a touch screen display, comprising:

an electronic document having a document length and a document width, to be displayed on the touch screen display at multiple magnifications including a first magnification; and

areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document;

wherein;

in response to detecting a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount, wherein the gesture is detected while displaying the electronic document at the first magnification, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification less than the first magnification;

if the document length or document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on or near the touch screen display, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed; and

upon detecting termination of the gesture, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed.

19. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

20. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

21. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

22. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

23. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

24. A computer readable storage medium having stored therein instructions, which when executed by a device with a touch screen display, cause the device to:

display an electronic document at a first magnification;

detect a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount;

display the electronic document at a magnification less than the first magnification, in response to detecting the gesture;

display the electronic document at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed, if a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on or near the touch screen display; and

display the electronic document at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

25. The computer readable storage medium of claim 24, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

26. The computer readable storage medium of claim 24, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

27. The computer readable storage medium of claim 24, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

28. The computer readable storage medium of claim 24, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

29. The computer readable storage medium of claim 24, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.
