Abstract

Phase of an output signal is based on comparison of an oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold. Here, adjustment of the threshold results in a corresponding adjustment of the phase of the output signal. For example, the adjustable threshold may comprise an adjustable bias signal for a transistor circuit whereby the oscillating signal is provided as an input to the transistor circuit and the output of the transistor circuit provides the output signal. In some aspects these phase adjustment techniques may be employed to provide one or more tunable multiphase clocks.

Claims

1. An apparatus for providing a signal, comprising:

an oscillator circuit configured to provide an oscillating signal;

a comparator configured to compare the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal; and

a threshold circuit configured to generate the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a data memory configured to store a set of adjustable threshold values, each of which is associated with a different phase offset for the output signal;

wherein the threshold circuit is further configured to select one of the adjustable threshold values to skew the phase of the output signal.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

at least one other comparator configured to compare the oscillating signal with at least one other adjustable threshold to provide at least one other output signal;

wherein the threshold circuit is further configured to generate the at least one other adjustable threshold to skew a phase of each of the at least one other output signal.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising:

a data memory configured to store a set of adjustable threshold values, each of which is associated with a different phase offset;

wherein the threshold circuit is further configured to select at least one of the set of adjustable threshold values to skew the phases of the output signals.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the comparator comprises an inverter having an adjustable decision threshold that determines a level of the oscillating signal that causes the inverter to switch polarity of the output signal; and

adjustment of the adjustable threshold alters the decision threshold.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the comparator comprises a transistor circuit having an adjustable bias; and

adjustment of the adjustable threshold adjusts the bias.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the oscillator circuit comprises a crystal oscillator coupled in parallel with an inverter.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the threshold circuit is implemented in a tracking loop; and

the tracking loop is configured to skew the phase of the output signal to track a phase of another signal.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the another signal comprises a clock signal that is recovered from a received signal.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the oscillator circuit has a quality factor on the order of 10 or more.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a data recovery circuit configured to recover data from ultra-wideband pulses based on the output signal.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the ultra-wideband pulses are associated with a fractional bandwidth on the order of 20% or more, a bandwidth on the order of 500 MHz or more, or a fractional bandwidth on the order of 20% or more and a bandwidth on the order of 500 MHz or more.

13. A method of providing a signal, comprising:

providing an oscillating signal;

comparing the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal; and

generating the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

storing a set of adjustable threshold values, each of which is associated with a different phase offset for the output signal;

wherein the generation of the adjustable threshold comprises selecting one of the adjustable threshold values to skew the phase of the output signal.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

comparing the oscillating signal with at least one other adjustable threshold to provide at least one other output signal; and

generating the at least one other adjustable threshold to skew a phase of each of the at least one other output signal.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

storing a set of adjustable threshold values, each of which is associated with a different phase offset;

wherein the generation of the at least one other adjustable threshold comprises selecting at least one of the set of adjustable threshold values to skew the phases of the output signals.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein:

the comparison is performed by an inverter that has an adjustable decision threshold that determines a level of the oscillating signal that causes the inverter to switch polarity of the output signal; and

adjustment of the adjustable threshold alters the decision threshold.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein:

the comparison is performed by a transistor circuit having an adjustable bias; and

adjustment of the adjustable threshold adjusts the bias.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the oscillating signal is provided by an oscillator circuit comprising a crystal oscillator coupled in parallel with an inverter.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein:

the generation of the adjustable threshold is implemented in a tracking loop; and

the tracking loop skews the phase of the output signal to track a phase of another signal.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the another signal comprises a clock signal that is recovered from a received signal.

22. The method of claim 13, wherein an oscillator circuit that provides the oscillating signal has a quality factor on the order of 10 or more.

23. The method of claim 13, further comprising recovering data from ultra-wideband pulses based on the output signal.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the ultra-wideband pulses are associated with a fractional bandwidth on the order of 20% or more, a bandwidth on the order of 500 MHz or more, or a fractional bandwidth on the order of 20% or more and a bandwidth on the order of 500 MHz or more.

25. An apparatus for providing a signal, comprising:

means for providing an oscillating signal;

means for comparing the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal; and

means for generating the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, further comprising:

means for storing a set of adjustable threshold values, each of which is associated with a different phase offset for the output signal;

wherein the means for generating selects one of the adjustable threshold values to skew the phase of the output signal.

27. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein:

the means for comparing compares the oscillating signal with at least one other adjustable threshold to provide at least one other output signal; and

the means for generating generates the at least one other adjustable threshold to skew a phase of each of the at least one other output signal.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, further comprising:

means for storing a set of adjustable threshold values, each of which is associated with a different phase offset;

wherein the means for generating selects at least one of the set of adjustable threshold values to skew the phases of the output signals.

29. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein:

the means for comparing comprises an inverter having an adjustable decision threshold that determines a level of the oscillating signal that causes the inverter to switch polarity of the output signal; and

adjustment of the adjustable threshold alters the decision threshold.

30. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein:

the means for comparing comprises a transistor circuit having an adjustable bias; and

adjustment of the adjustable threshold adjusts the bias.

31. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the means for providing comprises a crystal oscillator coupled in parallel with an inverter.

32. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein:

the means for generating is implemented in a tracking loop; and

the tracking loop is configured to skew the phase of the output signal to track a phase of another signal.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the another signal comprises a clock signal that is recovered from a received signal.

34. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the means for providing has a quality factor on the order of 10 or more.

35. The apparatus of claim 25, further comprising means for recovering data from ultra-wideband pulses based on the output signal.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the ultra-wideband pulses are associated with a fractional bandwidth on the order of 20% or more, a bandwidth on the order of 500 MHz or more, or a fractional bandwidth on the order of 20% or more and a bandwidth on the order of 500 MHz or more.

37. A computer-program product for providing a signal, comprising:

computer-readable medium comprising codes executable by at least one computer to;

provide an oscillating signal;

compare the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal; and

generate the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal.

38. A headset, comprising:

an oscillator circuit configured to provide an oscillating signal;

a comparator configured to compare the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal;

a threshold circuit configured to generate the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal; and

a transducer adapted to provide an audio output based on data that is provided through the use of the output signal.

39. A watch, comprising:

an oscillator circuit configured to provide an oscillating signal;

a comparator configured to compare the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal;

a threshold circuit configured to generate the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal; and

a user interface adapted to provide an indication based on data that is provided through the use of the output signal.

40. A sensing device for wireless communication, comprising:

an oscillator circuit configured to provide an oscillating signal;

a comparator configured to compare the oscillating signal with an adjustable threshold to provide an output signal;

a threshold circuit configured to generate the adjustable threshold to skew a phase of the output signal; and

a sensor adapted to provide data to be transmitted through the use of the output signal.
