Abstract

A method of providing and managing bets is provided. One or more particular race participants in a race event are determined. For each intermediate point within a race event, one or more particular possible positions of race participants at that intermediate point are determined. A bet comprising a plurality of bet components is generated, one or more of the bet components being defined by the particular race participants and the particular possible positions of race participants determined for at least one of the intermediate points. Intermediate race results are received for each intermediate point identifying the actual positions of the particular race participants at that intermediate point. A result of at least one bet component is determined based at least in part on the particular race participants, the particular possible positions of race participants determined for at least one intermediate point, and the received intermediate race results for at least one intermediate point.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event having a plurality of race participants;

for at least one of a plurality of intermediate points within the race event, determining one or more possible positions of race participants at that intermediate point;

generating a bet comprising a plurality of bet components, at least one of the bet components defined at least in part by the one or more race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants;

for the at least one of the plurality of intermediate points within the race event, receiving intermediate race results identifying the actual positions of at least one of the one or more race participants at that intermediate point; and

for the at least one bet component, determining a result for that bet component based at least in part on the one or more race participants, the one or more possible positions of race participants determined, and the received intermediate race results for the at least one of the intermediate points.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

determining a result for the bet component comprises determining whether that bet component is a winning bet component; and

the method further comprises if the bet component is determined to be a winning bet component, determining a pari-mutuel payout for the winning bet component.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the bet has an associated wager amount; and

the method further comprises allocating the wager amount among one or more of the plurality of bet components.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein allocating the wager amount among one or more of the plurality of bet components comprises allocating an equal portion of the wager amount to each of the plurality of bet components.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein allocating the wager amount among one or more of the plurality of bet components comprises allocating the wager amount among the one or more bet components in amounts based at least in part on input received from a customer.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the race event occurs at a first track location;

the bet has an associated wager amount; and

the wager amount is assigned to a pari-mutuel pool maintained by a betting location geographically distinct from the first track location.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein:

each of the one or more bet components corresponds with one of the plurality of intermediate points; and

determining a result for the at least one bet component comprises determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results for the intermediate point corresponding with that bet component, whether the one or more determined race participants were positioned in the one or more possible positions determined for that intermediate point.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein:

receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event comprises receiving a determination of three race participants in the race event;

determining one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points comprises determining three possible positions of race participants;

at least one of the bet components is defined at least in part by the three determined race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for a corresponding intermediate point;

receiving intermediate race results comprises receiving intermediate race results identifying the actual positions of the three determined race participants at the corresponding intermediate point; and

determining a result comprises determining a result of the at least one bet component based at least in part on the three determined race participants, the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for the corresponding intermediate point, and the received intermediate race results for the corresponding intermediate points.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more race participants are determined based on customer selections.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more race participants are determined randomly.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more race participants are determined automatically based on the results of one or more previous race events.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein:

a plurality of other bets are received from one or more customers, each of the other bets having an associated wager amount and one or more associated race participants of the plurality of race participants such that each of the plurality of race participants has an associated total wager amount; and

the one or more race participants for the bet are determined based at least in part on at least one of;

the number of the other bets associated with each of the plurality of race participants; and

the total wager amount associated with each of the plurality of race participants.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the one or more race participants for the bet are determined such that a potential payout for the bet is maximized.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is randomly determined.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is selected by a customer.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is automatically determined by a bet providing entity.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the plurality of bet components includes a multi-point bet component, the multi-point bet component defined at least in part by the one or more determined race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for more than one of the intermediate points; and

the method further comprises determining a result for the multi-point bet component based at least in part on the one or more determined race participants, the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for the more than one intermediate points, and the received intermediate race results for each of the more than one intermediate points.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein determining a result for the multi-point bet component comprises determining whether, for each of the more than one intermediate points, at least one of the one or more determined race participants was positioned in any of the one or more possible positions determined for that intermediate point based at least in part on the received intermediate race results for that intermediate point.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein determining a result for the multi-point bet component comprises determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results for the one or more intermediate points, whether the one or more determined race participants were positioned in all of the one or more possible positions determined for each of the more than one intermediate points.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

determining from a plurality of possible positions one or more possible positions of race participants at a finishing point of the race event;

receiving finishing point race results identifying the actual positions of at least one of the one or more determined race participants at the finishing point of the race event; and

wherein the multi-point bet component is defined at least in part by the one or more determined race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for each of the plurality of intermediate points and the finishing point of the race event.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein:

determining one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one intermediate point comprises;

determining one or more first possible positions of race participants for a first one of the intermediate points; and

determining one or more second possible positions of race participants for a second one of the intermediate points;

generating a bet comprising a plurality of bet components comprises;

generating a first bet component defined at least in part by the one or more determined race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for the first intermediate point; and

generating a second bet component defined at least in part by the one or more determined race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for the second intermediate point; and

receiving intermediate race results for at least one intermediate points comprises;

receiving first intermediate race results regarding the first one of the intermediate points, the first intermediate race results identifying the actual positions of at least one of the determined race participants at the first intermediate point; and

receiving second intermediate race results regarding the first one of the intermediate points, the second intermediate race results identifying the actual positions of at least one of the determined race participants at the second intermediate point.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein determining a result for at least one bet component comprises:

determining a result for the first bet component based at least in part on the one or more determined race participants, the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for the first intermediate point, and the received intermediate race results for the first intermediate point; and

determining a result for the second bet component based at least in part on the one or more determined race participants, the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for the second intermediate point, and the received intermediate race results for the second intermediate point.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein:

determining a result for the first bet component comprises determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results for the first intermediate point, whether the one or more determined race participants were positioned in the one or more possible positions determined for the first intermediate point; and

determining a result for the second bet component comprises determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results for the second intermediate point, whether the one or more determined race participants were positioned in the one or more possible positions determined for the second intermediate point.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein generating a bet comprises generating a bet matrix, comprising:

providing a matrix having a plurality of columns extending in a first direction and a plurality of rows extending in a second direction, each column of the bet matrix corresponding with one of the intermediate points in the race event; and

for at least one of the plurality of columns in the bet matrix, populating that column with numbers identifying the one or more possible positions determined for the intermediate point corresponding with that column such that one number is located in each row intersecting that column;

wherein at least one of the bet components is defined at least in part by at least one of the one or more determined race participants and the arrangement of the numbers within one or more columns of the bet matrix.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein determining the result for each of the at least one bet components comprises determining that a bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in a direction in the bet matrix.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the number of matched entries equals the number of the one or more determined race participants.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the number of matched entries is selected by a customer.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the number of matched entries is randomly determined.

29. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one bet component comprises a jackpot bet component.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein:

a plurality of jackpot bet components associated with a plurality of customers, including the jackpot bet component, are associated with the race event, and each jackpot bet component is associated with a jackpot wager amount; and

the method further comprises;

determining whether at least one of the plurality of jackpot bet components is a winning bet; and

if none of the plurality of jackpot bet components are determined to be winning bets, carrying the jackpot wager amounts associated with the plurality of jackpot bet components forward to one or more subsequent race events until at least one winning jackpot bet component is determined.

31. A method, comprising:

receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event having a plurality of race participants;

generating a bet matrix, comprising;

providing a matrix having a plurality of columns extending in a first direction and a plurality of rows extending in a second direction, at least one column of the bet matrix corresponding with one of a plurality of intermediate points in a race event;

for at least one intermediate point within the race event, determining one or more possible positions of race participants at that intermediate point; and

for at least one of the columns in the bet matrix, populating that column with numbers identifying the one or more possible positions determined for the intermediate point corresponding with that column; and

providing a bet associated with the bet matrix, the bet including one or more bet components, at least one of the bet components defined at least in part by at least one of the one or more race participants and the arrangement of the numbers within one or more columns of the bet matrix.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

determining whether a bet component is a winning bet component; and

if the bet component is determined a winning bet component, determining a pari-mutuel payout for the bet component.

33. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

for at least one intermediate point within the race event, receiving intermediate race results identifying the race participants that were actually positioned at that intermediate point in at least one of the one or more possible positions determined for that intermediate point; and

determining a result for the at least one bet components based at least in part on at least one of the one or more determined race participants, the arrangement of the numbers within one or more columns of the bet matrix, and the received intermediate race results for at least one of the intermediate points.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein:

the number at the intersection of a column and a row in the bet matrix comprises a matrix entry;

the method further comprises;

for at least one intermediate point within the race event, receiving intermediate race results identifying the race participants that were actually positioned at that intermediate point in at least one of the one or more possible positions determined for that intermediate point;

for at least one matrix entry at the intersection of a column and a row in the bet matrix, determining whether that matrix entry is a matched entry by determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results, whether one of the race participants was actually positioned in the possible position identified by the number in that matrix entry; and

the result for at least one bet component is determined based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the matched entries associated with the bet matrix.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein determining the result for at least one bet component based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the matched entries comprises determining that a bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in a direction in the bet matrix.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the number of matched entries equals the number of the one or more determined race participants.

37. The method of claim 35, wherein the number of matched entries is selected by a customer.

38. The method of claim 35, wherein the number of matched entries is randomly determined.

39. The method of claim 35, further comprising:

determining a result for each of the bet components; and

determining a payout for a bet component based at least in part on the number of matched entries.

40. The method of claim 34, wherein determining the result for at least one bet component based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the matched entries comprises determining that a bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in one of the columns of the bet matrix.

41. The method of claim 34, wherein determining the result for at least one bet component based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the matched entries comprises determining that a bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in one of the rows of the bet matrix.

42. The method of claim 34, wherein determining the result for at least one bet component based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the matched entries comprises determining that a bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in a diagonal direction extending across the number of columns and the number of rows of the bet matrix.

43. The method of claim 34, wherein determining the result for at least one bet component based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the determined matched entries comprises determining that a bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes at least one of:

a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in one of the columns of the bet matrix;

a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in one of the rows of the bet matrix; and

a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in a diagonal direction extending across the number of columns and the number of rows of the bet matrix.

44. The method of claim 31, wherein generating the bet matrix further comprises:

providing a matrix further comprising a column corresponding with a finishing point of the race event;

for the finishing point of the race event, determining one or more possible positions of race participants at the finishing point; and

populating the column corresponding with the finishing point with numbers identifying the one or more possible positions determined for the finishing point of the race event.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein:

determining one or more possible positions for the finishing point of the race event comprises determining one or more positions in sequential numerical order; and

populating the column corresponding with the finishing point comprises populating the column with the one or more numbers in sequential numerical order.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein:

the number at the intersection of a column and a row in the bet matrix comprises a matrix entry;

the method further comprises;

for at least one intermediate point within the race event, receiving intermediate race results identifying the race participants that were actually positioned at that intermediate point in at least one of the one or more possible positions determined for that intermediate point;

for the finishing point of the race event, receiving finishing race results identifying the race participants that were actually positioned at the finishing point in at least one of the one or more possible positions determined for the finishing point;

for at least one matrix entry at the intersection of a column and a row in the bet matrix, determining whether that matrix entry is a matched entry by determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results and finishing race results, whether one of the race participants was actually positioned in the possible position identified by the number in that matrix entry at the intermediate point or finishing point corresponding with the column; and

the result for at least one bet component is determined based at least in part on the relative locations of at least a portion of the matched entries associated with the bet matrix.

47. The method of claim 31, wherein:

the bet associated with the bet matrix has an associated wager amount; and

the method further comprises allocating the wager amount among one or more of the plurality of bet components.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein allocating the wager amount among one or more of the plurality of bet components comprises allocating an equal portion of the wager amount to each of the plurality of bet components.

49. The method of claim 47, wherein allocating the wager amount among one or more of the plurality of bet components comprises allocating the wager amount among the one or more bet components in amounts based at least in part on input received from a customer.

50. The method of claim 31, wherein:

the race event occurs at a first track location;

the bet has an associated wager amount; and

the wager amount is assigned to a pari-mutuel pool maintained by a betting location geographically distinct from the first track location.

51. The method of claim 31, wherein the one or more race participants are determined based on customer selection.

52. The method of claim 31, wherein the one or more race participants are determined randomly.

53. The method of claim 31, wherein:

a plurality of other bets are received from one or more customers, each of the other bets having an associated wager amount and one or more associated race participants of the plurality of race participants such that each of the plurality of race participants has an associated total wager amount; and

the one or more race participants for the bet are determined based at least in part on at least one of;

the number of the other bets associated with each of the plurality of race participants; and

the total wager amount associated with each of the plurality of race participants

54. The method of claim 53, wherein the one or more race participants for the bet are determined such that a potential payout for the bet is maximized.

55. The method of claim 31, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is randomly determined.

56. The method of claim 31, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is selected by a customer.

57. The method of claim 31, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is automatically determined by a bet providing entity.

58. The method of claim 34, wherein generating a bet matrix comprises providing a plurality of matrices, each corresponding with one of a plurality of race events, each of the plurality of matrices including a plurality of columns extending in a first direction and a plurality of rows extending in a second direction, at least one column of each matrix corresponding with one of a plurality of intermediate points in the race event corresponding with that matrix;

and

wherein a bet component is defined at least in part by at least one of the one or more race participants and the arrangement of the numbers within more than one of the plurality of matrices.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein:

the number at the intersection of a column and a row in each of the plurality of matrices comprises a matrix entry;

the method further comprises;

determining whether at least one matrix entry in each of the plurality of matrices is a matched entry; and

determining a result for the bet component based at least in part on the relative locations of determined matched entries in more than one of the plurality of matrices.

60. The method of claim 59, wherein determining a result for the bet component comprises determining that the bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in a direction spanning more than one of the plurality of matrices.

61. A method, comprising:

receiving a bet identifying one or more race participants in a race event, the bet comprising a bet regarding the positions of the one or more race participants at one or more intermediate points within the race event;

receiving intermediate race results identifying the positions of at least one of the race participants at the one or more intermediate points; and

determining a result of the bet based at least in part on the received intermediate race results.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein:

determining a result of the bet comprises determining whether the bet is a winning bet; and

the method further comprises if the bet is determined a winning bet, determining a pari-mutuel payout for the bet.

63. The method of claim 61, wherein:

receiving a bet identifying one or more race participants in a race event comprises;

receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event having a plurality of race participants;

for at least one of a plurality of intermediate points within the race event, determining from a plurality of possible positions one or more possible positions of race participants at that intermediate point; and

generating a bet comprising a plurality of bet components, each of one or more of the plurality of bet components defined at least in part by the one or more race participants and the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for at least one of the intermediate points;

receiving intermediate race results comprises receiving, for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points, intermediate race results identifying the actual positions of at least one of the determined race participants at that intermediate point; and

determining a result of the bet comprises determining, for at least one bet component, a result for that bet component based at least in part on the one or more determined race participants, the one or more possible positions of race participants determined for at least one of the intermediate points, and the received intermediate race results for at least one of the intermediate points.

64. The method of claim 61, wherein:

the bet has an associated wager amount; and

the method further comprises allocating the wager amount among a plurality of bet components associated with the bet.

65. The method of claim 64, wherein allocating the wager amount among a plurality of bet components comprises allocating an equal portion of the wager amount to each of the plurality of bet components.

66. The method of claim 64, wherein allocating the wager amount among the plurality of bet components comprises allocating the wager amount among the plurality of bet components in amounts based at least in part on input received from a customer.

67. The method of claim 61, wherein:

the race event occurs at a first track location;

the bet has an associated wager amount; and

the wager amount is assigned to a pari-mutuel pool maintained by a betting location geographically distinct from the first track location.

68. The method of claim 61, wherein:

each of one or more bet components associated with the bet corresponds with one of the plurality of intermediate points; and

determining a result for a bet component comprises determining whether the one or more identified race participants were positioned in one or more possible positions determined for a corresponding intermediate point.

69. The method of claim 63, wherein the one or more identified race participants are determined based upon customer selection.

70. The method of claim 63, wherein the one or more identified race participants are randomly determined.

71. The method of claim 63, wherein:

a plurality of other bets are received from one or more customers, each of the other bets having an associated wager amount and one or more associated race participants of the plurality of race participants such that each of the plurality of race participants has an associated total wager amount; and

the one or more race participants for the bet are determined based at least in part on at least one of;

the number of the other bets associated with each of the plurality of race participants; and

the total wager amount associated with each of the plurality of race participants

72. The method of claim 71, wherein the one or more race participants for the bet are determined such that a potential payout for the bet is maximized.

73. The method of claim 63, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is randomly determined.

74. The method of claim 63, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is selected by a customer.

75. The method of claim 63, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is automatically determined by a bet providing entity.

76. The method of claim 61, wherein generating a bet comprises generating a bet matrix, comprising:

providing a matrix having a plurality of columns extending in a first direction and a plurality of rows extending in a second direction, at least one of the columns of the bet matrix corresponding with one of the intermediate points; and

for each of at least one of the columns of the bet matrix, populating that column with numbers identifying one or more possible positions determined for the intermediate point corresponding with that column;

wherein at least one of a plurality of bet components associated with the bet is defined at least in part by at least one of the one or more identified race participants and the arrangement of the numbers within one or more columns of the bet matrix.

77. The method of claim 61, wherein:

the bet comprises a jackpot bet component;

a plurality of jackpot bet components associated with a plurality of customers, including the jackpot bet component, are associated with the race event, and each jackpot bet component is associated with a jackpot wager amount; and

the method further comprises;

determining whether at least one of the plurality of jackpot bet components is a winning bet; and

if none of the plurality of jackpot bet components are determined to be winning bets carrying the jackpot wager amounts associated with the plurality of jackpot bet components forward to one or more subsequent race events until at least one winning jackpot bet component is determined.

78. A method, comprising:

receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event having a plurality of race participants;

determining one or more possible positions of race participants at an intermediate point within the race event;

generating a bet defined at least in part by the one or more determined race participants and the one or more determined possible positions of race participants at the intermediate point;

receiving intermediate race results identifying the actual positions of at least one of the one or more race participants at the intermediate point; and

determining a result of the bet based at least in part on the one or more determined possible positions of race participants and the received intermediate race results.

79. The method of claim 78, wherein:

determining a result of the bet comprises determining whether the bet is a winning bet; and

the method further comprises if the bet is determined a winning bet, determining a pari-mutuel payout for the bet.

80. The method of claim 78, wherein determining a result of the bet comprises determining, based at least in part on the received intermediate race results, whether the one or more determined race participants were positioned in the one or more determined possible positions at the intermediate point.

81. The method of claim 78, wherein receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event comprises receiving from a customer a selection of one or more race participants in the race event.

82. The method of claim 78, wherein receiving a determination of one or more race participants in a race event having a plurality of race participants comprises randomly determining one or more of the plurality of race participants.

83. The method of claim 78, wherein:

a plurality of other bets are received from one or more customers, each of the other bets having an associated wager amount and one or more associated race participants of the plurality of race participants such that each of the plurality of race participants has an associated total wager amount; and

the one or more race participants for the bet are determined based at least in part on at least one of;

the number of the other bets associated with each of the plurality of race participants; and

the total wager amount associated with each of the plurality of race participants

84. The method of claim 83, wherein the one or more race participants for the bet are determined such that a potential payout for the bet is maximized.

85. The method of claim 78, wherein:

the race event occurs at a first track location;

the bet has an associated wager amount; and

the wager amount is assigned to a pari-mutuel pool maintained by a betting location geographically distinct from the first track location.

86. The method of claim 78, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants at the intermediate point is randomly determined.

87. The method of claim 78, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is selected by a customer.

88. The method of claim 78, wherein at least one of the one or more possible positions of race participants for at least one of the plurality of intermediate points is automatically determined by a bet providing entity.

89. The method of claim 78, wherein generating a bet comprises generating a bet matrix, comprising:

providing a matrix having a plurality of columns extending in a first direction and a plurality of rows extending in a second direction, at least one of the columns corresponding with one of a plurality of intermediate points in the race event including the intermediate point; and

populating the column corresponding with the intermediate point with numbers identifying the one or more possible positions determined for the intermediate point;

wherein the bet comprises a bet component defined at least in part by at least one of the one or more determined race participants and the arrangement of the numbers within one or more columns of the bet matrix.

90. The method of claim 89, wherein determining the result for the bet component comprises determining that the bet component is a winning bet component if the bet matrix includes a number of matched entries aligned consecutively in a direction in the bet matrix.

91. The method of claim 78, wherein:

the bet comprises a jackpot bet component;

a plurality of jackpot bet components associated with a plurality of customers, including the jackpot bet component, are associated with the race event, and each jackpot bet component is associated with a jackpot wager amount; and

the method further comprises;

determining whether at least one of the plurality of jackpot bet components is a winning bet; and

if none of the plurality of jackpot bet components are determined to be winning bets carrying the jackpot wager amounts associated with the plurality of jackpot bet components forward to one or more subsequent race events until at least one winning jackpot bet component is determined.
