1. A device for ultra wideband communications over a guided medium, comprising:

  • a line interface configured for electrical communication to the guided medium and adapted for interfacing with the guided medium;

    an ultra wideband impulse transmitter electrically connected to the line interface for transmitting amplitude modulated ultra wideband impulses over the guided medium;

    an ultra wideband receiver electrically connected to the line interface for receiving amplitude modulated ultra wideband impulses over the guided medium;

    wherein the device is adapted for preparing data for transmission using the ultra wideband impulse transmitter by;

    (a) determining bit loading per frequency bin based on channel estimation data to create data symbols;

    (b) performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on an array of the data symbols;

    (c) mapping FFT data output sub-channel to a frequency bin to provide frequency mapped data;

    (d) performing an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) on the frequency mapped data to provide IFFT frequency mapped data suitable for transmission using one-dimensional amplitude modulated ultra wideband impulses representing the IFFT frequency mapped data.
