1. A system configured to measure at least one analyte in a host, the system comprising:

  • a vascular access device comprising a first portion configured for insertion into a host and a second portion configured to remain outside the host after insertion of the first portion;

    at least one analyte sensor located within the second portion of the vascular access device, such that the at least one analyte sensor is exposed to a biological sample when the biological sample is drawn back by a distance of about 40 mm or less into the vascular access device, when the vascular access device is in fluid communication with a circulatory system of the host; and

    a flow control device configured to regulate exposure of the at least one analyte sensor to a biological sample and to a reference solution according to a flow profile.
