Abstract

Interference that occurs during wireless communication may be managed by reducing the power level of an overhead channel during a call. A method, apparatus and medium of communication determine an optimized reduced power level for an overhead channel of an unplanned access point to an associated access terminal during a call therebetween. The overhead channel is transmitted according to the optimized reduced power level resulting in a decrease in interference as seen by neighboring unplanned access points.

Claims

1. A method of communication, comprising:

determining an optimized reduced power level for an overhead channel of an unplanned access point to an associated access terminal during a call therebetween; and

transmitting the overhead channel from the unplanned access point at the optimized reduced power level to the associated access terminal.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving forward link power control signals designating adjustments to a power level of a traffic channel associated with the overhead channel.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising adjusting the power level of the traffic channel until an adequate error rate is determined.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising determining a traffic-to-overhead channel ratio of the power level of the traffic channel over the power level of the overhead channel.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the optimized reduced power level for the overhead channel is determined as

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the overhead channel is one of a pilot channel, a synchronization channel, and a broadcast/paging channel.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

repeating the determining an optimized reduced power level for each overhead channel of each of the plurality of calls from the unplanned access point with a respective plurality of associated access terminals; and

determining an overall optimized reduced power level from the plurality of calls.

8. An apparatus for communication, comprising:

an interference controller configured to determine an optimized reduced power level for an overhead channel of an unplanned access point to an associated access terminal during a call therebetween; and

a communication controller configured to transmit the overhead channel from the unplanned access point at the optimized reduced power level to the associated access terminal.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the communication controller is further configured to receive forward link power control signals designating adjustments to a power level of a traffic channel associated with the overhead channel.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the communication controller is further configured to adjust the power level of the traffic channel until an adequate error rate is determined.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the interference controller is further configured to determine a traffic-to-overhead channel ratio of the power level of the traffic channel over the power level of the overhead channel.

12. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the optimized reduced power level for the overhead channel is determined as

13. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the overhead channel is one of a pilot channel, a synchronization channel, and a broadcast/paging channel.

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the interference controller is further configured to repeat determining an optimized reduced power level for each overhead channel of each of the plurality of calls from the unplanned access point with a respective plurality of associated access terminals, and to determine an overall optimized reduced power level from the plurality of calls.

15. An apparatus for communication, comprising:

means for determining an optimized reduced power level for an overhead channel of an unplanned access point to an associated access terminal during a call therebetween; and

means for transmitting the overhead channel from the unplanned access point at the optimized reduced power level to the associated access terminal.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising means for receiving forward link power control signals designating adjustments to a power level of a traffic channel associated with the overhead channel.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising means for adjusting the power level of the traffic channel until an adequate error rate is determined.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising means for determining a traffic-to-overhead channel ratio of the power level of the traffic channel over the power level of the overhead channel.

19. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the optimized reduced power level for the overhead channel is determined as

20. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the overhead channel is one of a pilot channel, a synchronization channel, and a broadcast/paging channel.

21. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising:

means for repeating the determining an optimized reduced power level for each overhead channel of each of the plurality of calls from the unplanned access point with a respective plurality of associated access terminals; and

means for determining an overall optimized reduced power level from the plurality of calls.

22. A computer-program product, comprising:

computer-readable medium comprising codes for causing a computer to;

determine an optimized reduced power level for an overhead channel of an unplanned access point to an associated access terminal during a call therebetween; and

transmit the overhead channel from the unplanned access point at the optimized reduced power level to the associated access terminal.

23. The computer-program product of claim 22, further comprising codes for causing the computer to receive forward link power control signals designating adjustments to a power level of a traffic channel associated with the overhead channel.

24. The computer-program product of claim 23, further comprising codes for causing the computer to adjust the power level of the traffic channel until an adequate error rate is determined.

25. The computer-program product of claim 24, further comprising codes for causing the computer to determine a traffic-to-overhead channel ratio of the power level of the traffic channel over the power level of the overhead channel.

26. The computer-program product of claim 22, wherein the optimized reduced power level for the overhead channel is determined as
