Abstract

Methods and systems of patient treatment are disclosed. The methods and systems include use of medical device informatics to modify and validate therapies and drugs used in those therapies. In certain embodiments, a medical device, such as a medical infusion pump, interfaces with a server to administer the patient treatments. In one aspect, a method of tracking changed parameters in a medical infusion pump is disclosed. The method includes establishing a communication session between a medical infusion pump and a medical device server, and communicating an original parameter value, an updated parameter value, and a final parameter value from the medical infusion pump to the medical device server. The method further includes storing the original parameter value, the updated parameter value, and the final parameter value on the medical device server. Metadata associated with one or more of the parameter values identifies that parameter value to the medical device server and the medical infusion pump.

Claims

1. A method of tracking changed parameters in a medical infusion pump, the method comprising:

establishing a communication session between a medical infusion pump and a medical device server;

communicating an original parameter value, an updated parameter value, and a final parameter value from the medical infusion pump to the medical device server;

storing the original parameter value, the updated parameter value, and the final parameter value on the medical device server;

wherein metadata associated with one or more of the parameter values identifies that parameter value to the medical device server and the medical infusion pump.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the final parameter value to a soft limit stored on the server.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the soft limit, triggering an alarm in the medical device server.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising communicating the alarm to the medical infusion pump.

5. The method of claim 3, further comprising communicating the alarm to a medical caregiver.

6. The method of claim 3, further comprising communicating the alarm to a device capable of emitting a visual or audible alarm.

7. The method of claim 2, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the soft limit, storing the parameter values in event log data on the medical device server.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the final parameter value to a hard limit stored on the server.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the hard limit, triggering an alarm in the medical device server.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising communicating the alarm to the medical infusion pump.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising communicating the alarm to a medical caregiver.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the hard limit, storing the parameter values in event log data on the medical device server.

13. A system for tracking changed parameters in a medical infusion pump, the system comprising:

a medical infusion pump having one or more programmable parameters;

a medical device server communicatively connected to the medical infusion pump, the medical device server comprising;

a memory configured to store parameter values;

a programmable circuit operatively connected to the memory, the programmable circuit configured to execute program instructions to;

establish a communication session between the medical infusion pump and the medical device server;

receive an original parameter value, an updated parameter value, and a final parameter value from the medical infusion pump; and

store the original parameter value, the updated parameter value, and the final parameter value in the memory;

wherein metadata associated with one or more of the parameter values identifies that parameter value to the medical device server and the medical infusion pump.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising comparing the final parameter value to a soft limit stored on the server.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the soft limit, triggering an alarm in the medical device server.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising communicating the alarm to the medical infusion pump.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising communicating the alarm to a medical caregiver.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising communicating the alarm to a device capable of emitting a visual or audible alarm.

19. The method of claim 14, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the soft limit, storing the parameter values in event log data on the medical device server.

20. The method of claim 13, further comprising comparing the final parameter value to a hard limit stored on the server.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the hard limit, triggering an alarm in the medical device server.

22. The method of claim 20, further comprising communicating the alarm to the medical infusion pump.

23. The method of claim 20, further comprising communicating the alarm to a medical caregiver.

24. The method of claim 19, further comprising, upon determining that the final parameter value is outside the hard limit, storing the parameter values in event log data on the medical device server.

25. A system for tracking changed parameters in a medical infusion pump, the system comprising:

a plurality of medical infusion pumps, each of the pumps having one or more programmable parameters;

a medical device server communicatively connected to the plurality of medical infusion pumps, the medical device server comprising;

a memory configured to store parameter values;

a programmable circuit operatively connected to the memory, the programmable circuit configured to execute program instructions to;

establish a communication session between one of the medical infusion pumps and the medical device server;

receive an original parameter value, an updated parameter value, and a final parameter value from the medical infusion pump; and

store the original parameter value, the updated parameter value, and the final parameter value in the memory;

wherein metadata associated with one or more of the parameter values identifies that parameter value to the medical device server and the medical infusion pump.
