Abstract

A system and method for assigning notification type values. For dynamic notification types, a two-level mapping between the application and the notification type is performed. As a middle level or intermediary, a Multimedia Internet Message Extension (MIME) type for the notification messages is provided. The MIME type corresponds to the MIME type of the application-specific message part of the notification message. A pointer to a recommended notification application that can consume the messages of that specific type is also provided.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

mapping a notification application that does not qualify for static mapping to a notification type value using a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for a notification message that is intended for consumption by the notification application; and

assigning the mapped notification type value to the corresponding notification application, wherein the assigned mapped notification type value is included in the notification message when transmitted to a terminal and intended for consumption by a notification framework.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the mapping to the notification type value is unique to an entire Internet Protocol platform.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mapping to the notification type value is unique to a delivery channel within which the notification message is delivered.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the notification message corresponds to a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for an application-specific part of the notification message.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein if the application-specific part of the notification message is delivered in its own transport object, then the mapping of the notification application to the notification type value is based on a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type indicated in a Content-Type field of a corresponding file type of a file delivery table.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within an extension element to the file delivery table.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein if the application-specific message part of the notification message is delivered within a notification container, then the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type is indicated in one of an index part of the notification container and in a multipart/Multimedia Internet Message Extension that carries the application-specific message part of the notification message.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within a file delivery table.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated via a generic message part of the notification message.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within an index list of the notification message.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within a notification initialization container.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein a link is transmitted to the terminal via which a user can download an application capable of consuming notification messages corresponding to the assigned notification type value.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the link is included in a generic message part of the notification message.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the link is included in a notification initialization container.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the link is included in an electronic service guide.

16. A computer program product, embodied in a computer-readable storage medium, comprising computer code configured to perform the processes of claim 1.

17. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory communicatively connected to the processor and including;

computer code configured to map a notification application that does not qualify for static mapping to a notification type value using a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for a notification message that is intended for consumption by the notification application; and

computer code configured to assign the mapped notification type value to the corresponding notification application, wherein the assigned mapped notification type value is included in the notification message when transmitted to a terminal and intended for consumption by a notification framework.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the mapping to the notification type value is unique to an entire Internet Protocol platform.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the mapping to the notification type value is unique to a delivery channel within which the notification message is delivered.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the notification message corresponds to a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for an application-specific part of the notification message.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein if the application-specific part of the notification message is delivered in its own transport object, then the mapping of the notification application to the notification type value is based on a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type indicated in a Content-Type field of a corresponding file type of a file delivery table.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within an extension element to the file delivery table.

23. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein if the application-specific message part of the notification message is delivered within a notification container, then the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type is indicated in one of an index part of the notification container and in a multipart/Multimedia Internet Message Extension that carries the application-specific message part of the notification message.

24. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within a file delivery table.

25. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated via a generic message part of the notification message.

26. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within an index list of the notification message.

27. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the assigned notification type value is indicated within a notification initialization container.

28. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein a link is transmitted to the terminal via which a user can download an application capable of consuming notification messages corresponding to the assigned notification type value.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the link is included in a generic message part of the notification message.

30. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the link is included in a notification initialization container.

31. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the link is included in an electronic service guide.

32. An apparatus, comprising:

means for mapping a notification application that does not qualify for static mapping to a notification type value using a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for a notification message that is intended for consumption by the notification application; and

means for assigning the mapped notification type value to the corresponding notification application, wherein the assigned mapped notification type value is included in the notification message when transmitted to a terminal and intended for consumption by a notification framework.

33. A method, comprising:

receiving a notification message, wherein a notification type for the notification message has not previously been registered;

retrieving a mapping of the notification type to a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type; and

registering a temporal mapping between a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for an application-specific part of the notification message and the Notification type.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising, if the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message is not already registered:

retrieving a link to a recommended notification application;

determining whether a user wishes to install the recommended notification application; and

if the user wishes to install the recommended notification application;

installing the recommended notification application; and

registering a permanent mapping between the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message and the recommended notification application.

35. The method of claim 33, further comprising, if the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message is already registered:

if a recommended notification application for the notification message is already running, forwarding the notification message to the recommended notification application; and

if the recommended notification application is not already running;

retrieving initialization information for the recommended notification application;

launching and configuring the recommended notification application; and

forwarding the notification message to the recommended notification application.

36. A computer program product, embodied in a computer-readable medium, comprising computer code configured to perform the processes of claim 33.

37. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory unit communicatively connected to the processor and including;

computer code configured to process a received notification message, wherein a notification type for the notification message has not previously been registered;

computer code configured to retrieve a mapping of the notification type to a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type; and

computer code configured to register a temporal mapping between a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for an application-specific part of the notification message and the Notification type.

38. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the memory unit further comprises computer code configured to, if the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message is not already registered:

retrieve a link to a recommended notification application;

determine whether a user wishes to install the recommended notification application; and

if the user wishes to install the recommended notification application;

install the recommended notification application; and

register a permanent mapping between the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message and the recommended notification application.

39. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the memory unit further comprises computer code configured to, if the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message is already registered:

if a recommended notification application for the notification message is already running, forward the notification message to the recommended notification application; and

if the recommended notification application is not already running;

retrieve initialization information for the recommended notification application;

launch and configure the recommended notification application; and

forward the notification message to the recommended notification application.

40. An apparatus, comprising:

means for receiving a notification message, wherein a notification type for the notification message has not previously been registered;

means for retrieving a mapping of the notification type to a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type; and

means for registering a temporal mapping between a Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for an application-specific part of the notification message and the Notification type.

41. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising means for, if the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message is not already registered:

retrieving a link to a recommended notification application;

determining whether a user wishes to install the recommended notification application; and

if the user wishes to install the recommended notification application;

installing the recommended notification application; and

registering a permanent mapping between the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message and the recommended notification application.

42. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising means for, if the Multimedia Internet Message Extension type for the application-specific part of the notification message is already registered:

if a recommended notification application for the notification message is already running, forwarding the notification message to the recommended notification application; and

if the recommended notification application is not already running;

retrieving initialization information for the recommended notification application;

launching and configuring the recommended notification application; and

forwarding the notification message to the recommended notification application.
