Abstract

A method and apparatus for identifying access points using a positioning device and a map having a plurality of segments; determining that the positioning device is near a first location; detecting that the positioning device is off-route at a second location; and storing the second location as a first access point associated with the first location on the map.

Claims

1. A method for identifying access points using a positioning device and a map having a plurality of segments;

determining that the positioning device is near a first location;

detecting that the positioning device is off-route at a second location;

storing the second location as a first access point associated with the first location on the map.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the positioning device transitions from within the first location to the second location.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the positioning device transitions from outside of the first location to the second location.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first location is one of a building, a building complex or a parking lot.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising performing point-to-point routing between a third location and the second location.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first location has a plurality of access points comprising the first access point, the method further comprising:

generating a plurality of routes, each route being between a third location and one of the plurality of access points; and

selecting one of the plurality of routes based on a criteria.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the criteria is one of the shortest distance and the shortest expected travel time.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first location has a first plurality of access points comprising the first access point and a second location has a second plurality of access points, the method further comprising:

generating a plurality of routes between each of the first plurality of access points and each of the second plurality of access points;

selecting one of the plurality of routes based on a criteria.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the criteria is one of the shortest distance and the shortest expected travel time.

10. A positioning device using a map having a plurality of segments, the positioning device comprising:

a program for determining that the positioning device is near a first location;

a program for detecting that the positioning device is off-route at a second location; and

a program for storing the second location as a first access point to the first location on the map.

11. The positioning device of claim 10 further comprising a program for performing point-to-point routing between a third location and the second location.

12. The positioning device of claim 10 wherein the first location has a plurality of access points comprising the first access point, the positioning device comprising:

a program for generating a plurality of routes, each route being between a third location and one of the plurality of access points; and

a program for selecting one of the plurality of routes based on a criteria.

13. The positioning device of claim 12 wherein the criteria is one of the shortest distance and the shortest expected travel time.

15. The positioning device of claim 10 wherein the first location has a first plurality of access points comprising the first access point and a second location has a second plurality of access points, the positioning device further comprising:

a program for generating a plurality of routes between each of the first plurality of access points and each of the second plurality of access points; and

a program for selecting one of the plurality of routes based on a criteria.

16. The positioning device of claim 15 wherein the criteria is one of the shortest distance and the shortest expected travel time.

17. A machine-readable medium that provides instructions for a processor, which when executed by the processor cause the processor to perform a method comprising:

identifying access points using a positioning device and a map having a plurality of segments;

determining that the positioning device is near a first location;

detecting that the positioning device is off-route at a second location; and

storing the second location as a first access point associated with the first location on the map.

18. The machine-readable medium of claim 17 wherein the first location has a plurality of access points comprising the first access point, the method further comprising:

generating a plurality of routes, each route being between a third location and one of the plurality of access points; and

selecting one of the plurality of routes based on a criteria.

19. The machine-readable medium of claim 17 wherein the first location has a first plurality of access points comprising the first access point and a second location has a second plurality of access points, the method further comprising:

generating a plurality of routes between each of the first plurality of access points and each of the second plurality of access points;

selecting one of the plurality of routes based on a criteria.
