Abstract

An expandable cage supports adjacent vertebra in spine surgery. The expandable cage includes a first supporting member configured to engage tissue and a second supporting member operatively associated with the first supporting member. The first and second supporting members are movable relative to each other. The expandable cage further includes a cam lock mechanism configured to maintain the first and second supporting members in a fixed relative position. In another embodiment, the expandable cage includes a ring plate lock mechanism in lieu of the cam lock mechanism. The ring plate lock mechanism is adapted to maintain the first and second supporting members in a fixed relative position.

Claims

1. An apparatus for spinal surgery, comprising:

a first supporting member configured to engage tissue;

a second supporting member operatively associated with the first supporting member, wherein the first and second supporting members are movable relative to each other; and

a lock mechanism configured to maintain the first and second supporting members in a fixed relative position.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the lock mechanism comprises a camming member and a biasing member operatively associated with the camming member.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the camming member is configured to move between a first position where first and second supporting members are capable of moving relative to each other and a second position where the first and second supporting members are fixed relative to each other.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the biasing member biases the camming member toward the second position.

5. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the first supporting member includes a longitudinal opening and the second supporting member includes a column adapted to be slidably received in the longitudinal opening.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the camming member frictionally engages the column when located in the second position to maintain first and second supporting members in the fixed relative position.

7. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising a threaded fastener operatively coupled to the camming member, wherein the threaded fastener is adapted to urge camming member toward the second position.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first supporting member includes an elongate body extending toward the second supporting member, the elongate body having a threaded hole adapted to receive a portion of an insertion tool.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the elongate member includes an opening leading to the cam lock mechanism, the opening being adapted to receive a portion of an insertion tool.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the elongate body includes an arc-shaped recess extending therealong.

11. An apparatus for spinal surgery, comprising:

a first supporting member configured to engage tissue;

a second supporting member operatively associated with the first supporting member, wherein the first and second supporting members are adapted to move relative to each other; and

ring plate lock mechanism configured to maintain the first and second supporting members in a fixed relative position.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the second supporting member includes a column extending toward the first supporting member.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the ring plate lock mechanism includes a plurality of ring plates each having a hole adapted to receive the column of the second supporting member.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the plurality of ring plates are each adapted to move between a first position where the ring plates are oriented substantially perpendicular to the column and a second position where the ring plates are oriented at an oblique angle relative to the column.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising a biasing member operatively coupled to the plurality of ring plates, wherein the biasing member is adapted to bias the plurality of ring plates toward the second position.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the plurality of ring plates are adapted to engage the column when positioned in the second position to maintain the first and second supporting members at the fixed relative position.

17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the plurality of ring plates are adapted to allow the column to slide through each ring plate when the plurality of ring plates are oriented in the first position.

18. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first supporting member includes a longitudinal opening adapted to slidably receive the column.

19. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein each ring plate of the plurality of ring plates includes a circular body and at least one extending protruding from the circular body.

20. An apparatus for spinal surgery, comprising:

a first member configured to engage tissue;

a second member configured to engage tissue;

a telescoping support member operatively associated with the first and second members, such that the first and second members are movable relative to each other; and

a lock mechanism associated with the telescoping support member and configured to maintain the first and second members in a fixed relative position.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the lock mechanism comprises a camming member and a biasing member operatively associated with the camming member.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the camming member is configured to move between a first position where first and second members are capable of moving relative to each other and a second position where the first and second members are fixed relative to each other.

23. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the second member includes a column extending toward the first supporting member.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the lock mechanism includes a plurality of ring plates each having a hole adapted to receive the column of the second supporting member.

25. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the plurality of ring plates are each adapted to move between a first position where the ring plates are oriented substantially perpendicular to the column and a second position where the ring plates are oriented at an oblique angle relative to the column.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the plurality of ring plates are adapted to engage the column when positioned in the second position to maintain the first and second members at the fixed relative position.

27. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the plurality of ring plates are adapted to allow the column to slide through each ring plate when the plurality of ring plates are oriented in the first position.
