Abstract

A handheld device presents information on a display screen in alternate formats. The device determines its orientation relative to a device user and selects a format based on that orientation. The displayed information may also be scrolled or zoomed based on a detected motion of the device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

presenting information on a handheld device display screen in a first format when the display screen is in a first orientation relative to a user;

receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation different from the first orientation; and

in response to the received indication, presenting information on the display screen in a second format, wherein

one of the first and second formats includes information objects that are either not present, or have different relative positions, in the other of the first and second formats.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the display screen has a M and N dimensions and M>

N,

the first orientation is a landscape orientation,

the first format is an R×

S array, where R<

S,

the second orientation is a portrait orientation,

the second format is a U×

V array, and

at least one of R<

U and S>

V is true.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation includes receiving input from at least one motion sensor located on the handheld device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation includes receiving an indication that a hardware switch on the handheld device has transitioned from a first position to a second position.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein receiving an indication that a hardware switch has transitioned includes receiving an indication that a sliding member holding the display screen has moved relative to other components of the handheld device.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein receiving an indication that a hardware switch has transitioned includes receiving an indication that a hinge has opened.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein

presenting information on a handheld device display screen in a first format includes highlighting a first information element of the presented information, and

presenting information on the display screen in a second format includes highlighting an information element of the presented information corresponding to the first information element.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein

presenting information on a handheld device display screen in a first format includes presenting an electronic service guide (ESG) in a vertical service guide format, and

presenting information on the display screen in a second format includes presenting an ESG in a horizontal service guide format.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an indication that the display screen has been displaced in a direction generally parallel to a plane of the display screen; and

in response to the received indication of displacement, laterally scrolling information presented on the display screen in a direction opposite to the first direction.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an indication that the display screen has been displaced in a direction generally perpendicular to a plane of the display screen; and

in response to the received indication of displacement, zooming information presented on the display screen.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an indication that the display screen has been rotated about an axis generally parallel to a plane of the display screen; and

in response to the received indication of rotation, scrolling information presented on the display screen in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the display screen has a M and N dimensions, and wherein M=N.

13. A machine-readable medium having machine-executable instructions for performing:

presenting information on a handheld device display screen in a first format when the display screen is in a first orientation relative to a user;

receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation different from the first orientation; and

in response to the received indication, presenting information on the display screen in a second format, wherein

one of the first and second formats includes information objects that are either not present, or have different relative positions, in the other of the first and second formats.

14. The machine-readable medium of claim 13, wherein:

the display screen has a M and N dimensions and M>

N,

the first orientation is a landscape orientation,

the first format is an R×

S array, where R<

S,

the second orientation is a portrait orientation,

the second format is a U×

V array, and

at least one of R<

U and S>

V is true.

15. The machine-readable medium of claim 13, wherein receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation includes receiving input from at least one motion sensor located on the handheld device.

16. The machine-readable medium of claim 13, wherein receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation includes receiving an indication that a hardware switch on the handheld device has transitioned from a first position to a second position.

17. The machine-readable medium of claim 13, wherein

presenting information on a handheld device display screen in a first format includes presenting an electronic service guide (ESG) in a vertical service guide format, and

presenting information on the display screen in a second format includes presenting an ESG in a horizontal service guide format.

18. An apparatus comprising:

a display screen; and

a processor configured to perform operations that include

presenting information on the display screen in a first format when the display screen is in a first orientation relative to a user,

receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation different from the first orientation, and

in response to the received indication, presenting information on the display screen in a second format, wherein

one of the first and second formats includes information objects that are either not present, or have different relative positions, in the other of the first and second formats.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein:

the display screen has a M and N dimensions and M>

N,

the first orientation is a landscape orientation,

the first format is an R×

S array, where R<

S,

the second orientation is a portrait orientation,

the second format is a U×

V array, and

at least one of R<

U and S>

V is true.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation includes receiving input from at least one motion sensor located on a handheld device incorporating the display screen and the processor.

21. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein receiving an indication that the display screen is in a second orientation includes receiving an indication that a hardware switch on a handheld device incorporating the display screen and the processor has transitioned from a first position to a second position.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein receiving an indication that a hardware switch has transitioned includes receiving an indication that a sliding member holding the display screen has moved relative to other components of the handheld device.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein receiving an indication that a hardware switch has transitioned includes receiving an indication that a hinge has opened.

24. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein

presenting information on the display screen in a first format includes highlighting a first information element of the presented information, and

presenting information on the display screen in a second format includes highlighting an information element of the presented information corresponding to the first information element.

25. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein

presenting information on the display screen in a first format includes presenting an electronic service guide (ESG) in a vertical service guide format, and

presenting information on the display screen in a second format includes presenting an ESG in a horizontal service guide format.

26. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the processor is further configured to perform operations that include

receiving an indication that the display screen has been displaced in a direction generally parallel to a plane of the display screen, and

in response to the received indication of displacement, laterally scrolling information presented on the display screen in a direction opposite to the first direction.

27. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the processor is further configured to perform operations that include

receiving an indication that the display screen has been displaced in a direction generally perpendicular to a plane of the display screen, and

in response to the received indication of displacement, zooming information presented on the display screen.

28. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the processor is further configured to perform operations that include

receiving an indication that the display screen has been rotated about an axis generally parallel to a plane of the display screen, and

in response to the received indication of rotation, scrolling information presented on the display screen in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation.

29. An integrated circuit, comprising:

one or more motion sensors; and

a processor configured to perform operations with the one or more sensors that include

configuring information for presentation in a first format when the integrated circuit is in a first orientation relative to a user,

receiving an indication that the integrated circuit is in a second orientation different from the first orientation, and

in response to the received indication, configuring information for presentation in a second format, wherein

one of the first and second formats includes information objects that are either not present, or have different relative positions, in the other of the first and second formats.

30. The integrated circuit of claim 29, wherein the processor is operatively connected to a display screen for presenting information, and wherein

the display screen has a M and N dimensions and M>

N,

the first orientation is a landscape orientation,

the first format is an R×

S array, where R<

S,

the second orientation is a portrait orientation,

the second format is a U×

V array, and

at least one of R<

U and S>

V is true.

31. The integrated circuit of claim 29, wherein receiving an indication that the integrated circuit is in a second orientation different from the first orientation includes receiving input from at least one of the one or more motion sensors.

32. The integrated circuit of claim 29, wherein the processor is operatively connected to a display screen for presenting information, and wherein

presenting information on the display screen in the first format includes presenting an electronic service guide (ESG) in a vertical service guide format, and

presenting information on the display screen in the second format includes presenting an ESG in a horizontal service guide format.

33. An apparatus comprising:

a display screen;

means for receiving an indication that the display screen is in a first or second orientation; and

means for presenting information on the display screen in a first format in response to a received indication that the display screen is in the first orientation and for presenting information on the display screen in a second format in response to a received indication that the display screen is in the second orientation, wherein

one of the first and second formats includes information objects that are either not present, or have different relative positions, in the other of the first and second formats.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein

the display screen has a M and N dimensions and M>

N,

the first orientation is a landscape orientation,

the first format is an R×

S array, where R<

S,

the second orientation is a portrait orientation,

the second format is a U×

V array, and

at least one of R<

U and S>

V is true.

35. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein

the first format includes an electronic service guide (ESG) in a vertical service guide format, and

the second format includes presenting an ESG in a horizontal service guide format.

36. An apparatus, comprising:

a display screen;

a sliding member coupling the display screen to the apparatus and permitting sliding movement of the display screen relative to other components of the apparatus; and

a processor configured to perform operations that include

receiving an indication that the sliding member is in a first position corresponding to a landscape orientation of the display screen relative to a user of the apparatus,

in response to receiving an indication that the sliding member is in the first position, presenting an electronic service guide on the display screen in a horizontal service guide format,

receiving an indication that the sliding member is in a second position corresponding to a portrait orientation of the display screen relative to a user of the apparatus,

in response to receiving an indication that the sliding member is in the second position, presenting an electronic service guide on the display screen in a vertical service guide format,

receiving an indication that the display screen has been displaced in a direction generally parallel to a plane of the display screen, and

in response to the received indication of displacement, laterally scrolling information presented on the display screen in a direction opposite to the first direction.
