Abstract

A method for decoding a compressed image stream, the image stream having a plurality of frames, each frame consisting of a merged image including pixels from a left image and pixels from a right image. The method involves the steps of receiving each merged image; changing a clock domain from the original input signal to an internal domain; for each merged image, placing at least two adjacent pixels into an input buffer and interpolating an intermediate pixel, for forming a reconstructed left frame and a reconstructed right frame according to provenance of the adjacent pixels; and reconstructing a stereoscopic image stream from the left and right image frames. The invention also teaches a system for decoding a compressed image stream.

8. A method for encoding a stereoscopic image stream comprised of a plurality of right and left image frames, the method comprising:

reading one of odd- and even-numbered pixels of each of said right frames and placing them in one half of a frame buffer;

reading one of even- and odd-numbered pixels of each of said left frames corresponding to said right frames and placing them in the other half of a frame buffer to form a mosaic, so that one side of said mosaic comprises the odd or even numbered pixels of said right frames and the other side of said mosaic comprises the complementary even or odd numbered pixels of said left frames.

19. A system for processing a stereoscopic image stream having a merged frame format, comprising:

a source of said stream;

a decoder for decoding said stream;

a spatial interpolation module for spatially interpolating each merged frame of said stereoscopic image stream into reconstructed frame data;

an output controller generating, according to a selected mode, from said reconstructed frame data at least one display input signal in a selected one of a plurality of display modes;

a temporal interpolation module receiving said reconstructed right and left frame stream and temporally interpolating from said reconstructed right and left frame stream temporally interpolated frames, wherein said temporal interpolation varies according to said selected one of said plurality of display modes; and

an output for outputting a stream of reconstructed and temporally interpolated right and left images.

20. The system according to claim 19, wherein said plurality of display modes comprise a conventional 2D mode and one or more stereoscopic 3D display modes.

21. The system according to claim 20, wherein said plurality of display modes comprise two or more stereoscopic 3D display modes.

22. The system according to claim 19, wherein said plurality of display modes comprise two or more stereoscopic 3D display modes.

23. The system according to claim 19, wherein said system further includes an anti-flicker filter downstream of said temporal interpolation module.

24. The system according to claim 19, wherein said system further includes a synchronisation module for synchronising shutter eyeglasses with said output.

25. The method according to claim 19, wherein said plurality of display modes comprise at least two modes selected from the group consisting of:

page flipping, row interleaved, column interleaved, simultaneous dual presentation, and anaglyphic and conventional 2D.

26. The method according to claim 19, wherein said plurality of display modes comprise two or more selected from the group consisting of:

page flipping, row interleaved, column interleaved, simultaneous dual presentation, and anaglyphic.
