Abstract

An implantable access port for use in transferring a fluid transdermally between an external fluid storage or dispensing device and a site within a patient'"'"'s body is disclosed. The access port includes a base, a bowl-shaped reservoir defined within the base by a smooth surfaced wall, and a septum secured to the base and enclosing the reservoir within the base. The access port also has an outlet passageway defined within the base and extending in communication with a reservoir outlet defined within the reservoir and an external opening defined in the exterior of the base.

Claims

1. An implantable access port for use in transferring a fluid transdermally between an external fluid storage or dispensing device and a site within a patient'"'"'s body, said access port comprising:

a base;

a means for increasing the purging performance of the port, comprising;

a bowl-shaped reservoir defined within the base by a smooth surfaced wall, wherein the reservoir has a top edge, a bottom portion and a side portion that extends between the bottom portion and the top edge;

a reservoir outlet defined on the side portion of the reservoir; and

an outlet passageway in communication with the reservoir outlet, wherein the reservoir outlet and the outlet passageway are positioned in a plane that overlies and is spaced from a center of the bottom portion of the reservoir and the top edge of the reservoir; and

a septum secured to the base and enclosing the reservoir within the base.

2. The access port of claim 1, wherein the reservoir has a reservoir axis extending therethrough the center of the bottom portion, wherein the outlet passageway has a passageway axis, and wherein the passageway axis bisects the reservoir axis.

3. The access port of claim 2, wherein the passageway axis bisects the reservoir axis at substantially a right angle.

The access port of claim 1, wherein the reservoir has a reservoir axis extending therethrough the center of the bottom portion, wherein the outlet passageway has a passageway axis, and wherein the outlet passageway is offset from the center of the reservoir such that the passageway axis does not bisect the reservoir axis.

5. The access port of claim 4, wherein the outlet passageway axis extends substantially tangent to a portion of the wall of the reservoir that is spaced from the center of the reservoir.

6. The access port of claim 1, wherein the plane is substantially parallel to the top edge of the reservoir.

7. The access port of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is defined by a single continuous wall.

8. The access port of claim 7, wherein the reservoir is defined by a curvilinear wall.

9. The access port of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is formed as a parabola.

10. The access port of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is hemispherical in shape.

11. The access port of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is semi-hemispherical in shape.

12. The access port of claim 1, further comprising a retainer ring configured for connecting to an exterior portion of the base, wherein the retainer ring defines an opening circumferentially surrounded by a lip portion.

13. The access port of claim 12, wherein the base has an upper shoulder surface surrounding the top edge of the reservoir, and wherein, when the retainer ring is connected to the base, the upper shoulder surface of the base and the lip portion of the retainer ring define a circumferentially extending slot having a height dimension.

14. The access port of claim 13, wherein the septum has an edge portion, and wherein the septum is substantially planar and has a substantially uniform height.

15. The access port of claim 14, wherein the height of the septum is greater than the height of the lip portion.

16. The access port of claim 15, wherein the edge portion of the septum is configured to be received therein the formed circumferentially extending slot such that the edge portion of the septum is compressively seated therebetween the base and the retainer ring.

17. The access port of claim 1, wherein the outlet passageway is defined within the base, and wherein the outlet passageway is in communication with an external opening defined in the exterior of the base.

18. The access port of claim 17, wherein the external base opening is configured to be placed in sealed fluid communication with a catheter.

19. The access port of claim 12, wherein the base and the retainer ring of the access port is comprised of a biocompatible material.

20. The access port of claim 1, wherein the septum of the access port is comprised of an elastomeric material.

21. The access port of claim 1, further comprising at least one feature of the access port structured to identify the access port subsequent to subcutaneous implantation.

22. The access port of claim 21, wherein the at least one feature comprises at least one of the following:

a protrusion, a protruding region, a circumferentially extending protrusion, a recess, a recessed region, a circumferentially extending recess, at least one suture aperture, an overhanging rim feature, a lip feature, an undulation, and adjacent features of different elevation.

23. The access port of claim 21, wherein the at least one feature comprises a marking thereon the access port that is formed of material that is visible under application of x-ray or ultrasound technology.

24. The access port of claim 21, wherein the at least one feature comprises a marking therein the access port that is formed of material that is visible under application of x-ray or ultrasound technology.

25. The access port of claim 21, wherein the at least one feature comprises a RFID tag.

26. The access port of claim 21, wherein the at least one feature of the access port is configured to identify the access port as being power injectable subsequent to subcutaneous implantation.

27. An implantable access port for use in transferring a fluid transdermally between an external fluid storage or dispensing device and a site within a patient'"'"'s body, said access port comprising:

a housing comprising

a base having a shoulder surface;

a retainer ring configured for connecting to an exterior portion of the base, wherein the retainer ring defines an access aperture circumferentially surrounded by a lip portion, wherein, when the retainer ring is connected to the base, the upper shoulder surface of the base and the lip portion of the retainer ring define a circumferentially extending slot having a height dimension; and

a means for increasing the purging performance of the access port, comprising;

a bowl-shaped reservoir defined within the base by a smooth surfaced wall, wherein the reservoir has a top edge, a bottom portion and a side portion that extends between the bottom portion and the top edge, wherein the top edge of the reservoir adjoins the shoulder surface of the base;

a reservoir outlet defined on the side portion of the reservoir; and

an outlet passageway in communication with the reservoir outlet, wherein the reservoir outlet and the outlet passageway are positioned in a plane that overlies and is spaced from a center of the bottom portion of the reservoir and the top edge of the reservoir; and

a septum having an edge portion, wherein the septum is substantially planar and has a substantially uniform height, and wherein the edge portion of the septum is configured to be received therein the formed circumferentially extending slot such that the edge portion of the septum is compressively seated therebetween the base and the retainer ring and seals the access aperture of the retainer ring.

28. The access port of claim 27, wherein the reservoir has a reservoir axis extending therethrough the center of the bottom portion, wherein the outlet passageway has a passageway axis, and wherein the passageway axis bisects the reservoir axis.

29. The access port of claim 28, wherein the passageway axis bisects the reservoir axis at substantially a right angle.

30. The access port of claim 27, wherein the reservoir has a reservoir axis extending therethrough the center of the bottom portion, wherein the outlet passageway has a passageway axis, and wherein outlet passageway is offset from the center of the reservoir such that the passageway axis does not bisect the reservoir axis.

31. The access port of claim 30, wherein the outlet passageway axis extends substantially tangent to a portion of the wall of the reservoir that is spaced from the center of the reservoir.

32. The access port of claim 27, wherein the plane is substantially parallel to the top edge of the reservoir.

33. The access port of claim 27, wherein the reservoir is defined by a single continuous wall.

34. The access port of claim 33, wherein the reservoir is defined by a curvilinear wall.

35. The access port of claim 27, wherein the reservoir is formed as a parabola.

36. The access port of claim 27, wherein the reservoir is hemispherical in shape.

37. The access port of claim 27, wherein the reservoir is semi-hemispherical in shape.

38. The access port of claim 27, wherein the height of the septum is greater than the height of the lip portion.

39. The access port of claim 27, further comprising at least one feature of the access port structured to identify the access port subsequent to subcutaneous implantation.

40. The access port of claim 39, wherein the at least one feature comprises at least one of the following:

a protrusion, a protruding region, a circumferentially extending protrusion, a recess, a recessed region, a circumferentially extending recess, at least one suture aperture, an overhanging rim feature, a lip feature, an undulation, and adjacent features of different elevation.

41. The access port of claim 39, wherein the at least one feature comprises a marking thereon the access port that is formed of material that is visible under application of x-ray or ultrasound technology.

42. The access port of claim 39, wherein the at least one feature comprises a marking therein the access port that is formed of material that is visible under application of x-ray or ultrasound technology.

43. The access port of claim 39, wherein the feature comprises a RFID tag mounted thereon the access port.

44. The access port of claim 27, wherein the at least one feature of the access port is configured to identify the access port as being power injectable subsequent to subcutaneous implantation.

45. A method of identifying a subcutaneously implanted access port, comprising:

a) providing a subcutaneously implanted access port comprising;

a base;

a means for increasing the purging performance of the port, comprising;

a bowl-shaped reservoir defined within the base by a smooth surfaced wall, wherein the reservoir has a top edge, a bottom portion and a side portion that extends between the bottom portion and the top edge;

a reservoir outlet defined on the side portion of the reservoir; and

an outlet passageway in communication with the reservoir outlet, wherein the reservoir outlet and the outlet passageway are positioned in a plane that overlies and is spaced from a center of the bottom portion of the reservoir and the top edge of the reservoir; and

a septum secured to the base and enclosing the reservoir within the base; and

b) perceiving at least one feature of the subcutaneously implanted access port; and

c) identifying the subcutaneously implanted access port in response to perceiving the at least one feature.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein perceiving the at least one feature comprises employing at least one of palpation, x-ray, ultrasound, and RFID technology.

47. The method of claim 45, wherein perceiving the at least one feature comprises perceiving at least one of the following:

a protrusion, a protruding region, a circumferentially extending protrusion, a recess, a recessed region, a circumferentially extending recess, at least one suture aperture, an overhanging rim feature, a lip feature, an undulation, and adjacent features of different elevation.

48. The method of claim 45, wherein identifying the subcutaneously implanted access port comprises identifying the subcutaneously implanted access port as being power injectable in response to perceiving the at least one feature.

49. An implantable access port for use in transferring a fluid transdermally between an external fluid storage or dispensing device and a site within a patient'"'"'s body, said access port comprising:

a housing comprising

a base having a shoulder surface;

a retainer ring configured for connecting to an exterior portion of the base, wherein the retainer ring defines an access aperture circumferentially surrounded by a lip portion, wherein, when the retainer ring is connected to the base, the upper shoulder surface of the base and the lip portion of the retainer ring define a circumferentially extending slot having a height dimension; and

a means for increasing the purging performance of the access port, comprising;

a bowl-shaped reservoir defined within the base by a smooth surfaced wall, wherein the reservoir has a top edge, a bottom portion and a side portion that extends between the bottom portion and the top edge, wherein the top edge of the reservoir adjoins the shoulder surface of the base;

a reservoir outlet defined on the side portion of the reservoir; and

an outlet passageway in communication with the reservoir outlet, wherein the reservoir outlet and the outlet passageway are positioned in a plane that overlies and is spaced from a center of the bottom portion of the reservoir and the top edge of the reservoir;

a septum having an edge portion, wherein the septum is substantially planar and has a substantially uniform height, and wherein the edge portion of the septum is configured to be received therein the formed circumferentially extending slot such that the edge portion of the septum is compressively seated therebetween the base and the retainer ring and seals the access aperture of the retainer ring; and

at least one feature of the access port structured to identify the access port as being power injectable subsequent to subcutaneous implantation.

50. The access port of claim 49, wherein the at least one feature comprises at least one of the following:

a protrusion, a protruding region, a circumferentially extending protrusion, a recess, a recessed region, a circumferentially extending recess, at least one suture aperture, an overhanging rim feature, a lip feature, an undulation, and adjacent features of different elevation.

51. The access port of claim 49, wherein the at least one feature comprises a marking thereon the access port that is formed of material that is visible under application of x-ray or ultrasound technology.

52. The access port of claim 49, wherein the at least one feature comprises a marking therein the access port that is formed of material that is visible under application of x-ray or ultrasound technology.

53. The access port of claim 49, wherein the feature comprises a RFID tag mounted thereon the access port.
