Abstract

A method for registering a network application with an application programming interface (API) framework. In operation, a registrar may send a registration message that associates a namespace with the network application to the API framework. In one implementation, the namespace associated with the network application may be a uniform resource identifier. In another implementation, the registration message may specify a format of the standardized clients, a security policy, and the application resources associated with the network application.

Claims

1. A method for registering a network application with an application programming interface (API) framework, comprising:

sending a registration message that associates a namespace with the network application to the API framework and that specifies an application resource associated with the network application; and

storing create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) methods for the application resource associated with the network application, the CRUD methods being configured to be invoked by a request from the API framework.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the API framework creates an API associated with the network application in response to receiving the registration message.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the network application is a Web application.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the request is a representational state transfer (REST) request or a SOAP request.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the namespace is a universal resource identifier (URI) associated with the network application.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the registration message further comprises a format of the standardized clients.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the registration message further comprises a security policy for the network application or the application resource or both.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the security policy specifies a rule for restricting client access to the network application, or the application resource, or both.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining the application resource associated with the network application; and

creating the CRUD methods.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the request is a SOAP request.

11. A computer-readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

send a registration message that associates a namespace with a Web application to an application programming interface (API) framework and specifies an application resource associated with the Web application; and

store create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) methods for the application resource associated with the Web application, the CRUD methods being configured to be invoked by a representational state transfer (REST) request from the API framework.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the namespace is a universal resource identifier (URI) associated with the Web application.

13. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the registration message further comprises a format of the standardized clients.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the registration message further comprises a security policy for the Web application or the application resource or both.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 14, wherein the security policy specifies a rule for restricting client access to the Web application, or the application resource, or both.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, further comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

determine the application resource associated with the Web application; and

create the CRUD methods.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the request is a SOAP request.

18. A computer system, comprising:

a first processor; and

a first memory comprising program instructions executable by the first processor to;

send a registration message that associates a namespace with a Web application to an application programming interface (API) framework and specifies an application resource associated with the network application;

determine the application resource associated with the network application;

create one or more create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) methods for the application resource associated with the network application, the CRUD methods being configured to be invoked by a representational state transfer (REST) request from the API framework; and

store the CRUD methods.

19. The computer system of claim 18, further comprising a second processor and a second memory comprising program instructions executable by the second processor to create an API within the API framework in response to the API framework receiving the registration message, the API being associated with the network application.

20. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the second memory further comprises program instructions executable by the second processor to initiate the REST request in response to a hypertext transfer protocol request from a standardized client.
