Abstract

A power system for a mobile workstation includes a docking station for a removable battery, a power bus, and a power interface having an output interface electrically connected with the power bus. The power system further includes a detector configured to detect user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station, and a switching device coupled with the detector and configured to switch the power interface from a first power sourcing mode to a second power sourcing mode receiving power from a back-up battery, in response to detecting user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station.

Claims

1. A power system for a mobile workstation comprising:

a docking station for a removable battery;

a power bus configured to supply power to a computerized device of the mobile workstation;

a power interface having a first input interface electrically connected with the docking station, a second input interface and an output interface electrically connected with the power bus;

a detector configured to detect user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station; and

a switching device coupled with the detector and configured to switch the power interface from a first power sourcing mode receiving power via the first input interface to a second power sourcing mode receiving power via the second input interface, responsive to detecting user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station.

2. The power system of claim 1 further comprising a removable battery assembly which includes a removable battery and is configured to dock with the docking station, and wherein the detector is resident on the removable battery assembly.

3. The power system of claim 2 wherein the detector comprises a sensor having a first output state and a second output state comprising a user interaction state.

4. The power system of claim 3 wherein the removable battery assembly includes a handle, and wherein the sensor comprises a proximity sensor positioned in the handle.

5. The power system of claim 4 wherein the removable battery assembly is a first removable battery assembly, the power system further comprising at least one other removable battery assembly which is interchangeable with the first removable battery assembly.

6. The power system of claim 2 further comprising a back-up battery electrically connected with the second input interface, wherein the power interface is configured to receive power from the back-up battery when the power interface is in the second power sourcing mode.

7. The power system of claim 2 wherein the switching device comprises a microprocessor and a solid state electronic switch controllably coupled with the microprocessor.

8. The power system of claim 2 further comprising at least one auxiliary power output module, and wherein the power interface is configured to supply power to the at least one auxiliary power output module in either of the first power sourcing mode or the second power sourcing mode.

9. The power system of claim 8 wherein the at least one auxiliary power output module comprises a DC output module and an AC output module.

The power system of claim 2 further comprising a first display resident on the battery assembly and configured to display a charge state of the battery, and a second display which is not resident on the battery assembly, the second display having a first display mode for displaying a charge state of the battery when the power interface is in the first power sourcing mode, and a second display mode different from the first display mode.

11. The power system of claim 10 wherein the second display mode comprises a timing mode, and wherein the microprocessor is configured to switch the second display from the first display mode to the second display mode responsive to detecting user interaction with the removable battery.

12. A method of operating a power system of a mobile workstation comprising the steps of:

decoupling a removable battery from the power system;

detecting user interaction with the removable battery prior to completing the step of decoupling the removable battery; and

switching a power interface of the power system from a first power sourcing mode receiving power from the removable battery to a second power sourcing mode receiving power from a second battery, responsive to detecting user interaction with the removable battery.

The method of claim 12 wherein the decoupling step includes disconnecting an electrical connector of the removable battery from an electrical connector of the power system, and wherein the detecting step includes detecting user interaction prior to disconnecting the electrical connector of the removable battery from the electrical connector of the power system.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the detecting step comprises sensing user proximity to a handle of a removable battery assembly which includes the removable battery.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising a step of supplying power to a computerized device of the mobile workstation from a back-up battery resident on the mobile workstation in the second power sourcing mode.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising the steps of:

coupling a substitute battery assembly with the power system subsequent to the decoupling step, including connecting an electrical connector of the substitute battery assembly with the electrical connector of the power system; and

switching the power interface back to the first power sourcing mode in response to coupling the substitute battery assembly with the power system.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising the steps of activating a countdown timer in response to detecting user interaction with the removable battery, and deactivating the countdown timer in response to coupling a substitute battery assembly with the power system.

18. A mobile workstation comprising:

a frame and a docking station for a removable battery mounted to the frame, the docking station including an electrical connector; and

a power system including a power interface having a first input interface electrically connected with the docking station, a second input interface and an output interface connected with a power bus configured to supply power to a computerized device of the mobile workstation;

the power system further including a detector configured to detect user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station, and a switching device coupled with the detector and configured to switch the power interface from a first power sourcing mode receiving power via the first input interface to a second power sourcing mode receiving power via the second input interface, responsive to detecting user interaction with the removable battery.

19. The mobile workstation of claim 18 further comprising a removable battery assembly configured to dock with the docking station, and wherein the detector comprises a sensor resident on the removable battery assembly.
