Abstract

In a display system, a color gamut of the displayed images is extended by adding one or more primary colors lying outside a tristimulus color space triangle to a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) system, modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside the tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside the tristimulus color space triangle, and adding a non-tristimulus vertex to construct an extended-gamut polygon. The display system adds one or more primary colors to the RGB system, which lie outside the tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space.

15. A method for extending a color gamut comprising:

adding one or more primary colors lying outside a tristimulus color space triangle to a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) system;

modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle; and

adding a non-tristimulus vertex to construct an extended-gamut polygon.

16. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said one or more primary colors added to said RGB system lie outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space.

17. The method as recited in claim 16, wherein said non-tristimulus vertex is added to construct an extended-gamut polygon in said CIE color space.

The method as recited in claim 16, wherein said light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space is modulated by a plurality of pixel structures.

19. The method as recited in claim 18, wherein a frequency and a duration of pulses of said plurality of pixel structures are temporally proportioned to and synchronized with the number of light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within said CIE color space.

20. The method as recited in claim 19, wherein at least one pulse width of a first primary color is not of identical duration to at least one pulse width of a second primary color, wherein said first and second primary colors lie within said CIE color space.

21. The method as recited in claim 19, wherein a pulse width for each primary color lying inside and outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within said CIE color space is of identical duration.

22. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said non-tristimulus vertex is added by adding one or more light sources that emit a target color defined at said non-tristimulus vertex.

23. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said non-tristimulus vertex is added by generating a target color defined at said non-tristimulus vertex by composition of dissimilar surrogate light sources that chromatically sum up to said target color based on their weighted intensities.

24. A method for extending a color gamut comprising:

adding one or more primary colors lying outside a tristimulus color space triangle to a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) system;

driving both light sources of primary colors lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources of said one or more primary colors lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle to provide light to a plurality of pixels;

modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle; and

adding a non-tristimulus vertex to construct an extended-gamut polygon.

25. The method as recited in claim 24, wherein said one or more primary colors added to said RGB system lie outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space.

26. The method as recited in claim 25, wherein said non-tristimulus vertex is added to construct an extended-gamut polygon in said CIE color space.

The method as recited in claim 25, wherein said light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space is modulated by said plurality of pixels.

28. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein a frequency and a duration of pulses of said plurality of pixels are temporally proportioned to and synchronized with the number of light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within said CIE color space.

29. The method as recited in claim 28, wherein at least one pulse width of a first primary color is not of identical duration to at least one pulse width of a second primary color, wherein said first and second primary colors lie within said CIE color space.

30. The method as recited in claim 28, wherein a pulse width for each primary color lying inside and outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within said CIE color space is of identical duration.

31. The method as recited in claim 24, wherein said non-tristimulus vertex is added by adding one or more light sources that emit a target color defined at said non-tristimulus vertex.

32. The method as recited in claim 24, wherein said non-tristimulus vertex is added by generating a target color defined at said non-tristimulus vertex by composition of dissimilar surrogate light sources that chromatically sum up to said target color based on their weighted intensities.

33. A display comprising:

a plurality of pixels on said display; and

a plurality of drive lamps for driving light sources to provide light to said plurality of pixels, wherein said plurality of drive lamps are driven to cause each of said plurality of pixels to generate a color palette including primary colors lying inside a tristimulus color space triangle and one or more primary colors lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle, wherein said color palette is expanded by modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle, wherein a non-tristimulus vertex is added to construct an extended-gamut polygon.

34. The display as recited in claim 33, wherein said one or more primary colors added to said RGB system lie outside said tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space.
