Abstract

A system and method for wirelessly transmitting audiovisual information. First audiovisual information may be encoded using a first error correction coding method. A plurality of packets may be generated, including the first audiovisual information, second audiovisual information, and control information. The second audiovisual information may not be encoded using the first error correction coding method, and the control information may indicate this. The plurality of packets may be wirelessly transmitted. The control information may be usable by a receiver to determine that the second audiovisual information is not encoded using the first error correction coding method, and may thereby determine that the second audiovisual information is a different service version than the first audiovisual information.

Claims

1. A method for transmitting audiovisual information to a mobile device in a wireless manner, wherein the mobile device comprises a receiver, the method comprising:

encoding first audiovisual information using a first error correction coding method;

generating a plurality of packets, wherein the plurality of packets comprise the encoded first audiovisual information, second audiovisual information, and control information, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

transmitting the plurality of packets in a wireless manner;

wherein the control information is usable by the receiver to determine that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, thereby indicating to the receiver that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information.

2. The method of claim 1,

wherein the first error correction coding method is a convolutional encoding method.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

encoding the second audiovisual information using a second error correction coding method.

4. The method of claim 3,

wherein the second error correction coding method is a systematic block coding method.

5. The method of claim 1,

wherein the control information is located in a different one or more packets of the plurality of packets than the first and second audiovisual information.

6. The method of claim 1,

wherein at least part of the first audiovisual information and at least part of the second audiovisual information are co-located in at least one packet of the plurality of packets.

7. A system for transmitting audiovisual information to a mobile device in a wireless manner, the system comprising:

memory for storing audiovisual information;

transmit logic coupled to the memory and configured to;

encode first audiovisual information using a first error correction coding method;

generate a plurality of packets, wherein the plurality of packets comprise the encoded first audiovisual information, second audiovisual information, and control information, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

a transmitter coupled to the transmit logic for transmitting the plurality of packets to the mobile device in a wireless manner;

wherein the control information is usable by the mobile device to determine that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, thereby indicating to the mobile device that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information.

8. A system for generating packetized audiovisual information for transmission to a mobile device in a wireless manner, the system comprising:

transmit logic configured to;

encode first audiovisual information using a first error correction coding method;

generate a plurality of packets, wherein the plurality of packets comprise the encoded first audiovisual information, second audiovisual information, and control information, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

wherein the plurality of packets are configured to be transmitted to the mobile device in a wireless manner;

wherein the control information is usable by the mobile device to determine that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, thereby indicating to the mobile device that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information.

9. The system of claim 8,

wherein the first error correction coding method is a convolutional encoding method.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the transmit logic is also configured to:

encode the second audiovisual information using a second error correction coding method.

11. The system of claim 10,

wherein the second error correction coding method is a systematic block coding method.

12. The system of claim 8,

wherein the control information is located in a different one or more packets of the plurality of packets than the first and second audiovisual information.

13. The system of claim 8,

wherein at least part of the first audiovisual information and at least part of the second audiovisual information are co-located in at least one packet of the plurality of packets.

14. A computer readable memory medium storing program instructions for generating packets for transmission of audiovisual information to a mobile device in a wireless manner, wherein the program instructions are executable to:

encode first audiovisual information using a first error correction coding method;

generate a plurality of packets, wherein the plurality of packets comprise the encoded first audiovisual information, second audiovisual information, and control information, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

wherein the plurality of packets are configured to be transmitted to the mobile device in a wireless manner;

wherein the control information is usable by the mobile device to determine that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method, thereby indicating to the mobile device that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information.

15. A method for receiving and presenting audiovisual information at a mobile device, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of packets in a wireless manner;

wherein the plurality of packets comprises first audiovisual information and second audiovisual information, wherein the first audiovisual information is encoded using a first error correction coding method, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded using the first error correction coding method;

wherein the plurality of packets further comprise control information, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

determining, based on the control information, that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

determining that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information because the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

presenting at least a portion of the audiovisual information on the mobile device.

16. The method of claim 15,

wherein the first error correction coding method is a convolutional encoding method.

17. The method of claim 15,

wherein the second audiovisual information is encoded using a second error correction coding method.

18. The method of claim 17,

wherein the second error correction coding method is a systematic block coding method.

19. The method of claim 15,

wherein the control information is located in a different one or more packets of the plurality of packets than the first and second audiovisual information.

20. The method of claim 15,

wherein at least part of the first audiovisual information and at least part of the second audiovisual information are co-located in at least one packet of the plurality of packets.

21. A mobile device for receiving and presenting audiovisual information, the mobile device comprising:

an antenna for receiving a plurality of packets in a wireless manner, wherein the plurality of packets comprises first audiovisual information and second audiovisual information, wherein the first audiovisual information is encoded using a first error correction coding method, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded using the first error correction coding method;

wherein the plurality of packets further comprise control information, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

a display and one or more speakers; and

receiver logic coupled to the antenna, the display, and the one or more speakers, wherein the receiver logic is configured to;

determine, based on the control information, that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

determine that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information because the audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method; and

present at least a portion of the audiovisual information on one or more of the display or the one or more speakers.

22. A system for receiving and processing audiovisual information, the system comprising:

an input for receiving a plurality of packets, wherein the plurality of packets were transmitted in a wireless manner, wherein the plurality of packets comprises first audiovisual information and second audiovisual information, wherein the first audiovisual information is encoded using a first error correction coding method, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded using the first error correction coding method, wherein the plurality of packets further comprise control information, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

receiver logic coupled to the input, wherein the receiver logic is configured to;

determine, based on the control information, that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method; and

determine that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information because the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

wherein the audiovisual information is configured to be presented on a display and one or more speakers.

23. The system of claim 22,

wherein the first error correction coding method is a convolutional encoding method.

24. The system of claim 22,

wherein the second audiovisual information is encoded using a second error correction coding method.

25. The system of claim 24,

wherein the second error correction coding method is a systematic block coding method.

26. The system of claim 22,

wherein the control information is located in a different one or more packets of the plurality of packets than the first and second portions of the plurality of packets.

27. The system of claim 22,

wherein at least part of the first audiovisual information and at least part of the second audiovisual information are co-located in at least one packet of the plurality of packets.

28. A computer readable memory medium storing program instructions for receiving and processing audiovisual information, wherein the program instructions are executable to:

receive a plurality of packets in a wireless manner,

wherein the plurality of packets comprises first audiovisual information and second audiovisual information, wherein the first audiovisual information is encoded using a first error correction coding method, wherein the second audiovisual information is not encoded using the first error correction coding method, wherein the plurality of packets further comprise control information, wherein the control information indicates that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

determine, based on the control information, that the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method; and

determine that the second audiovisual information comprises a different service version than the first audiovisual information because the second audiovisual information is not encoded according to the first error correction coding method;

present at least a portion of the audiovisual information on one or more of a display or one or more speakers.
