Abstract

The claimed subject matter relates to various architectures that can, inter alia, facilitate creation of a synch file as well as facilitate interpretation of the synch file. Both creation and interpretation can be accomplished in conjunction with an original media asset. The synch file can include transformation commands that can operate on a presentation of the asset rather than upon the asset itself. Accordingly, what is actually perceived by a content consumer during a presentation of the asset need not be exactly what the asset creator fixed in a tangible medium. Rather, the content consumer can observe a derivative media presentation based upon interpretation of the synch file.

Claims

1. A system that facilitates creation of a synch file employed to provide a derivative media experience without destructive editing or modification of an original media asset, comprising:

a catalog component that accesses an original media asset, the original media asset includes at least one of metadata or special metadata;

a user-interface component that receives input associated with at least one of a transformation of the original media asset or an addition of content; and

a composition component that creates a synch file base upon the input, the synch file supplements the original media asset and includes a command that describes a presentation transformation action to be performed upon an audio/visual output of the original media asset prior to presentation in order to create a derivative media presentation.

2. The system of claim 1, the original media asset includes at least one of speech, text, video content, or music content.

3. The system of claim 1, the special metadata is embedded in the original media asset by a production crew or a content author of the original media asset.

4. The system of claim 1, the special metadata describes segment information associated with a portion of the original media asset, the segment information includes at least one of genre, topic, or category of the portion and further includes at least one of a time stamp or an index number for the portion.

5. The system of claim 1, the command is at least one of an instruction to skip a segment of the original media asset, or an instruction to overlay, replace, supplement, or interpolate the output of all or a portion of the original media asset with a second original media asset or with additional content.

6. The system of claim 1, the command is an instruction to query an existence of a local copy of the original media asset or to ascertain rights of use or access to the original media asset.

7. The system of claim 1, the synch file includes timing information associated with the metadata or the special metadata included in the original media asset in order to synchronize the presentation transformation action included in the command with the output of the original media asset.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising a personalization component that receives a user profile and automatically tailors the synch file based upon the user profile.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a propagation component that transmits the derivative media presentation in a machine-readable format.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a service component that is communicatively coupled to a computer-based network, the service component stores the original media asset and/or the synch file.

11. The system of claim 10, the service component facilitates access to the original media asset and/or to the synch file on a subscription basis.

12. The system of claim 10, the service component allocates profits from access fees to a copyright owner or to a content author.

13. A system that utilizes a synch file to facilitate consumption of a derivative media presentation based upon an original media asset, comprising:

a transform component that receives a synch file associated with an original media asset and that interprets a command included in the synch file; and

a media player component that reads the original media asset in order to present an audio/visual output of the original media asset and that outputs a derivative media presentation based upon the original media asset and the synch file.

14. The system of claim 13, the command defines a presentation transformation action to be performed upon the audio/visual output of the original media asset prior to presentation in order to create a derivative media presentation.

15. The system of claim 13, the command is an instruction to at least one of skip or replay a segment of the original media asset, pause the original media asset, call an application, call a presentation of an advertisement or other information, or to overlay, replace, supplement, or interpolate the output of the original media asset at a particular time with content included in the synch file.

16. The system of claim 13, further comprising a profile component that transmits user preferences to at least one of a personalization component, a service component, or a composition component.

17. The system of claim 13, the media player component synchronizes content included in the original media asset with content included in the synch file.

18. A method for constructing a derivative media presentation based upon an original media asset without destructive editing or modification of the original media asset, comprising:

accessing an original media asset, the asset including at least one of metadata or special metadata;

providing a set of tools for at least one of content creation or content transformation;

receiving input to the set of tools;

associating the input with the original media asset based upon timing; and

composing a synch file based upon the timing, the synch file including a command describing the content creation or content transformation.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising at least one of the following acts:

inserting segment information into the original media asset as special metadata, the segment information relating to at least one of a time stamp, an index number, a genre, a topic, or a category of a portion of the asset;

composing the synch file further based upon a user profile;

providing access to at least one of the original media asset, the synch file, or a derivative media asset by way of a computer network;

collecting a fee for the act of providing access;

or

distributing a portion of the fee to a copyright holder.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising at least one of the following acts:

initiating a presentation of the original media asset;

interpolating the presentation with the synch file for facilitating a derivative media experience;

synchronizing a command in the synch file with the presentation of the original media asset;

utilizing the command for at least one of skipping or replaying a segment of the original media asset, pausing the original media asset, calling an application, calling a presentation of an advertisement or other information, or for overlaying, replacing, supplementing, or interpolating the output of the original media asset with content included in the synch file at a designated time;

or

transmitting a user profile for facilitating the acts of composing.
