Abstract

A method is provided to control access to a femto cell. The method includes configuring one or more time-dependent parameters that specify access to a femto cell service. An access control list is employed for the femto cell service, where the access control list utilizes the time-dependent parameters to enable or deny access to the femto cell service. Access is granted to the femto cell service according to the access control list and the time-dependent parameters.

Claims

1. A method to control access to a femto cell, comprising:

employing a processor to control access to the femto cell, comprising;

configuring one or more time dependent parameters that specify access to a femto cell service;

employing an access control list for the femto cell service, the access control list utilizes the time-dependent parameters to enable or deny access to the femto cell service; and

granting access to femto cell service according to the access control list and the time-dependent parameters.

2. The method of claim 1, the access control list is a white list adapted with the time dependent parameters to control access to the femto cell service.

3. The method of claim 1, the time dependant parameters specify a explicit value of time, an implicit value of time, or an implicit value of time.

4. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify a calendar period of time.

5. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify a user identifier.

6. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify a time related event, the event including an emergency period, a routine period, or a maintenance period.

7. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify an access type that specifies a permanent or temporary period of time.

8. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify a modality type that includes voice, e-mail, text, or electronic codes.

9. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify an application type.

10. The method of claim 1, the time dependent parameters specify a constraint that limits access to a femto cell service.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising dynamically adjusting the time-dependent parameters by monitoring the femto cell service.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising setting one or more predetermined thresholds which are compared against actual system usage to dynamically adjust time dependent parameters.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising automatically observing system usage over time and setting a time parameter based upon the observed usage.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising monitoring femto cell access in view of rules or policies that define an initial usage pattern and adjusting the time dependent parameters over time based on actual femto cell access.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising monitoring femto cell access in view of one or more statistics and adjusting the time dependent parameters based on actual usage statistics gathered over time.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising employing one or more classifiers to learn system behavior over time.

17. A system to control access to a femto cell, comprising:

a white list to control access to the femto cell;

at least one time parameter that defines a usage criteria for the white list; and

a processor that employs the white list to enable or disable the access to the femto cell.

18. The system of claim 17, the time parameter includes at least one of a time component, a calendar component, an identification component, an event component, an access type component, a modality component, an application type component, and a constraint component.

19. The system of claim 17, further comprising a dynamic adjustment component to automatically adjust the time parameter over time and an interface device to access the femto cell.

20. A femto cell apparatus, comprising:

means for processing an access control list for a femto cell;

means for analyzing one or more time dependent parameters in accordance with the access control list; and

means for dynamically adjusting the time dependent parameters as femto cell data is collected over time.
