Abstract

An insertion device, generally used with an infusion set, including a needle being adapted for puncturing at one end and including at the opposite end a hub. The hub includes a handle part and a guard part that are capable of securing the needle through the use of locks. Locking structures are used to secure the insertion device in a position where the needle is covered in a locked position, avoiding unintended contact with the needle.

Claims

1. An insertion set, comprising:

a cannula housing of an infusion set including a cannula adapted to be inserted into the skin of a patient; and

an insertion device including;

a hub removably attachable to a base of the cannula housing of the infusion set, including a handle part and a guard part;

a needle attached to the hub, wherein the guard part is adapted to cover the needle; and

a collapse part attached to the handle part.

2. The insertion set of claim 1, wherein the insertion device further includes locks adapted to secure the needle in the guard part when the needle is covered by the guard part.

3. The insertion set of claim 1, wherein the needle is adapted to extend through the cannula of the cannula housing and beyond an outer tip thereof when the insertion device is attached to the cannula housing.

4. The insertion set of claim 1, wherein the guard part includes a needle recess to house the needle.

5. The insertion set of claim 1, wherein the collapse part is on the hub opposite to the guard part and includes opposing walls that are biased to improve wall collapse when pressure is applied.

6. The insertion set of claim 5, wherein the hub includes an inner side and the collapse part is connected to a push block inside the hub.

7. The insertion set of claim 6, wherein the collapse part is capable of flexing inwards towards the needle and into the push block, and wherein the push block is moved into the needle to bend the needle up into a needle recess of the guard part.

8. The insertion set of claim 1, wherein the collapse part is composed of material that flexes without fracturing.

9. The insertion set of claim 2, wherein the locks are catches positioned inside the hub on opposite sides that lock when pushed together.

10. The insertion set of claim 9, wherein the collapse part includes opposing walls, and wherein the catches lock together when said walls are collapsed in.

11. The insertion set of claim 10, wherein the catches lock the needle within the guard part.

12. An insertion device, comprising:

a hub removably attachable to a base of a cannula housing of an infusion set, including a handle part and a guard part;

a needle attached to the hub, wherein the guard part is adapted to cover the needle; and

a collapse part attached to the handle part.

13. The insertion device of claim 12, further including locks adapted to secure the needle in the guard part when the needle is covered by the guard part.

14. The insertion device of claim 12, wherein the needle is adapted to extend through a cannula of the cannula housing and beyond an outer tip thereof when the insertion device is attached to the cannula housing.

15. The insertion device of claim 12, wherein the guard part includes a needle recess to house the needle.

16. The insertion device of claim 12, wherein the collapse part is on the hub opposite to the guard part and includes opposing walls that are biased to improve wall collapse when pressure is applied.

17. The insertion device of claim 16, wherein the hub includes an inner side and the collapse part is connected to a push block inside the hub.

18. The insertion device of claim 17, wherein the collapse part is capable of flexing inwards towards the needle and into the push block, and wherein the push block is moved into the needle to bend the needle up into a needle recess of the guard part.

19. The insertion device of claim 12, wherein the collapse part is composed of material that flexes without fracturing.

20. The insertion device of claim 13, wherein the locks are catches positioned inside the hub on opposite sides that lock when pushed together.

21. The insertion device of claim 20, wherein the collapse part includes opposing walls, and wherein the catches lock together when said walls are collapsed in.

22. The insertion device of claim 21, wherein the catches lock the needle within the guard part.

23. A method for covering an insertion needle, comprising:

inserting a cannula into the skin of a patient with an insertion device, wherein the insertion device includes;

a hub removably attachable to a base of a cannula housing of an infusion set, including a handle part and a guard part;

a needle attached to the hub, wherein the guard part is adapted to cover the needle; and

a collapse part attached to the handle part;

removing the insertion device from the cannula housing; and

covering the needle of the insertion device with the guard part.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the insertion device further includes locks adapted to secure the needle in the guard part when the needle is covered by the guard part.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the needle is locked within the guard part before disposing of the insertion device.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein the needle is adapted to extend through the cannula of the cannula housing and beyond an outer tip thereof when the insertion device is attached to the cannula housing.

27. The method of claim 23, wherein the guard part includes a needle recess to house the needle.

28. The method of claim 23, wherein the collapse part is on the hub opposite to the guard part and includes opposing walls that are biased to improve wall collapse when pressure is applied.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the hub includes an inner side and the collapse part is connected to a push block inside the hub.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the collapse part is capable of flexing inwards towards the needle and into the push block, and wherein the push block is moved into the needle to bend the needle up into a needle recess of the guard part.

31. The method of claim 23, wherein the collapse part is composed of material that flexes without fracturing.

32. The method of claim 24, wherein the locks are catches positioned inside the hub on opposite sides that lock when pushed together.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the collapse part includes opposing walls, and wherein the catches lock together when said walls are collapsed in.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the catches lock the needle within the guard part.
