Abstract

A targeted-content-message-related profile for use with wireless access terminals (W-ATs) may be generated by one or more usage-related rules on the W-AT itself. The usage generate rules may be used by the W-AT to generate a user profile, with the usage-related rule providing a dynamic property to the user profile. All or part of the user profile may then be used as a targeted-content-message-related profile for targeting content messages.

Claims

1. A method of generating a targeted-content-message-related profile, the method comprising:

using a usage-related rule on a wireless access terminal (W-AT) to generate a user profile, the usage-related rule providing a dynamic property to the user profile; and

using all or part of the user profile as the targeted-content-message-related profile.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a new rule; and

storing the new rule in the W-AT.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a new rule; and

modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the rules to generate the targeted-content-message-related profile in response to a set of basic rules.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the set of basic rules include one or more rules in response to pre-scheduled events.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the set of rules to generate the targeted-content-message-related profile in response to basic rules and qualified rules.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the basic rules include pre-scheduled events, and wherein the qualified rules include at least one of a condition and event.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein at least one condition relates to at least one of physical status information and operational status information so as to use the condition for activating the pre-scheduled event.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a new rule provided as a qualified rule; and

modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a new rule provided as a qualified rule, wherein the conditional aspect includes an amount of usage; and

modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using physical state information, including location information, in the generation of the profile.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

using physical state information, including location information, and at least one other event in the generation of the profile.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

using physical state information, including location information and at least one time-related event in the generation of the profile.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the rules to generate the targeted-content-message-related profile in response to at least one qualified rule, the qualified rule including a condition detected by the W-AT and corresponding to actions by the user, and including a detection of location.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

acquiring a correspondence between the detection of location and demographic data.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using at least one rule controlled by a physical configuration of the W-AT so as to utilize W-AT information to tailor content display in a manner suited for the W-AT.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein content is configured according to menu layout, including menu layout factors selected from linear, hierarchical, animated, popup and softkey menu options.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the targeted-content-message-related profile to provide processing of data on the user'"'"'s equipment to provide an association of advertisements and other media with information in the user profile, but without using individually identifiable customer information for that purpose on the W-AT or the subscriber network, and without disclosing individually identifiable customer information to third parties.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the targeted-content-message-related profile as a selection criterion for providing at least one targeted-content-message in the form of an advertisement message.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the targeted-content-message-related profile as a selection criterion for providing at least one targeted-content-message in the form of an advertisement message; and

using the targeted-content-message-related profile to provide processing of data to provide an association of advertisements and other media with information in the user profile, but without using individually identifiable customer information for that purpose on the subscriber network, and without disclosing individually identifiable customer information to predetermined third parties.

21. A wireless access terminal (W-AT) comprising:

first processing circuitry configured to generate a user profile by using a usage-related rule so as to provide a dynamic property to the user profile;

second circuitry configured to use the user profile as a targeted-content-message-related profile; and

third circuitry configured to receive instructions for providing said usage-related rule and supplying the usage-related rule to the circuit module capable of generating a user profile, thereby causing the circuit module capable of generating a user profile to modify the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

22. The W-AT of claim 21, wherein the first processing circuitry is configured

to generate a user profile using both at least one basic rule and one qualified rule.

23. The W-AT of claim 22, wherein the first processing circuitry is configured

to generate a user profile using physical state information.

24. The W-AT of claim 21, wherein the first processing circuitry is configured

to generate a user profile using at least one of location and demographic data.

25. The W-AT of claim 21, wherein the first processing circuitry is configured

to generate a user profile based on the physical configuration of the W-AT.

26. A wireless access terminal (W-AT) capable of generating a targeted-content-message-related profile, the W-AT comprising:

means for receiving instructions for providing a usage-related rule;

means for using the usage-related rule to generate a user profile, the usage-related rule providing a dynamic property to the user profile;

means for using all or part of the user profile as the targeted-content-message-related profile;

means for receiving a new rule; and

means for modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

27. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using the rules to generate the targeted-content-message-related profile in response to basic rules, including in response to pre-scheduled events.

28. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using the rules to generate the targeted-content-message-related profile in response to basic rules and qualified rules, wherein the basic rules include pre-scheduled events and the qualified rules include at least one condition and event wherein a condition relates to at least one of physical status information and operational status information so as to use the condition for activating the pre-scheduled event.

29. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for receiving the new rule provided as a qualified rule; and

means for modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

30. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using physical state information including location information in the generation of the profile.

31. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using physical state information including location information and at least one other event in the generation of the profile.

32. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using physical state information including location information and at least one time-related event in the generation of the profile.

33. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using the rules to generate the targeted-content-message-related profile in response to at least one qualified rule, the qualified rule including a condition detected by the W-AT and corresponding to actions by the user, and including a detection of location; and

means for acquiring a correspondence between the detection of location and demographic data.

34. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for providing at least one rule controlled by the configuration so as to utilize W-AT information to tailor the content in a manner suited for the W-AT.

35. The W-AT of claim 26, further comprising:

means for using the targeted-content-message-related profile to provide processing of data based on the physical configuration of the W-AT to provide an association of advertisements and other media with information in the user profile, but without using individually identifiable customer information for that purpose on the W-AT or the subscriber network, and without disclosing individually identifiable customer information to predetermined third parties.

36. A computer program product, comprising:

a computer-readable medium comprising;

a first instruction for receiving instructions for providing a usage-related rule at a W-AT;

a second instruction for causing a computer to use a usage-related rule on a wireless access terminal (W-AT) to generate a user profile, the usage-related rule providing a dynamic property to the user profile;

a third instruction for causing the computer to use the user profile as the targeted-content-message-related profile; and

a fourth instruction for modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.

37. The computer program product of claim 36, further comprising:

a fifth instruction for using the modified profile as modified by the instruction for modifying the profile as a selection criterion for providing at least one targeted-content-message in the form of an advertisement message.

38. A chipset including at least one semiconductor integrated circuit chip, for use in a wireless communication device (WCD), the chipset comprising:

a circuit capable of receiving instructions for providing a usage-related rule;

a circuit capable of using the usage-related rule to generate a user profile, the usage-related rule providing a dynamic property to the user profile;

a circuit capable of using the user profile as the targeted-content-message-related profile;

a circuit capable of receiving a new rule; and

a circuit capable of modifying the profile in accordance with the received new rule.
