Abstract

A method and apparatus are used in cooperative relays with incremental redundancy (IR) and distributed spatial multiplexing. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may listen to the base station (BS) transmission during Phase 1 of the communication, and use cooperation between a relay station (RS) and the BS for the data transmission during Phase 2 to improve performance. During Phase 2, both the BS and the RS may transmit data to the WTRU, using either distributed Space Time Block Codes/Space Frequency Block Codes (STBC/SFBC) or distributed spatial multiplexing.

Claims

1. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a plurality of transmissions, each of the transmissions in a first phase and a second phase, wherein each transmission contains bits coded with different redundancy versions (RVs);

a processor configured to process the bits;

an incremental redundancy (IR) buffer configured to combine the bits; and

a decoder configured to decode the combined bits.

2. The WTRU of claim 1, wherein the receiver is configured to receive a first transmission from a base station (BS) in the first phase, a second transmission from the BS in the second phase, and a third transmission from a relay station (RS) in the second phase.

3. The WTRU of claim 2, wherein the receiver is configured to receive the first transmission coded with a first RV, the second transmission coded with a second RV, and the third transmission is coded with a third RV.

4. The WTRU of claim 1 further comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit channel quality index (CQI) feedback to the BS and the RS in the second phase.

5. The WTRU of claim 1, wherein the receiver is configured to separate the bits based on the RV.

6. The WTRU of claim 1, wherein the receiver is configured to receive bits in the second phase that are partitioned into systematic bits and a plurality of parity bits.

7. The WTRU of claim 6, wherein the receiver is configured to receive a plurality of parity bits that is assigned a higher priority based on the RV.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the receiver is configured to receive a plurality of systematic bits that is assigned a higher priority based on the RV.

9. A wireless communications method for a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising:

receiving a plurality of transmissions, each of the transmissions in a first phase and a second phase, wherein each transmission contains bits coded with different redundancy versions (RVs);

processing the bits;

combining the bits; and

decoding the combined bits.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein a first transmission is received from a base station (BS) in the first phase, a second transmission is received from the BS in the second phase, and a third transmission is received from a relay station (RS) in the second phase.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the first transmission is coded with a first RV, the second transmission is coded with a second RV, and the third transmission is coded with a third RV.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the first RV is equal to the second RV.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the second RV is equal to the third RV with distributed space time block coding (STBC) or space frequency block coding (SFBC) modulation.

14. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

transmitting channel quality index (CQI) feedback to the BS and the RS in the second phase.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the receiving includes separating the bits based on the RV.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein the bits received in the second phase are partitioned into systematic bits and a plurality of parity bits.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the plurality of parity bits is assigned a higher priority based on the RV.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the plurality of systematic bits is assigned a higher priority based on the RV.
