Abstract

A lead delivery apparatus and a method of delivering a medical lead to an anatomic target site. An elongated lead advancement member is coupled to a delivery shaft. The delivery shaft is inserted to the target site. The delivery shaft is temporarily attached to the target site using a fixator. A medical lead is inserted over the lead advancement member and pushed over the lead advancement member toward the target site.

Claims

1. A method of delivering a medical lead to an anatomic target site, the method comprising:

coupling an elongated lead advancement member to a delivery shaft;

inserting the delivery shaft to the target site;

attaching temporarily the delivery shaft to the target site using a fixator;

inserting a medical lead over the lead advancement member; and

pushing the medical lead over the lead advancement member toward the target site.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein inserting a medical lead over the lead advancement member includes passing the lead advancement member through a longitudinal lumen of the medical lead.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising tensioning the lead advancement member, wherein the lead advancement member is flexible.

4. A method of delivering a medical lead to an anatomic target site, the method comprising:

inserting the delivery shaft to the target site;

coupling a medical lead to an elongated lead advancement member;

slidably coupling the lead advancement member to the delivery shaft;

attaching the delivery shaft to the target site using a temporary fixator;

pushing the elongated lead advancement member along the delivery shaft toward the target site; and

advancing the medical lead toward the target site.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein coupling a medical lead to an elongated lead advancement member includes coupling a flexible member between a distal end of the medical lead and the lead advancement member.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein slidably coupling the lead advancement member to a delivery shaft includes sliding a ring over the delivery shaft, and coupling the ring to the a distal end of the lead advancement member.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the ring is monolithically attached to the lead advancement member.

8. The method of claim 4, wherein coupling a medical lead to an elongated lead advancement member includes passing a flexible member through a longitudinal lumen of the lead and coupling a distal end of the flexible member to the lead advancement member.

9. The method of claim 4, wherein slidably coupling the lead advancement member to a delivery shaft includes slidably inserting the lead advancement member into an internal delivery lumen of the of the delivery shaft.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising coupling a flexible member between a distal end of the medical lead and the lead advancement member through an external longitudinal slot of the delivery shaft, the external longitudinal slot communicating with the delivery lumen.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

coupling a flexible member between a distal end of the medical lead and an external ring surrounding the lead delivery shaft; and

magnetically coupling the external ring with the lead advancement member.

12. A method of delivering a medical lead to an anatomic target site, the method comprising:

inserting a lead advancement member into a delivery lumen of a delivery shaft, the delivery shaft insertable to the target site;

threadably coupling the lead advancement member to a nut, the nut slidably and non-rotatably received in the delivery lumen;

coupling a medical lead to the nut;

rotating the lead advancement member;

advancing the nut toward the target site; and

advancing the medical lead toward the target site.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein coupling a medical lead to the nut comprises connecting a flexible member between the medical lead and a tab of the nut, the tab protruding through a longitudinal slot of the delivery shaft, the longitudinal slot communicating with the delivery lumen.

14. A lead delivery device comprising:

a medical lead;

an elongated delivery shaft insertable to an anatomic target site of a patient;

an elongated lead advancement member coupled to a ring, the ring slidably surrounding the delivery shaft, the lead advancement member disposed outside the shaft; and

a flexible member outside the delivery shaft, the flexible member coupling the medical lead to the ring, such that pushing the lead advancement member toward the target site advances the medical lead toward the target site.

15. The lead delivery device of claim 14, wherein the delivery shaft includes a longitudinal fixator lumen for deploying a temporary fixator coupled to a distal end of the delivery shaft.

16. A lead delivery device comprising:

a medical lead;

an elongated delivery shaft insertable to an anatomic target site of a patient;

an elongated lead advancement member slidably received into a delivery lumen of the delivery shaft; and

a flexible member coupling the medical lead to the delivery shaft such that pushing the lead advancement member toward the target site advances the medical lead toward the target site.

17. The lead delivery device of claim 16, wherein the delivery shaft includes a longitudinal slot communicating with the delivery lumen, the flexible member coupled to the delivery advancement member through the longitudinal slot.

18. The lead delivery device of claim 16, further comprising an external ring slidably surrounding the delivery shaft, the flexible member coupled to the ring outside the delivery shaft and the ring magnetically coupled to the lead advancement member.

19. The lead delivery device of claim 16, wherein the delivery shaft includes a longitudinal fixator lumen for deploying a temporary fixator coupled to a distal end of the delivery shaft.

20. A lead delivery device comprising:

a medical lead;

an elongated delivery shaft insertable to an anatomic target site of a patient, the delivery shaft having a longitudinal delivery lumen communicating with an open longitudinal slot of the delivery shaft;

an internally threaded nut, the nut including an external tab, the nut slidably received in the delivery lumen and the tab slidably received in the longitudinal slot;

an elongated lead advancement member threadably engaging the nut through the delivery lumen of the delivery shaft; and

a flexible member coupling the medical lead to tab such that rotating the lead advancement member advances the nut and the medical lead toward the target site.

21. The lead delivery device of claim 20, wherein the delivery shaft includes a longitudinal fixator lumen for deploying a temporary fixator coupled to a distal end of the delivery shaft.

22. A lead delivery device comprising:

a delivery shaft having a longitudinal lumen and a temporary fixator;

a lead advancement member having a distal end;

a connector coupling the distal end of the lead advancement member to the delivery shaft; and

a medical lead coupled to the lead advancement member.

23. The lead delivery device of claim 22, wherein the lead advancement member comprises a flexible member passing through a longitudinal lumen of the medical lead, the flexible member having a stiffness allowing the medical lead to be pushed over the flexible member to the target site when the flexible member is in tension.

24. The lead delivery device of claim 22, wherein the connector includes a pin at a distal end of the flexible member, the pin removably received in a keyhole slot of the delivery shaft.
