Abstract

A rotor for an electric machine may include a rotor hub, a plurality of permanent magnets disposed about the rotor hub, a first sleeve circumjacent the plurality of permanent magnets, and a second sleeve. The second sleeve may be formed from a metal tape wrapped over the first sleeve. The second sleeve may be bonded to first and second end rings disposed at adjacent ends of the rotor hub. The metal tape may be applied in tension and may wrapped to form butt laps over the first sleeve. The metal tape may be corrosion resistant. Further, the second sleeve formed from the metal tape may protect the rotor from erosion and abrasion from fluid passing over the rotor.

Claims

1. A rotor for an electric machine comprising:

a rotor hub;

a plurality of permanent magnets disposed about the rotor hub;

a first sleeve circumjacent the plurality of permanent magnets; and

a second sleeve comprising a metal tape substantially helically wrapped over the first sleeve.

2. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the wrapped metal tape forms butt laps over an outer surface of the first sleeve.

3. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the first sleeve is a non-metallic sleeve.

4. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the first sleeve is formed from a fiber and resin composite material.

5. The rotor of claim 1 further comprising first and second end rings disposed adjacent to opposing ends of the rotor hub, wherein a first end of the metal tape is bonded to the first end ring and a second end of the metal tape is bonded to the second end ring.

6. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the metal tape is applied under tension.

7. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the second sleeve is cylindrical.

8. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the metal tape is treated with a nonconductive surface treatment.

9. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the second sleeve axial extends beyond opposing edges of the first sleeve.

10. The rotor of claim 1, wherein the metal tape is non-magnetic.

11. A method of forming a rotor for an electric machine comprising:

forming a first sleeve surrounding a plurality of permanent magnets disposed about a rotor hub; and

wrapping a metal tape around the first sleeve to form a second sleeve.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

applying a first end ring to a first end of the rotor hub and a second end ring to a second end of the rotor hub, and wherein wrapping a metal tape around the first sleeve to form a second sleeve comprises;

bonding a first end of the metal tape to the first end ring;

placing the metal tape under tension while wrapping the metal tape around the first sleeve; and

bonding a second end of the metal tape to the second end ring.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein wrapping a metal tape around the first sleeve to form a second sleeve comprises wrapping the metal tape in butt laps over the first sleeve.

14. The method of claim 11 further comprising forming a nonconductive treatment on the metal tape.

15. The method of claim 11 further comprising trimming the metal tape flush with outer surfaces of the first end plate and the second end plate.

16. An electric machine comprising:

a rotor comprising;

a rotor hub;

a plurality of permanent magnets disposed about the rotor hub;

a first sleeve circumjacent the plurality of permanent magnets; and

a second sleeve comprising a metal tape wrapped over the first sleeve.

17. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the wrapped metal tape forms butt laps over an outer surface of the first sleeve.

18. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the first sleeve is a non-metallic sleeve.

19. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the first sleeve is comprises a fiber and resin composite material.

20. The electric machine of claim 16 further comprising first and second end rings disposed adjacent to opposing ends of the rotor hub, wherein a first end of the metal tape is bonded to the first end ring and a second end of the metal tape is bonded to the second end ring.

21. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the metal tape is applied under tension.

22. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the second sleeve is cylindrical.

23. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the metal tape is coated with a nonconductive surface treatment.

24. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the second sleeve axial extends beyond opposing edges of the first sleeve.

25. The electric machine of claim 16, wherein the metal tape is non-magnetic.
