Abstract

An adaptive vehicle control system that classifies a driver'"'"'s driving style based on characteristic maneuvers and road and traffic conditions. The system includes a plurality of vehicle sensors that detect various vehicle parameters. A maneuver identification processor receives the sensor signals to identify a characteristic maneuver of the vehicle and provides a maneuver identifier signal of the maneuver. The system also includes a traffic condition recognition processor that receives the sensor signals, and provides traffic condition signals identifying traffic conditions. A style characterization processor receives the maneuver identifier signals, sensor signals from the vehicle sensors and the traffic condition signals, and classifies driving style based on the signals to classify the style of the driver driving the vehicle.

Claims

1. A system for classifying a drivers driving style of a vehicle, said system comprising:

a plurality of vehicle sensors providing sensor measurement signals;

a traffic condition recognition processor responsive to the sensor signals, said traffic condition recognition processor providing traffic condition signals identifying traffic conditions; and

a style characterization processor responsive to maneuver identifier signals, the sensor measurement signals and the traffic condition signals, said style characterization processor classifying driving style based on the signals and providing driver style classification signals that identify the type of driver driving the vehicle.

The system according to claim 1 further comprising a vehicle position processor responsive to the sensor signals and location signals, said vehicle position processor outputting vehicle position signals to the traffic condition recognition processor to incorporate vehicle position in the traffic condition signals.

3. The system according to claim 2 wherein the vehicle position processor receives information about vehicle position from a global positioning system and/or an electronic digital map.

4. The system according to claim 1 further comprising a surround sensing processor providing surround fusion signals to the traffic condition recognition processor so as to enhance the traffic condition signals.

5. The system according to claim 1 further comprising a vehicle-to-infrastructure/vehicle communications system providing communications signals to the traffic condition recognition processor so as to enhance the traffic condition signals.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein the traffic condition processor generates the traffic condition signals based on the number of lanes in the roadway, the number of vehicle tracks being monitored, the range from the vehicle to a preceding vehicle and the speed of the vehicle.

7. The system according to claim 6 wherein the traffic condition processor further generates the traffic condition signals based on a trailing vehicle.

8. The system according to claim 1 wherein the traffic condition processor generates the traffic condition signals based on the average distance between the vehicle and surrounding vehicles.

9. The system according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of vehicle sensors includes radar, said traffic condition recognition processor using radar measurements from the radar to establish and maintain tracks of moving objects around the vehicle for providing the traffic condition signals.

10. The system according to claim 1 wherein the traffic recognition processor employs a digital global positioning system with inter-vehicle communications to detect vehicles surrounding the vehicle and the speed of the surrounding vehicles.

11. The system according to claim 1 wherein the traffic recognition processor uses signals that detect vehicle gaps between the vehicle and surrounding vehicles to generate the traffic condition signals.

12. The system according to claim 1 wherein the traffic recognition processor uses vehicle-to-vehicle communications and GPS locations to determine the traffic condition signals.

13. The system according to claim 1 wherein the traffic condition processor uses signals that identify the geographic location of the vehicle to help generate the traffic condition signals.

14. A system for providing traffic condition information in a subject vehicle, said system comprising:

a sensor for providing a sensor speed signal of the speed of the vehicle;

a sensor for providing range and range rate sensor signals from the subject vehicle to a preceding vehicle;

one or more sensors for providing sensor signals identifying the position of the subject vehicle and surrounding vehicles; and

a traffic condition recognition processor responsive to the sensor signals from the sensors and processing the signals to provide the traffic condition information.

The system according to claim 14 further comprising a vehicle position processor responsive to the sensor signals, said vehicle position processor outputting vehicle position signals to the traffic condition recognition processor to incorporate vehicle position in the traffic condition information.

16. The system according to claim 15 wherein the vehicle position processor receives information about vehicle position from a global positioning system and/or an electronic digital map.

17. The system according to claim 14 further comprising a surround sensing processor providing surround fusion sensor signals to the traffic condition recognition processor.

18. The system according to claim 14 further comprising a vehicle-to-infrastructure/vehicle communications system providing communications signals to the traffic condition recognition processor so as to enhance the traffic condition information.

19. The system according to claim 14 wherein at least one of the sensors is a radar, said traffic condition recognition processor using radar measurements from the radar to establish and maintain tracks of moving objects around the vehicle for providing the traffic condition signals.

20. A method for classifying a driver'"'"'s driving style of a vehicle, said method comprising:

providing a plurality of sensor measurement signals from a plurality of vehicle sensors;

providing a traffic condition signal identifying traffic conditions using the sensor measurement signals; and

classifying driving style based on the sensor signals and the traffic condition signals to identify the type of driver driving the vehicle.

The method according to claim 20 wherein providing the traffic condition signals includes providing the traffic condition signals based on the number of lanes in the roadway, the number of vehicle tracks being monitored, the range from the vehicle to a preceding vehicle and the speed of the vehicle.

22. The method according to claim 20 wherein providing the traffic condition signals includes looking at a trailing vehicle.

23. The method according to claim 20 wherein generating the traffic condition signals includes generating the traffic condition signals based on the average distance between the vehicle and surrounding vehicles.
