Abstract

A multi-piece iron-type golf club head with a substantial weight member is disclosed and claimed. The golf club head includes a plurality of body members. A first body member includes a face, a rear surface, and a hosel. A viscoelastic material is attached to the rear surface, and a second body member is attached to the viscoelastic material. The second body member, which may be a weight member, has a substantially larger mass than in known golf clubs. The viscoelastic member may form a substantial part of the club head. The club head may also have a recess located in a top portion thereof between the heel and the toe and extending toward the sole. A low-density insert may be positioned within the recess.

Claims

1. A golf club head, comprising:

a first body member comprising a face and a hosel and defining a rear surface having a concave profile extending from a heel of the club head to a toe of the club head;

a second body member coupled to the rear surface of the first body member; and

a third body member disposed between the first and second body members.

2. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the face is a separate body coupled to a front surface of the first body member.

3. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second body member comprises a hole, and wherein the third body member is visible through the hole.

4. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the third body member comprises a viscoelastic material.

5. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second body member forms at least a portion of a sole of the golf club head.

6. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the first body member forms at least a portion of a sole of the golf club head.

7. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second body member comprises a back surface having a recess therein, and wherein a fourth body member is coupled to and retained in the recess.

8. A golf club head comprising:

a first body member comprising a front surface and a rear surface, wherein the front surface comprises a face insert and wherein the rear surface has a concave profile extending from a heel of the club head to a toe of the club head;

a second body member coupled to the rear surface of the first body member, wherein the second body member comprises a recess in a back surface;

a third body member disposed between the first and second body members; and

a fourth body member retained within the recess in the second body member.

9. The golf club head of claim 8, wherein the second body member forms at least a portion of a sole of the golf club head.

10. The golf club head of claim 8, wherein the second body member forms a majority of a sole of the golf club head.

11. The golf club head of claim 8, wherein the third body member comprises a viscoelastic material.

12. The golf club head of claim 8, wherein the second body member is heavier than the first body member.
