Abstract

Techniques for facilitating the exchange of information and transactions between two entities associated with two wireless devices when the devices are in close proximity to each other. A first device uses a first short range wireless capability to detect an identifier transmitted from a second device in proximity, ideally using existing radio capabilities such as Bluetooth (IEEE802.15.1-2002) or Wi-Fi (IEEE802.11). The detected identifier, being associated with the device, is also associated with an entity. Rather than directly exchanging application data flow between the two devices using the short range wireless capability, a second wireless capability allows for one or more of the devices to communicate with a central server via the internet, and perform the exchange of application data flow. By using a central server to draw on stored information and content associated with the entities the server can broker the exchange of information between the entities and the devices.

Claims

1. A method for operating a first wireless communication device comprising:

receiving a wireless identifier from a second wireless device using a peer-to-peer protocol;

connecting to a server using a wireless protocol different from the peer-to-peer protocol;

sending the received wireless identifier to the server; and

receiving further information from the server, the further information associated with an entity or object associated with the second wireless device, wherein the further information additionally includes a visual identification of an object or entity associated with the second device.

2. The method of claim 1 additionally comprising:

notifying a user of the first wireless device of the proximity of the second wireless device.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

sending a message to the server, the message representing a request to forward a message to the first wireless device.

4. The method of claim 1 additionally comprising

sending a message to the server as part of a relationship brokering function coordinated by the server.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the server further performs the steps of:

coordinating with an application running at least one of the of the first and second wireless devices, to perform a point of sale transaction utilizing user input received from at least one of the first and second wireless devices;

performing one ore more confirmations of steps of the transaction; and

wherein at least one confirmation step additionally comprises;

sending a message to one of the first or second wireless devices to cause the application to display an identifying picture related to one of the devices.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein both the first and second devices perform at least one confirmation step.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the server further performs one or more of:

authorizing the transaction to a third party;

interacting with a point of sale application to associate an itemized list of items with a detected second device;

confirming with the application on the second device, thereby requiring user input that the bill of goods list is correct;

storing information related to a detected account identity of the second device; and

/or

storing information relating to inventory in a database.

8. A first wireless communication device comprising:

a peer receiver, for receiving a wireless identifier from a second wireless device using a peer-to-peer protocol;

a server transmitter, for sending the received wireless identifier to a server; and

a server receiver, for receiving further information from the server, the further information associated with an entity or object associated with the second wireless device, wherein the further information additionally includes a visual identification of an object or entity associated with the second device.

9. The device of claim 8 additionally comprising:

a display, for notifying a user of the first wireless device of the proximity of the second wireless device.

10. The device of claim 8 wherein the server transmitter further sends a message to the server representing a request to forward a message to the second wireless device.

11. The device of claim 8 wherein the server transmitter further sends a message to the server as part of a relationship brokering function coordinated by the server.

12. The device of claim 8 wherein the server has a processor configured to:

coordinate with an application running at least one of the of the first and second wireless devices, to perform a point of sale transaction utilizing user input received from at least one of the first and second wireless devices;

perform one ore more confirmations of steps of the transaction; and

a device transmitter, for sending a message to one of the first or second wireless devices to cause the application to display an identifying picture related to one of the devices.

13. The device of claim 12 wherein both the first and second devices perform at least one confirmation step.

14. The device of claim 13 wherein the processor in the server:

authorizes the transaction to a third party;

interacts with a point of sale application to associate an itemized list of items with a detected second device;

confirms with the application on the second device, thereby requiring user input that the bill of goods list is correct;

stores information related to a detected account identity of the second device; and

/or

stores information relating to inventory in a database.
