Abstract

There is provided a method for use by a media player to provide access to a media content. The method comprises receiving a request from a user for playing the media content, prompting a user for an authorization code, receiving the authorization code from the user, transmitting the authorization code to an authentication server over a network, receiving a valid authentication message from the authentication server over the network if the authorization code is confirmed to be valid, transmitting the valid authentication message to a content server over the network, retrieving the media content from the content server over the network, wherein the media content incorporates an identification information associating the media content with the user.

Claims

1. A method for use by a media player to provide access to a media content, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a user for playing the media content;

prompting a user for an authorization code;

receiving the authorization code from the user;

transmitting the authorization code to an authentication server over a network;

receiving a valid authentication message from the authentication server over the network if the authorization code is confirmed to be valid;

transmitting the valid authentication message to a content server over the network;

retrieving the media content from the content server over the network, wherein the media content incorporates an identification information associating the media content with the user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the identification information is a machine perceptible and human imperceptible watermark incorporated into the media content in accordance with the authorization code.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the identification information is a human perceptible watermark incorporated into the media content in accordance with the authorization code.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the watermark includes a human perceptible video overlay identifying a copyright owner of the media content and a name of the user associated with the authorization code.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the request from the user is initiated by inserting a disc into the media player.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

overlaying the identification information on the media content while playing the media content by the media player.

15. The media player of claim 8, wherein the request from the user is initiated by inserting a disc into the media player.

16. The media player of claim 8, wherein the processor is configured to overlay the identification information on the media content while playing the media content.

3. The method of claim 3, wherein the watermark is detectable with image processing.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the watermark comprises digital data encoded in predetermined locations at specific times in the media content.

9. A media player for providing access to a media content, the media player comprising a processor configured to:

receive a request from a user for playing the media content;

prompt a user for an authorization code;

receive the authorization code from the user;

transmit the authorization code to an authentication server over a network;

receive a valid authentication message from the authentication server over the network if the authorization code is confirmed to be valid;

transmit the valid authentication message to a content server over the network;

retrieve the media content from the content server over the network, wherein the media content incorporates an identification information associating the media content with the user.

10. The media player of claim 9, wherein the identification information is a machine perceptible and human imperceptible watermark incorporated into the media content in accordance with the authorization code.

11. The media player of claim 10, wherein the watermark is detectable with image processing.

12. The media player of claim 10, wherein the watermark comprises digital data encoded in predetermined locations at specific times in the media content.

13. The media player of claim 9, wherein the identification information is a human perceptible watermark incorporated into the media content in accordance with the authorization code.

14. The media player of claim 13, wherein the watermark includes a human perceptible video overlay identifying a copyright owner of the media content and a name of the user associated with the authorization code.

17. A computer readable medium embodying a program code for execution by a processor of a media player, the program code comprising:

code for receiving a request from a user for playing the media content;

code for prompting a user for an authorization code;

code for receiving the authorization code from the user;

code transmitting the authorization code to an authentication server over a network;

code for receiving a valid authentication message from the authentication server over the network if the authorization code is confirmed to be valid;

code for transmitting the valid authentication message to a content server over the network;

code for retrieving the media content from the content server over the network, wherein the media content incorporates an identification information associating the media content with the user.

18. The program code of claim 17, wherein the identification information is a machine perceptible and human imperceptible watermark incorporated into the media content in accordance with the authorization code.

19. The program code of claim 17, wherein the identification information is a human perceptible watermark incorporated into the media content in accordance with the authorization code.

20. The program code of claim 17, wherein the request from the user is initiated by inserting a disc into the media player.
