Abstract

A universal data management interface (UDMI) system includes a processing system generates a visual interface through which a user can access, manage, and manipulate data on plural different types of remote databases. The UDMI connects to multiple standard database management systems and to allow multiple users to access, manage, and manipulate data within each of the multiple standard database management systems. The UDMI also allows multiple virtual databases that reside in a single database to be available as a network service.

74. An apparatus comprising:

a processing system to execute instructions to;

generate a visual interface to manage data in a remote database; and

manage relations between multiple tables included in the remote database.

75. The apparatus of claim 74, wherein the instructions are further executable to manage relations for multiple types of remote databases.

76. The apparatus of claim 75, wherein said multiple types of remote databases each correspond to a database management language.

77. The apparatus of claim 75, wherein said multiple types of remote databases are individually compliant with one or more of:

an ORACLE system,

a MICROSOFT structured query language (MSSQL) server,

a SYBASE system,

an INFORMIX system,

a DB2-based system,

a dBASE-based system,

a standard query language (SQL)-based system,

a mini structured query language (mSQL)-based system, or

a MYSQL-based system.

78. The apparatus of claim 74, wherein the instructions are further executable to output the visual interface in a web browser.

79. The apparatus of claim 78, wherein the instructions are further executable to implement one or more markup languages to output the visual interface, the markup language selected from:

hypertext markup language (HTML), dynamic hypertext markup language (DHTML), standard generalized hypertext markup language (SGML), or extensible markup language (XML).

80. The apparatus of claim 74, wherein the instructions are further executable to synchronize with the remote database.

81. The apparatus of claim 74, wherein the instructions are further executable to contain table relations domains in a table relation file.

82. The apparatus of claim 81, wherein the table relations domains includes one domain for the table relation file.

83. The apparatus of claim 81, wherein the table relations domains is a set of column pairs, in which each column pair includes a member from an originate table and a member from a conclude table of said tables.

84. The apparatus of claim 81, wherein the instructions are further executable to specify an owner to which a set of relations belong.

85. The apparatus of claim 81, wherein the instructions are further executable to rewrite the table relation file each time a submit input is received.

86. The apparatus of claim 81, wherein the table relation file is independent of a management system for the remote database.

87. The apparatus of claim 81, wherein the instructions wherein the instructions are further executable to manipulate and access the data in the remote database.

88. An apparatus comprising:

a processing system to execute instructions to;

make multiple virtual databases available as a network service; and

manage relations between said virtual databases.

89. The apparatus of claim 88, wherein the instructions are further executable to maintain a table relation file independent of a management system for a database that contains said virtual databases.

90. The apparatus of claim 89, wherein the table relation file includes a set of column pairs, in which the set column pairs includes members from said virtual databases.

91. The apparatus of claim 88, wherein the instructions are further executable to synchronize with a database that contains said virtual databases.

92. The apparatus of claim 88, wherein the instructions are further executable to manipulate and access data in said virtual databases.

93. One or more computer-readable media comprising instructions that are executable by a computer to:

generate a visual interface in a web browser to manage data for one or more databases; and

manage relations between said databases with a table relation file separate from a management system for said databases, in which the table relation file includes a set of column pairs that includes a member from an origin table and a member from a conclude table that are contained in said databases.

94. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 93, wherein the instructions are further configured to rewrite the table relation file responsive to modification of the column pairs.

95. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 93, wherein said databases are virtualized databases.

96. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 93, wherein the instructions are further configured to access and manipulate data in said databases.

97. One or more computer-readable media comprising instructions that are executable by a computer to:

make one or more tables, included in a remote database, available as a network service; and

manage relations between said tables independent of management of the remote database.

98. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 97, wherein the instructions are further executable to maintain a table relation file to store relation data for said tables.

99. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 98, wherein the instructions are further executable to store a set of column pairs to manage relation between said tables, in which each set of column pairs includes a member from an origin said table and a member from a conclude said table.

100. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 97, wherein the instructions are further executable to rewrite a table relation file each time a modification is made to a particular said table.

101. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 97, wherein the remote database is virtualized.

102. One or more computer-readable media as described in claim 97, wherein the instructions are further executable to access and manipulate the data in said tables.

103. A method comprising:

managing data in one or more remote databases, each of which is also independently managed, wherein managing includes;

maintaining a table relation file that includes a set of column pairs that includes a member from an origin table and a member from a conclude table included in said remote databases; and

generating a visual interface to manipulate relations between the data in said remote databases.

104. The method of claim 103, further comprising implementing one or more markup languages to output the visual interface, the markup language selected from:

hypertext markup language (HTML), dynamic hypertext markup language (DHTML), standard generalized hypertext markup language (SGML), or extensible markup language (XML).

105. The method of claim 103, further comprising rewriting the table relation file when the data is modified.

106. The method of claim 103, wherein the table relation file is independent of a management system for said databases.

107. The method of claim 103, wherein the origin table and the conclude table are included in one said remote database.

108. The method of claim 103, further comprising accessing and manipulating the data in said remote databases.

109. A method comprising:

managing data in one or more remote databases, each of which is also separately managed, including;

maintaining a table relation file, independent of a management system for said databases, configured to include a set of column pairs from said remote databases.

110. The method of claim 109, wherein said remote databases each implement an individual database management language.

111. The method of claim 109, wherein managing further comprises rewriting the table relation file each time the data is modified in said remote databases.

112. The method of claim 109, further comprising accessing and manipulating the data in said remote databases.
