Abstract

A system, device and method are presented for utilizing stretchable active integrated circuits with inflatable bodies. The invention allows for such operative features to come into direct contact with body structures, such as the inner wall of a lumen. Such direct contact increases accuracy of measurement and delivery of therapy.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

an inflatable body having a surface; and

a stretchable electronic circuit comprising at least one discrete operative device being in electronic communication to at least one other discrete operative device,

wherein said stretchable electronic circuit is affixed to said inflatable body.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein said stretchable electronic circuit comprises a single crystalline semiconductor structure.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein said stretchable electronic circuit is printable.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein said stretchable electronic circuit is operable when said inflatable body is inflated.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein said inflatable body is inflated to up to 500 percent.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein said electronic communication is wireless.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein said device further comprises a transceiver receiving said data from said at least one discrete operative device.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein said electronic communication is a physical electrical connection.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein said electrical connection is stretchable.

10. The device of claim 8, wherein said electrical connection is configured to be buckled when said inflatable body is relaxed.

11. The device of claim 8, wherein said electrical connection is non-coplanar with said inflatable body when said inflatable body is relaxed.

12. The device of claim 8, wherein said electrical connection is coplanar with said inflatable body when said inflatable body is inflated.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one discrete operative device comprises an amplifier.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one discrete operative device comprises a semiconductor structure.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein said semi-conductor structure is a single crystalline semi-conductor structure.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one discrete operative device comprises a transducer.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one discrete operative device comprises at least one photodetector.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one discrete operative device comprises at least one of an ultrasound emitter.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one operative device comprises light emitting electronics.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein said light emitting electronics comprise an LED.

21. The device of claim 1, wherein said stretchable electronic circuit comprises light emitting electronics.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein said light emitting electronics comprises an LED.

23. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one discrete operative device is in electronic communication with a processor, said processor receiving data generated by said at least one operative device, said processor being programmed to generate data for an image related to a body lumen.

24. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one discrete operative device comprises a sensor.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor detects temperature data.

26. The device of claim 25, wherein said at least one discrete operative device is in electronic communication with a processor, said processor receiving data generated by said at least one operative device, said processor being programmed to generate a spatial temperature map of a lumen.

27. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor is a capacitance sensor.

28. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor detects data related to pressure.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein said sensor is a piezo-electric sensor.

30. The device of claim 28, wherein said sensor detects mechanical properties of a lumen.

31. The device of claim 28, wherein said sensor detects an initial contact diameter of a lumen.

32. The device of claim 28, wherein said at least one discrete operative device is in electronic communication with a processor, said processor receiving data generated by said at least one operative device, said processor being programmed to generate a tactile image map of a lumen.

33. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor detects data related to electrical conductivity.

34. The device of claim 33, wherein said data related to electrical conductivity is the conductivity of plaque inside of a lumen.

35. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor detects data related to pH.

36. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor detects data related to enzymatic activity.

37. The device of claim 24, wherein said sensor detects data related to chemical activity.

38. The device of claim 1, wherein at least one operative device comprises a sensor, said operative device continuously generates data.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein said continuously generated data is recorded.

40. The device of claim 1, wherein said inflatable body is made of a polymer.

41. The device of claim 1, wherein said inflatable body is a balloon.

42. The device of claim 1, wherein the inflatable body is fitted with a stent.

43. The device of claim 1, further comprising a drug delivery polymer comprising a drug.

44. The device of claim 43, wherein said stretchable electronic circuit activates said drug delivery polymer.

45. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one operative device is ultra thin.

46. A method to detect parameters inside of a lumen comprising the steps:

inserting an inflatable body into a lumen, said inflatable having a surface and a stretchable electronic circuit affixed thereto, said stretchable electronic circuit comprising at least one discrete operative device having an electrical connection to at least one other discrete operative device;

inflating the inflatable body;

contacting at least one of said operative devices to said lumen; and

measuring a parameter of said lumen.

47. The method of claim 46, further comprising the step of delivering a therapy based on said measurement.

48. The method of claim 46, further comprising generating graphical output based on said measured parameter.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the graphical output is a map of the lumen.

50. The method of claim 46, further comprising determining whether plaque inside the lumen is vulnerable.
