Abstract

A polyphasic multi-coil generator includes a driveshaft, at least first and second rotors rigidly mounted on the driveshaft so as to simultaneously synchronously rotate with rotation of the driveshaft, and at least one stator sandwiched between the first and second rotors. The stator has an aperture through which the driveshaft is rotatably journalled. A stator array on the stator has an equally circumferentially spaced-apart array of electrically conductive coils mounted to the stator in a first angular orientation about the driveshaft. The rotors and the stator lie in substantially parallel planes. The first and second rotors have, respectively, first and second rotor arrays.

70. A generator comprising:

a drive shaft;

a rotor rotatable by said drive shaft, said rotor comprising a first array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to a first side of said rotor;

a stator comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a first side of said stator, said stator comprising an aperture for receiving said drive shaft, said first side of said stator being adjacent to said first side of said rotor and said rotor and said stator being provided in substantially parallel planes, rotation of said rotor relative to said stator for inducing electrical current in said electrically conductive coils;

wherein one of said rotor and said stator is double-sided to comprise one of;

a second array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to a second side of said rotor and circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a second side of said stator.

71. A generator as claimed in claim 70, wherein each of said electrically conductive coils is spaced radially with respect to said magnets on said adjacent rotor, and is wrapped around a radial axis extending radially outward of said drive shaft to provide a radial flux rotor.

72. A generator as claimed in claim 70 wherein both said rotor and said stator are double-sided, said rotor comprising a second array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to said second side of said rotor, and said stator comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to said second side of said stator.

73. A generator as claimed in claim 72 wherein said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets is angularly offset in a drive shaft rotation direction from said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets, and wherein a drive shaft input force for rotating said rotor relative to said stator is reduced by magnetic forces that rotate said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets toward next electrically conductive coils on said first side of said stator in said drive shaft rotation direction.

74. A generator as claimed in claim 73, wherein each of said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets and said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets comprise pairs of magnets, each of said pairs of magnets including one magnet radially inner relative to said drive shaft and the other magnet radially outer relative to said drive shaft.

75. A generator as claimed in claim 74, wherein each of said pairs of magnets are aligned along a common radial axis extending radially outwardly from said drive shaft.

76. A generator as claimed in claim 74, wherein each of said pairs of magnets comprises one magnet and a ferromagnetic material.

77. A generator as claimed in claim 73, wherein said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets and said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets comprise single magnets, each of said single magnets comprising one pole radially inner relative to said drive shaft and the other pole radially outer relative to said drive shaft.

78. A generator as claimed in claim 73, wherein said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets is equally circumferentially spaced, and said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets is equally circumferentially spaced.

79. A generator as claimed in claim 73, wherein said circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils are equally circumferentially spaced on each side of said stator.

80. A generator as claimed in claim 73, wherein each of said electrically conductive coils is spaced radially with respect to said magnets on said adjacent rotor, and is wrapped around a radial axis extending radially outward of said drive shaft to provide a radial flux rotor.

81. A generator as claimed in claim 74, wherein each of said electrically conductive coils is wrapped around a radial axis extending radially outward of said drive shaft to provide a radial flux rotor.

82. A generator as claimed in claim 70, wherein said electrically conductive coils are selectively electrically energized between open and closed circuits.

83. A generator as claimed in claim 70, wherein said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets is selected from the group consisting of:

permanent magnets, electromagnets, hybrid magnets and a combination of at least two of;

permanent magnets, electromagnets and hybrid magnets.

84. A generator as claimed in claim 70, wherein said generator is operable as a motor.

85. A generator as claimed in claim 70, wherein said rotor is doubled-sided and comprises a second array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to said second side of said rotor, said second array of magnets being angularly offset in a drive shaft rotation direction from said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets, said generator, comprising:

a second stator comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a first side of said second stator, said second stator comprising an aperture for receiving said drive shaft, said first side of said second stator being adjacent to said second side of said rotor, said rotor, said stator and said second stator being provided in substantially parallel planes, rotation of said rotor relative to said stator and said second stator for inducing electrical current in said electrically conductive coils of said stator and said second stator;

wherein a drive shaft input force for rotating said rotor relative to said stator and said second stator is reduced by magnetic forces that rotate said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets toward next electrically conductive coils of said stator and said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets toward next electrically conductive coils of said second stator in said drive shaft rotation direction.

86. A generator as claimed in claim 85, wherein said electrically conductive coils coupled to said first side of said stator are at least in part co-planar with said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets, and said electrically conductive coils coupled to said first side of said second stator are at least in part co-planar with said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets.

87. A generator as claimed in claim 71, wherein said rotor is doubled-sided and comprises a second array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to said second side of said rotor, said generator comprising:

a second rotor, said second rotor is double-sided and comprises a first array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to a first side of said second rotor and a second array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to a second side of said second rotor; and

a second stator comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a first side of said second stator;

a third stator comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a first side of said third stator, said stator being provided between said rotor and said second rotor, and said rotor and said second rotor being provided between said second stator and said third stator.

88. A generator as claimed in claim 87, wherein said second rotor is angularly offset in a drive shaft rotation direction from said rotor, and wherein a drive shaft input force for rotating said rotor relative to said stator is reduced by magnetic forces that rotate said arrays of circumferentially spaced magnets toward next electrically conductive coils of adjacent stators in said drive shaft rotation direction.

89. A generator as claimed in claim 87, wherein said stator is double-sided comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to said second side of said stator.

90. A generator as claimed in claim 89, wherein said second stator and said third stator are located at ends of one stage of said generator.

91. A generator comprising:

a drive shaft;

a plurality of double-sided rotors rotatable by said drive shaft, said double-sided rotors each comprising a first array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to a first side thereof, and a second array of circumferentially spaced magnets coupled to a second side thereof, said second array of circumferentially spaced magnets angularly offset in a drive shaft rotation direction from said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets;

a plurality of double-sided stators interleaved between said double-sided rotors, said doubled-sided stators each comprising circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a first side thereof and circumferentially spaced electrically conductive coils coupled to a second side thereof, said stators further comprising an aperture for receiving said drive shaft, said rotors and said stators being provided in substantially parallel planes, rotation of said rotors relative to said stators for inducing electrical current in said electrically conductive coils;

wherein a drive shaft input force for rotating said rotor relative to said stator is reduced by magnetic forces that rotate said first array of circumferentially spaced magnets toward next electrically conductive coils of said adjacent stator in said drive shaft rotation direction.

92. A generator as claimed in claim 91, wherein each of said electrically conductive coils is spaced radially with respect to said magnets on adjacent rotors, and is wrapped around a radial axis extending radially outward of said drive shaft to provide a radial flux generator.

93. A generator as claimed in claim 91, wherein said electrically conductive coils are at least in part co-planar with said circumferentially spaced magnets.
