Abstract

A personal media broadcasting system enables video distribution over a computer network and allows a user to view and control media sources over a computer network from a remote location. A personal broadcaster receives an input from one or more types of media sources, digitizes and compresses the content, and streams the compressed media over a computer network to a media player running on any of a wide range of client devices for viewing the media. The system may allow the user to issue control commands (e.g., “channel up”) from the media player to the broadcaster, causing the source device to execute the commands. The broadcaster and the media player may employ several techniques for buffering, transmitting, and viewing the content to improve the user'"'"'s experience.

Claims

23. A method to play a media stream received over a network, the method comprising:

receiving the media stream;

storing the media stream in a buffer;

playing the media stream from the buffer;

receiving a user command to control content in the media stream; and

responsive to receiving the user command, entering a control mode in which the buffer is flushed.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the playing comprises initiating playback of the received media stream from the buffer after the buffer is flushed, wherein the playback is initiated at a decreased playback speed without waiting for the buffer to fill to a predetermined threshold.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the user command is an instruction to navigate a menu.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein the menu is displayed in the media stream.

27. The method of claim 23, wherein the user command is an instruction to change a channel associated with the media stream.

28. The method of claim 23 wherein the user command represents an instruction to change a channel associated with the media stream from a previous channel to a newly-selected channel, and wherein the method further comprises, after the buffer is flushed, rapidly playing back the content from the newly-selected channel at a decreased playback speed without waiting for the buffer to fill to the predetermined threshold.

29. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

reducing the bit rate of the media stream in response to the flushing of the buffer.

30. The method of claim 23, wherein the receiving of the media stream comprises receiving the media stream from a personal media broadcaster.

31. A computer program product for playing a media stream received over a network, the computer program product comprising a computer-readable medium containing computer program code for performing the method comprising:

receiving the media stream;

storing the media stream in a buffer;

playing the media stream from the buffer;

receiving a user command to control content in the media stream; and

responsive to receiving the user command, entering a control mode in which the buffer is flushed.

The computer program product of claim 31 wherein the playing comprises initiating playback of the received media stream from the buffer after the buffer is flushed, wherein the playback is initiated at a decreased playback speed without waiting for the buffer to fill to a predetermined threshold.

33. The computer program product of claim 31, wherein the user command is to navigate a menu displayed in the media stream.

34. The computer program product of claim 31, wherein the user command is to change a channel associated with the media stream.

35. The computer program product of claim 31, wherein the method further comprises:

reducing the bit rate of the media stream after the buffer is flushed.

37. The system of claim 35 wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the user command to the source via the network interface to adjust the content of the media stream received from the source.

38. The system of claim 37 wherein the processor is further configured to initially playback the adjusted media stream from the buffer at a decreased playback speed while the buffer fills to a predetermined threshold, and then to subsequently playback the received media stream at the normal rate after the buffer has filled to the pre-determined threshold.

39. The system of claim 35, wherein the buffer fills at a rate that is slower than the rate at which the media stream is received.

40. The system of claim 35 wherein the user command represents an instruction to change a programming channel in the media stream from a previous channel to a newly-selected channel, and wherein processor is further configured to flush the content of the previous channel from the buffer and to rapidly playback the content from the newly-selected channel at the decreased playback speed without waiting for the buffer to fill to the predetermined threshold.

41. The system of claim 35, wherein the user command represents navigation of a menu displayed in the media stream.

42. The system of claim 35 wherein the processor is further configured to initiate playback of the media stream from the buffer after the buffer is flushed, wherein the playback is initiated at a decreased playback speed without waiting for the buffer to fill to a predetermined threshold.

36. A system for playing a media stream for a user, wherein the media stream is received over a network from a source, the system comprising:

an interface configured to receive the media stream;

a buffer configured to store the media stream;

an input device configured to receive an input representing a user command to control the content of the media stream; and

a processor configured to receive the input and, in response to receiving the input, to enter a control mode in which the buffer is flushed.
