Abstract

A method and search engine for classifying a source publishing a document on a portion of a network, includes steps of electronically receiving a document, based on the document, determining a source which published the document, and assigning a code to the document based on whether data associated with the document published by the source matches with data contained in a database. An intelligent geographic- and business topic-specific resource discovery system facilitates local commerce on the World-Wide Web and also reduces search time by accurately isolating information for end-users. Distinguishing and classifying business pages on the Web by business categories using Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes is achieved through an automatic iterative process.

Claims

1. A method of indexing content on a network, the method comprising:

traversing the network to identify content associated with a uniform resource locator;

extracting geographic data from the content associated with the identified uniform resource locator without manual user intervention;

assigning a business category code to the uniform resource locator based on whether the extracted geographic data matches with data contained in a database; and

indexing the identified uniform resource locator and the assigned business category code in an electronic data store.

2. The method as in claim 1 further comprising indexing the associated geographic data with at least one of the identified uniform resource locator and the assigned business category code.

3. The method as in claim 1 wherein the electronic data store includes a searchable database.

4. The method as in claim 1 wherein extracting geographic data includes extracting a zip code from the content associated with the identified uniform resource locator.

5. The method as in claim 1 wherein extracting geographic data includes extracting local area exchange information from the content associated with the identified uniform resource locator.

6. The method as in claim 5 wherein extracting local area exchange information includes extracting an area code from the content associated with the identified uniform resource locator.

7. The method as in claim 1 wherein extracting geographic data includes extracting a city and a state from the content associated with the identified uniform resource locator.

8. The method as in claim 1 wherein extracting geographic data includes automatically extracting geographic data from the content associated with the identified uniform resource locator.

9. A method of indexing electronic content associated with a uniform resource locator on a network, the method comprising:

traversing a network to identify electronic content associated with a uniform resource locator;

accessing, over the network, the identified electronic content using the uniform resource locator;

extracting geographic data from the accessed electronic content without manual user intervention; and

indexing, in an electronic data store, the identified uniform resource locator based on the extracted geographic data.

10. The method as in claim 9 wherein the electronic data store includes a searchable database.

11. The method as in claim 9 wherein extracting geographic data includes extracting a zip code from the accessed electronic content.

12. The method as in claim 9 wherein extracting geographic data includes extracting local area exchange information from the accessed electronic content.

13. The method as in claim 12 wherein extracting local area exchange information includes extracting an area code from the accessed electronic content.

14. The method as in claim 9 wherein extracting geographic data includes extracting a city and a state from the accessed electronic content.

15. The method as in claim 9 wherein extracting geographic data includes automatically extracting geographic data from the accessed electronic content.

16. The method as in claim 9 wherein indexing, in the electronic data store, the identified uniform resource locator based on the extracted geographic data includes indexing, in the electronic data store, the identified uniform resource locator and the extracted geographic data.

17. A method of indexing electronic content associated with a uniform resource locator on a network, the method comprising:

traversing a network to identify electronic content associated with a uniform resource locator;

accessing, over the network, the identified electronic content using the uniform resource locator;

extracting business category data from the accessed electronic content without manual user intervention; and

indexing, in an electronic data store, the identified uniform resource locator based on the extracted business category data.

The method as in claim 17 wherein indexing, in the electronic data store, the identified uniform resource locator based on the extracted business category data includes indexing, in the electronic data store, the identified uniform resource locator with a business category code that is based on the extracted business category data.

19. The method as in claim 17 wherein the electronic data store includes a searchable database.

20. The method as in claim 17 wherein extracting business category data includes automatically extracting business category data from the accessed electronic content.
