Abstract

A time-dependent arrival angle is determined at a single receiver station in a towed streamer. Up-going and down-going pressure wavefields are calculated from pressure and vertical particle velocity wavefields measured at the receiver station. Extrapolated up-going and down-going pressure wavefields are generated from the up-going and down-going pressure wavefields displaced by a time delay based upon the time-dependent arrival angle.

Claims

1. A method for wavefield extrapolation in a dual-sensor towed streamer, comprising:

determining a time-dependent arrival angle at a single receiver station in the towed streamer;

calculating up-going and down-going pressure wavefields from pressure and vertical particle velocity wavefields measured at the receiver station; and

generating extrapolated up-going and down-going pressure wavefields from the up-going and down-going pressure wavefields displaced by a time delay based upon the time-dependent arrival angle.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the vertical particle velocity signals are obtained by using accelerometers to measure acceleration signals and determining vertical particle velocity signals from the measured acceleration signals.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the vertical particle velocity signals are obtained by using velocity sensors to measure velocity signals and determining vertical particle velocity signals from the measured velocity signals.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the calculating up-going and down-going pressure wavefields comprises:

recording pressure signals h(t) and vertical particle velocity signals g(t) at a receiver station in the towed streamer;

correcting the recorded pressure signals h(t) and vertical particle velocity signals g(t) for acquisition effects;

calculating up-going and down-going pressure wavefields from the corrected pressure signals h(t) and vertical particle velocity signals g(t); and

extrapolating the calculated up-going and down-going pressure wavefields from receiver depth z_r to another depth z.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the correcting the recorded pressure signals h(t) and vertical particle velocity signals g(t) for acquisition effects comprises:

correcting the recorded pressure signals h(t) and vertical particle velocity signals g(t) for impulse response differences between sensors recording the signals;

correcting the previously corrected pressure signals h(t) and vertical particle velocity signals g(t) for effects of non-vertical arrival angles; and

correcting the twice-corrected vertical particle velocity signals g(t) for effects of tow noise.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the generating extrapolated up-going and down-going pressure wavefields comprises:

selecting a set of arrival angles {φ

constructing a set of delay times {τ

_i} from the set of arrival angles {φ

_j};

constructing a set of up-going pressure wavefields {u_j(t)} from the up-going pressure wavefield u(t) and the set of time delays {τ

_i};

constructing a set of down-going pressure wavefields {d_j(t)} from the down-going pressure wavefield d(t) and the set of time delays {τ

_i};

constructing an extrapolated up-going pressure wavefield u_ext(t) from the set of up-going pressure wavefields {u_j(t)}; and

constructing an extrapolated down-going pressure wavefield d_ext(t) from the set of down-going pressure wavefields {d_j(t)}.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the set of arrival angles {φ

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the set of delay times {τ

_i} is constructed from the set of arrival angles {φ

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the constructing an extrapolated up-going pressure wavefield u_ext(t) comprises:

selecting a time sample from the up-going pressure wavefield u(t);

performing the following for the selected time sample;

determining an arrival angle φ

(t) that corresponds to the selected time sample;

determining a delay time τ

_i in the set of delay times {τ

_i} that corresponds most closely to the determined arrival angle φ

(t);

determining an up-going pressure wavefields u_j(t) in the set of up-going pressure wavefields {u_j(t)} that corresponds to the determined delay time τ

_i;

extracting a time sample from the determined up-going pressure wavefield u_j(t) that corresponds to the selected time sample in the up-going pressure wavefield u(t); and

adding the extracted time sample to the extrapolated up-going pressure wavefields u_ext(t).

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the constructing an extrapolated down-going pressure wavefield u_ext(t) comprises:

selecting a time sample from the down-going pressure wavefield d(t);

performing the following for the selected time sample;

determining an arrival angle φ

(t) that corresponds to the selected time sample;

determining a delay time τ

_i in the set of delay times {τ

_i} that corresponds most closely to the determined arrival angle φ

(t);

determining an down-going pressure wavefields d_j(t) in the set of down-going pressure wavefields {d_j(t)} that corresponds to the determined delay time τ

_i;

extracting a time sample from the determined down-going pressure wavefields d_j(t) that corresponds to the selected time sample in the down-going pressure wavefield d(t); and

adding the extracted time sample to the extrapolated down-going pressure wavefields d_ext(t).
