Abstract

The present invention provides compositions of saratin and methods of use thereof. One aspect of the invention is a method of prevention or mitigation of the development of adhesions, keloids and scars. The adhesions, keloids and scars can be due to surgery, such as plastic surgery or orthopedic surgery, or can be pre-existing scars. Another aspect of the invention is a method for treatment of flexor tendon injuries.

14. A method of treating surgically-induced complications comprising administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of saratin.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said surgically-induced complication is surgically-induced inflammation or surgically-induced adhesions.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein said effective amount of saratin is administered as a topical agent or a coating on an implant.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein said implant is a natural or artificial implant.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein said artificial implant is a medical device.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein said medical device is a plastic surgery implant, a cardiovascular implant or an orthopedic implant.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein said medical device is a cardiac valve, a stent, a graft, a catheter, a spinal disc, a rod, a screw, a plate, a cartilage or an adhesion barrier.

21. The method of claim 17 wherein said natural implant is an organ, a tissue or a cellular implant.

22. The method of claim 17 wherein said natural implant is a vascular graft.

23. The method of claim 15 wherein said surgically-induced adhesions comprises adhesion of platelets or white blood cells.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said white blood cells are lymphocytes, macrophages, monocytes or polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

25. The method of claims 14 wherein said surgery is an orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery or cardiovascular surgery.

26. The method of claims 14 wherein said surgery is tendon reconstructive surgery or cardiac surgery.

27. A method of treating and/or preventing scars and/or keloids comprising administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of saratin.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein said scars and/or keloids are surgically-induced, burn-induced or due to an inflammatory skin disease.

29. The method of claim 27 wherein said scars and/or keloids are due to a plastic surgery, reconstructive and/or transplant surgery.

30. A therapeutic gel formulation comprising about 0.01 mg/mL to about 5.0 mg/mL of saratin and at least one therapeutically acceptable excipient.

31. The formulation of claim 30 further comprising at least one dye.

32. A device comprising an implant and a coating, said coating comprising saratin.

33. The device of claim 32 wherein said implant is a cardio-vascular implant.
