Abstract

A lamp assembly comprises at least one light source such as a high-power LED (106), a housing (heat sink (108), metal base (109) with holes (126), lens (118)) in or on which the light source is located, and a fan (120) adapted to produce a current of air to cool the light source. The fan is arranged to draw air away from the light source through the holes (126) and to eject it from the housing; to this end the fan is preferably located directly underneath the light source in a self-contained package.

Claims

1. A lamp assembly comprising:

a light source;

a fan adapted to produce a current of air to cool the light source; and

a housing in which the light source is disposed, the housing including a baseplate having holes through which a fan draws air to cool the light source

and ejects the air from the housing.

14. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the light source is a high-power LED.

15. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the light source is mounted on a heat sink, the heat sink having at least one hole to allow air flow through the at least one hole.

16. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the fan is mounted on the baseplate at a distance from the light source not substantially greater than a diameter of the fan.

17. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the light source lies on a fan axis.

18. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the baseplate is metallic and disc-shaped.

19. The assembly of claim 15, wherein the fan is mounted on the baseplate at a distance from the light source not substantially greater than a diameter of the fan.

20. The assembly of claim 15, wherein the light source lies on a fan axis.

21. The assembly of claim 16, wherein the light source lies on a fan axis.

22. The assembly of claim 19, wherein the housing is generally cylindrical and the fan is arranged at an end of the housing, a diameter of the fan corresponding to an interior cross-section of the housing.

23. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the light source and the fan are arranged to be powered by a common power supply.

24. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the assembly further includes a circuit adapted to enable the light source to be powered by a main AC.

25. The assembly of claim 24, wherein the circuit is adapted to enable bipolarity of the lamp assembly.

26. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the assembly includes a plurality of light sources located in the housing.

27. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the housing is generally cylindrical and the fan is arranged at an end of the housing, a diameter of the fan corresponding to an interior cross-section of the housing.

28. A lamp apparatus including a plurality of lamp assemblies according to claim 1, further including a fan mounted in a casing.

29. A lamp assembly comprising:

a light source mounted on a heat sink, the heat sink including at least one heat sink hole;

a baseplate having at least one baseplate hole, the heat sink mounted on the baseplate;

a housing in which the light source is disposed; and

a fan disposed at a distance from the light source not substantially greater than a diameter of the fan and arranged such that the light source lies on a fan axis, the fan adapted to draw air through the at least one heat sink hole and the at least one baseplate hole to produce a current of air to cool the light source.

30. The lamp assembly of claim 29, wherein the baseplate is metallic and disc-shaped.

31. The lamp assembly of claim 29, wherein the fan is disposed within the housing.

32. The lamp assembly of claim 29, wherein the fan is disposed at an open end of the housing.
