Abstract

An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

Claims

1. An analyte monitoring device, comprising:

a housing;

a processor operatively coupled to the housing;

an in vitro glucose monitor operatively coupled to the processor and configured to generate a signal based on a fluid sample associated with an analyte concentration;

a display unit coupled to the housing and configured to output one or more information associated the generated signal; and

a communication component operatively coupled to the housing and configured to transmit information associated with the generated signal based on the fluid sample to a drug administration system;

wherein the processor is configured to generate the information associated with the generated signal from the in vitro glucose monitor.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the communication component includes one or more of an RF transmitter or an RF transceiver.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the generated signal based on the fluid sample includes glucose level information.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to determine a drug administration protocol based at least in part of the generated signal based on the fluid sample for transmission to the drug administration system.

5. The device of claim 4 wherein the generated signal based on the fluid sample associated with the analyte concentration correlates to glucose level.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the drug administration system includes one or more of an external infusion pump, an internal infusion pump, a syringe injector, a transdermal delivery system, or an inhalation system.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the communication component is configured to transmit the one or more signals associated with the generated signal to the drug administration system using one or more of an RF communication, an optical communication or a wired communication.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the in vitro glucose monitor generates the signal based on a blood sample.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the one or more information output by the display unit includes one or more of a visual indication, an auditory indication or vibratory indication.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein the visual indication includes one or more of a graphical output, a text output, or a numerical output.

11. The device of claim 1 further including a storage unit operatively coupled to the processor and configured to store one or more of the generated signal or the information associated with the generated signal based on the fluid sample.

12. The device of claim 1 wherein the information associated with the generated signal includes a medication dose.

14. The device of claim 1 wherein the display unit is configured to output trend information related to the analyte concentration.

15. The device of claim 1 wherein the communication component is in signal communication with a sensor control unit and configured to receive sensor data.

16. The device of claim 15 wherein the sensor data includes glucose sensor data.

17. The device of claim 15 wherein the communication component includes an RF receiver in signal communication with an RF transmitter of the sensor control unit.

13. The device of claim 13 wherein the medication dose includes an insulin dose.
