Abstract

Light emitting assembly includes an optical conductor having a pattern of deformities on or in front and back sides of the optical conductor to cause light to be emitted from a light emitting surface on at least one of the sides. At least one of the deformities varies, and at least one planar or curved refractive surface is aligned with at least one light source to redirect a portion of the light from the light source entering the optical conductor in a predetermined manner to cause the light emitted from the light emitting surface to pass through an optical film, which redirects the light through a liquid crystal display with low loss.

Claims

1. A light emitting assembly comprising at least one light source, an optical film with deformities and an optical conductor having front and back sides, and at least one light input surface for receiving light from the light source, the optical conductor having a pattern of deformities on or in the front and back sides to cause light to be emitted from at least one light emitting surface on at least one of the sides in a predetermined output ray angle distribution, at least one of the deformities varies, a transition area between the at least one light source and the light emitting surface, and at least one planar or curved refractive surface on the transition area aligned with the at least one light source to redirect a portion of the light entering the optical conductor in a predetermined manner to cause the light emitted from the light emitting surface to pass through the optical film, which redirects the light such that the light will pass through a liquid crystal display with low loss.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one refractive surface is a recessed cavity.

3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one refractive surface is at least one faceted lens.

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the deformities on the front or back sides of the optical conductor are prismatic.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the pattern of deformities on or in at least one of the sides of the optical conductor varies randomly.

6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the pattern of deformities on or in at least one of the sides of the optical conductor is comprised of individual optical elements.

7. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one light source is a light emitting diode.

8. A light emitting assembly comprising at least one light source, an optical film with deformities and an optical conductor having front and back sides, and at least one light input surface for receiving light from the light source, and a tray that holds the optical conductor and the at least one light source, the optical conductor having a pattern of deformities on or in the front and back sides to cause light to be emitted from at least one light emitting surface on at least one of the sides in a predetermined output ray angle distribution, the deformities on the front and back sides of the optical conductor being different and at least one of the deformities varies, and at least one planar or curved refractive surface on the at least one light input surface aligned with the at least one light source to redirect a portion of the light entering the optical conductor in a predetermined manner to cause the light emitted from the optical conductor to pass through the optical film, which redirects the light such that the light will pass through a liquid crystal display with low loss.

9. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the at least one refractive surface is a recessed cavity.

10. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the at least one refractive surface is at least one faceted lens.

11. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the deformities on the front and back sides of the optical conductor are prismatic.

12. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the pattern of deformities on or in at least one of the sides of the optical conductor varies randomly.

13. The assembly of claim 18 wherein the at least one light source is a light emitting diode.
