Abstract

A renal failure therapy system includes a blood pump; a citrate pump; and a control unit configured to automatically control the blood pump and the citrate pump to achieve a citrate flowrate that is based on a blood flowrate, so that the flowrates are synchronized.

Claims

1. A renal failure therapy method comprising:

pumping blood through a blood circuit of a renal failure therapy machine;

infusing citrate as an anticoagulant; and

controlling a flowrate of the citrate based on a flowrate of the blood automatically so that the flowrates are synchronized.

2. The method of claim 1, which includes infusing citrate into the blood circuit or directly to the patient.

3. The method of claim 1, which includes controlling the flowrate of citrate to deliver a prescribed amount of citrate.

4. The method of claim 1, which is performed during a treatment selected from the group consisting of:

continuous renal replacement therapy, dialysis, hemofiltration and any combination thereof.

5. A renal failure therapy machine configured and arranged to perform the method of claim 1.

6. A renal failure therapy system comprising:

a blood pump;

a citrate pump; and

a control unit configured to automatically control the blood pump and the citrate pump to achieve a citrate flowrate that is based on a blood flowrate, so that the flowrates are synchronized.

7. The renal failure therapy system of claim 6, which includes a filtrate pump, the control unit further configured to (i) perform the equation:

filtrate pump rate=total input rate−

total output rate+prescribed net loss rate, and (ii) control the filtrate pump according to the calculated filtrate pump rate.

8. The renal failure therapy system of claim 7, which includes a sensor, and wherein the control unit is configured to determine the at least one of the total input rate and the total output rate by receiving at least one input/output flowrate that has been sensed by the sensor.

9. The renal failure therapy system of claim 7, which includes an input device operable with the control unit, and wherein the control unit is configured to determine the at least one of the total input rate and the total output rate by receiving at least one input/output flowrate that has been inputted manually into the input device.

10. The renal failure therapy system of claim 6, which is configured to perform a treatment selected from the group consisting of:

continuous renal replacement therapy, dialysis, hemofiltration and any combination thereof.

11. The renal failure therapy system of claim 6, the control unit further configured to control the citrate flowrate to deliver a prescribed amount of citrate.

12. A renal failure therapy method comprising:

configuring a renal failure therapy machine to perform the equation;

filtrate pump rate=total input rate−

total output rate+prescribed net loss rate, wherein the total input rate includes a flowrate of citrate; and

controlling a filtrate pump according to the calculated filtrate pump rate.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein determining at least one of the total input rate and the total output rate includes receiving at least one input/output flowrate that has been sensed by a sensor.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein determining at least one of the total input rate and the total output rate includes receiving at least one input/output flowrate that has been inputted manually.

15. The method of claim 12, which includes synchronizing the flowrate of citrate with a flowrate of blood.
