Abstract

A content-aware digital media storage device includes a host device interface for exchanging digital information with a host device, a memory array for storing digital information received from the host device via the host interface, a peripheral module configured to communicate the digital information stored in the memory array to a receiver located remote from the digital media storage device, and a controller communicatively coupled to the host device interface, the memory array and the peripheral module and configured to interpret directory information associated with the digital information stored in the memory array so as to selectively access said digital information and communicate such accessed digital information to the peripheral module for transmission to the remote receiver. Digital images stored in the memory array may be transmitted to a remote host via a wireless network access point with which the peripheral module of the storage device is associated.

Claims

1. A digital media storage device, comprising:

a housing sized to be accommodated within a digital camera host;

a host interface for receiving digital image information from the digital camera host;

a wireless communication interface;

a controller coupled to the host interface, and the wireless communication interface; and

a memory communicatively coupled to the controller and storing a wireless network configuration utility for the wireless communication interface, said configuration utility including controller-executable instructions for causing said controller to store configuration information for the wireless communication interface to associate with a wireless access point of a wireless network as a file in a directory separate from other directories for storing the digital image information but nevertheless compliant with a file system used by the digital camera host to store said digital image information to said digital media storage device.

The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the memory further stores controller-executable instructions for causing said controller to restrict access to high resolution digital image files stored in an image storage memory of the media card, which image storage memory is accessible to the controller.

3. The digital media storage device of claim 2, wherein the memory further stores controller-executable instructions for causing said controller to permit access to the high resolution digital image files during an authenticated network session.

4. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the housing is sized to be compatible with a Secure Digital (SD) card interface.

5. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the housing is sized to be compatible with a Multi Media Card (MMC) interface.

6. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the housing is sized to be compatible with a Compact Flash (CF) card interface.

7. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the housing is sized to be compatible with a Memory Stick (MS) interface.

8. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the housing is sized to be compatible with a Picture Card (xD) interface.

9. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein the memory further stores controller-executable instructions to cause the controller to mount the digital media storage device, obtain an inventory of files stored thereon, and make modifications to a file system within which said files are cataloged.

10. The digital media storage device of claim 1, wherein said modifications include one or more of:

removing files, renaming files, updating file attributes, and creating new files.

11. A method, comprising automatically associating a wireless radio transceiver of a removable media card having a memory array storing digital images captured by a digital camera with an access point of a wireless network according to configuration information stored in the memory array of the media card and transferring one or more of the digital images from the media card to a computer system at least in part through the wireless network.

A method, comprising exchanging information between two removable media cards via an ad hoc wireless network established between respective wireless radio transceivers of the two removable media cards, the information indicative of proximity of the two removable media cards to one another, and uploading said information from the removable media cards to a computer resource.

13. A method, comprising:

exchanging information between two wireless network transceivers, the information indicative of proximity of the two wireless network transceivers to one another,

uploading said information from the wireless network transceivers to a computer resource remote from each of the wireless network transceivers;

and using said information to initiate a search for social network connections between users associated with each of the wireless network transceivers.

14. A method, comprising transmitting, from a digital camera having a memory storage device and a wireless radio transceiver included therein to an Internet host, a digital image captured by a digital camera and stored in the memory storage device, said transmitting being at least in part through a wireless network which the wireless radio transceiver of the digital camera is associated, and transferring the digital image from the Internet host to an electronic photo album hosted separately from the Internet host.

15. A method, comprising automatically associating a wireless radio transceiver communicatively coupled to a memory array storing digital images captured by a digital camera with an access point of a wireless network according to configuration information stored in the memory array and transferring one or more of the digital images from the memory array to a computer system at least in part through the wireless network.

16. A media card configured with a security layer binding digital images stored in a memory array of the media card to a designated photofinishing service provider.

17. A content-aware digital media storage device comprising a host device interface for exchanging digital information with a host device, a memory array for storing digital information received from the host device via the host interface, a peripheral module configured to communicate with an entity located remote from the digital media storage device with respect to digital information stored in the memory array, and a controller communicatively coupled to the host device interface, the memory array and the peripheral module and configured to interpret directory information associated with the digital information stored in the memory array so as to selectively access said digital information.
