Abstract

Provided in some embodiments is a method of wireless inter-vehicle communication. The method includes storing a message packet in a shared memory location of a first communication device. The shared memory location is wirelessly accessible by one or more other communication devices. The method also includes assessing, at a second communication device, whether or not the message packet stored in the shared memory location of the first communication device is intended to be received at the second communication device and assessing, at the second communication device, whether or not to accept the message packet from the shared memory location of the first communication device. Further, the method includes receiving at least a portion of the message packet at the second communication device if it is determined that the message packet should be accepted from the shared memory location of the first communication device.

Claims

1. A method of wireless inter-vehicle communication, comprising:

storing a message packet in a shared memory location of a first communication device, wherein the shared memory location is wirelessly accessible by one or more other communication devices;

assessing, at a second communication device, whether or not the message packet stored in the shared memory location of the first communication device is intended to be received at the second communication device;

assessing, at the second communication device, whether or not to accept the message packet from the shared memory location of the first communication device; and

if it is determined that the message packet should be accepted from the shared memory location of the first communication device, receiving at least a portion of the message packet at the second communication device.

2. The method of claim 1, comprising providing a rejection message to the first communication device if it is determined that the message packet should not be accepted from the shared memory location of the first communication device.

The method of claim 1, wherein assessing whether or not to accept the message packet from the shared memory location of the first communication device comprises the second communication device prompting a user as to whether or not to accept the message packet from the first communication device.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein prompting the user as to whether or not to accept the message packet from the first communication device, comprises providing at least an identification associated with the first communication device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the message packet in a shared memory location of a first communication device comprises storing the message packet with a file path that is configured to enable identification of the first communication device and the second communication device.

The method of claim 1, wherein storing the message packet in a shared memory location of a first communication device comprises storing the message packet with a file path that includes an identifier associated with the first communication device, an identifier associated with the second communication device and a descriptor of the message packet.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the shared memory location is wirelessly accessible by one or more second communication devices via at least one of Bluetooth, Shared Wireless Access Protocol (SWAP), and Shared Wireless Access Protocol-Cordless Access (SWAP-CA).

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the shared memory location is wirelessly accessible by one or more second communication devices via direct communication between the first communication device and the second communication device in a short-range mode.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the shared memory location is wirelessly accessible by one or more second communication devices via indirect communication between the first communication device and the second communication device in a long-range mode.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein indirect communication between the first communication device and the second communication device in a long-range mode comprises communicating via the one or more other communication devices in ad-hoc fashion.

11. A method of wireless inter-vehicle communication, comprising:

generating, at a first communication device in a first vehicle, a message packet comprising a message and a label indicative of an intended recipient;

storing the message packet in a shared memory location of the first communication device, wherein at least the label indicative of the intended recipient is accessible by one or more other communication devices;

assessing, at a second communication device in a second vehicle and associated with the intended recipient, whether at least a portion of the message packet comprising the label is intended for delivery to at least the second communication device associated with the intended recipient;

assessing, at the second communication device, based at least in part on the label whether at least a portion of the message packet comprising the label is intended for delivery to at least the second communication device associated with the intended recipient;

assessing, at the second communication device associated with the intended recipient, whether or not to receive the message packet; and

receiving, at the second communication device associated with the intended recipient, at least the message of the message packet.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the label indicative of the intended recipient includes a file path.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the file path is indicative of the first communication device, the second communication device, and the message.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the file path comprises an identification of the first communication device, an identification of the second communication device, and a filename associated with the message packet.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the label indicative of the intended recipient comprises a unique identifier associated with one or more of the intended recipients.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the label indicative of the intended recipient comprises a license plate number of a vehicle comprising one or more communication devices associated with the sender and one or more intended recipients of the message.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein storing the message packet in a memory location of the first communication device comprises storing the message packet in a shared folder.

18. The method of claim 11, comprising the second communication device associated with the intended recipient querying one or more communication devices to assess that the message packet is intended for delivery to at least the second communication device associated with the intended recipient.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein communication between the first communication device and the second communication device occurs wirelessly and directly between the two devices.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein communication between the first communication device and the second communication device occurs via only communications devices in the network that are substantially similar to the first and second communication devices.

21. The method of claim 11, wherein communication between the first communication device and the second communication device occurs via hopping between one or more communication devices on the network.

22. The method of claim 11, wherein transmission of communication between the first communication device and the second communication device occurs via a Bluetooth protocol.

23. An inter-vehicle communication device, comprising:

a vehicle communication device configured to be located in a vehicle, comprising;

an identification memory location comprising a unique identifier associated with the vehicle;

a shared memory location accessible by other communication devices on an inter-vehicle communication network; and

a wireless communication device configured to exchange data directly with one or more other vehicle communication devices on the inter-vehicle communication network.

24. An inter-vehicle communication system, comprising:

an inter-vehicle communication network, comprising;

a first vehicle communication device located in a first vehicle, comprising;

an identification memory location comprising a first unique identifier associated with the first vehicle; and

a shared memory location wirelessly accessible by one or more second communication devices on the inter-vehicle communication network; and

at least one of the second vehicle communication devices located in a second vehicle.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein at least one of the second vehicle communication devices is located in a second vehicle and is configured to wirelessly access the shared memory location of the first vehicle communication device to assess whether a message packet stored in the shared memory location is intended to be received by the second vehicle communication device.

26. The system of claim 24, wherein the second vehicle communication device is configured to prompt a user as to whether or not the second vehicle communication device should accept a message stored in the shared memory location.
