Abstract

A system and method for providing integrated driver skill recognition. The system includes an input switch that receives maneuver identifier signals that identify a plurality of different vehicle maneuvers and data that represents the identified maneuvers. The system also includes a plurality of skill classification processors that selectively receive the data from the input switch depending on the maneuver identifier signals, where a separate skill classification processor is provided for each separate type of maneuver. The skill classification processors classifying the maneuver to determine the driver'"'"'s driving skill based on the data and provide skill classification signals. An output switch responsive to the skill classification signals from the skill classification processors.

Claims

1. A system for classifying a driver'"'"'s driving skill of a vehicle, said system comprising:

an input switch responsive to maneuver identifier signals that identify a plurality of different vehicle maneuvers and data that represents the identified maneuvers;

a plurality of skill classification processors that selectively receive the data from the input switch depending on the maneuver identifier signals where a separate skill classification processor is provided for each separate type of maneuver, said skill classification processor classifying the maneuver to determine a driver'"'"'s driving skill based on the data and providing skill classification signals; and

an output switch responsive to the skill classification signals from the skill classification processors.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the input switch is also responsive to traffic and road condition signals that identify traffic and road conditions.

3. The system according to claim 1 wherein the skill classification processors use a classification technique selected from the group comprising fuzzy logic, clustering, neural networks, self-organizing maps and threshold-based logic.

4. The system according to claim 1 wherein the skill classification processors use discriminant features derived or obtained from the data to classify the driving skill.

The system according to claim 4 wherein the discriminant features are derived or obtained from the group comprising vehicle yaw rate, vehicle lateral acceleration, vehicle speed, brake pedal position, brake pedal force, throttle percentage, distance to a preceding vehicle and distance to a following vehicle.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein the skill classification processors use a tightly-coupled incorporation to classify the maneuver to determine a driver'"'"'s driving skill.

7. The system according to claim 1 wherein the skill classification processors use a select/switch incorporation to classify the maneuver to determine a driver'"'"'s driving skill.

8. The system according to claim 1 wherein the skill classification processors use a coupled-scaling to classify the maneuver.

9. The system according to claim 1 wherein each skill classification processor includes an original features processor, a feature extraction processor, a feature selection processor and a classifier for each separate type of maneuver.

The system according to claim 9 wherein the original features processor is responsive to the data and provides original features of the maneuver in the data, the feature extraction processor is responsive to the original features from the original features processor, traffic condition signals that identify traffic conditions and road condition signals that identify road condition signals, said feature extraction processor extracting discriminant features from the original features, traffic condition signals and road condition signals, said features selection processor selecting certain ones of the extracted discriminant features, and said classifier classifying the selected features to provide the style classification signals.

The system according to claim 9 wherein the original features processor is responsive to the data and provides original features of the maneuver in the stored data, the feature extraction processor is responsive to the original features and extract discriminant features from the data identifying the maneuver, said feature selection processor selecting certain ones of the extracted features and the classifier is responsive to traffic condition signals identifying traffic conditions and road condition signals identifying road conditions, and classifying the maneuver based on the road condition signals, the traffic condition signals and the selected features.

The system according to claim 1 wherein each classification processor is separated into four separate channels including a first channel for light traffic and good road conditions, a second channel for light traffic and moderate road conditions, a third channel for moderate traffic and good road conditions and a fourth channel for moderate traffic and moderate road conditions, each channel including an original features processor, a feature extraction processor, a feature selection processor and a classifier.

13. The system according to claim 12 wherein the original features processor is responsive to the data.

14. A system for classifying a driver'"'"'s driving skill of a vehicle, said system comprising:

a plurality of vehicle sensors providing sensor measurement signals;

a traffic and road condition recognition processor responsive to the sensor signals, said traffic and road condition recognition processor providing traffic and road condition signals identifying traffic conditions and road conditions; and

a skill characterization processor responsive to maneuver identifier signals that identify a plurality of different vehicle maneuvers, data that represents the identified maneuvers and the traffic condition signals and the road conditions signals, said skill characterization processor including an input switch responsive to the maneuver identifier signals and the data, a plurality of skill classification processors that selectively receive the data from the input switch depending on the maneuver identifier signals, where a separate skill classification processor is provided for each separate type of maneuver, said skill classification processors classifying the maneuver to determine a driver'"'"'s driving skill based on the data and providing style classification signals, and an output switch responsive to the skill classification signals from the style classification processors.

15. The system according to claim 14 wherein the skill classification processors use discriminant features derived or obtained from the data to classify the driving skill.

16. The system according to claim 14 wherein each skill classification processor includes an original features processor, a feature extraction processor, a feature selection processor and a classifier for each separate maneuver.

The system according to claim 16 wherein the original features processor is responsive to the data and provides original features of the maneuver in the data, the feature extraction processor is responsive to the original features from the original features processor, traffic condition signals that identify traffic conditions and road condition signals that identify road condition signals, said feature extraction processor extracting discriminant features from the original features, traffic condition signals and road condition signals, said features selection processor selecting certain ones of the extracted discriminant features, and said classifier classifying the selected features to provide the skill classification signals.

The system according to claim 17 wherein the original features processor is responsive to the data and provides original features of the maneuver in the stored data, the feature extraction processor is responsive to the original features and extract discriminant features from the data identifying the maneuver, said feature selection processor selecting certain ones of the extracted features and the classifier is responsive to traffic condition signals identifying traffic conditions and road condition signals identifying road conditions, and classifying the maneuver based on the road condition signals, the traffic condition signals and the selected features.

The system according to claim 14 wherein each classification processor is separated into four separate channels including a first channel for light traffic and good road conditions, a second channel for light traffic and moderate road conditions, a third channel for moderate traffic and good road conditions and a fourth channel for moderate traffic and moderate road conditions, each channel including an original features processor, a feature extraction processor, a feature selection processor and a classifier.
