Abstract

Athletic performance monitoring systems and methods, many of which utilize, in some manner, global positioning satellite (“GPS”) data, provide data and information to athletes and/or to equipment used by athletes during an athletic event. Such systems and methods may provide route information to athletes and/or their trainers, e.g., for pre-event planning, goal setting, and calibration purposes. Such systems and methods optionally may provide real time information to the athlete while the event takes place, e.g., to assist in reaching the pre-set goals. Additionally, data and information collected by such systems and methods may assist in post-event analysis for athletes and their trainers, e.g., to evaluate past performances and to assist in improving future performances.

Claims

1. An athletic performance monitoring system, comprising:

a global positioning monitor that receives satellite signals;

a physical performance monitor that monitors acceleration;

a processor programmed with computer-executable instructions to cause the athletic performance monitoring system to perform the steps comprising;

(a) determining when satellite signal data is available;

(b) when satellite signal data is available, determining speed and distance of an athlete with data contained in the satellite signals received at the global positioning monitor; and

(c) when satellite signal data is not available, determining speed and distance of the athlete with the acceleration monitored by the physical performance monitor.

2. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including a display that displays speed and distance information.

3. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further programmed with computer-executable instructions to calibrate the physical performance monitor with data from the global positioning monitor.

4. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including a physiological monitor.

5. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 4, wherein the physiological monitor comprises a heart rate monitor.

6. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 4, wherein the physiological monitor comprises a pulse monitor.

7. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 4, wherein the physiological monitor comprises a temperature monitor.

8. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including an audio player.

9. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 8, wherein the audio player is configured to play MP3 files.

10. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including a data transmitter.

11. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including a data receiver.

12. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including a cell phone link.

13. The athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1, further including an interface configured to exchange data with a computer device.

14. A computer-readable medium containing computer-executable instructions for causing an athletic performance monitoring system to perform the steps comprising:

(a) receiving satellite signals;

(b) receiving acceleration data;

(c) determining when satellite signal data is available;

(d) when satellite signal data is available, determining speed and distance of an athlete with the satellite signal data; and

(e) when satellite signal data is not available, determining speed and distance of the athlete with the acceleration data.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 14, further containing computer-executable instructions to cause the athletic performance monitoring system to utilize satellite signal data to calibrate speed and distance determinations made with the acceleration data.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 14, further containing computer-executable instructions to cause the athletic performance monitoring system to play music.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 14, further containing computer-executable instructions to cause the athletic performance monitoring system to calculate heart rate.

18. A method of determining athletic performance comprising:

(a) receiving satellite signals at a global positioning monitor;

(b) determining acceleration at a physical performance monitor;

(c) determining when satellite signal data is available;

(d) when satellite signal data is available, at a processor determining speed and distance of an athlete with data contained in the satellite signals received at the global positioning monitor; and

(e) when satellite signal data is not available, at the processor determining speed and distance of the athlete with the acceleration determined by the physical performance monitor.

19. The method of claim 18, further including generating music with an audio player.

20. The method of claim 18, further including determining heart rate of the athlete with a heart rate monitor.
