Abstract

A system for generating electricity includes a pump operable to convert wave motion from a body of water into mechanical energy. The pump includes an input port through which an operating fluid can enter the pump and an output port through which the operating fluid can exit the pump. A first outlet line and a second outlet line are fluidly coupled to the output port of the pump. A first reservoir is fluidly connected to the first outlet line, and a second reservoir is fluidly connected to the second outlet line, both reservoirs being selectively capable of receiving operating fluid driven through the output port.

Claims

1. A buoyancy pump comprising:

a buoyancy block operable to reciprocally move in response to wave action in a body of water to pump an operating fluid using the energy of waves within the body of water;

a piston slidably disposed within a piston chamber;

a piston shaft having a plurality of nested tubes positioned between the buoyancy block and the piston; and

a ball fitting disposed at each end of the piston shaft, a first of the ball fittings being received by a ball joint associated with the buoyancy block, a second of the ball fittings being received by a ball joint associated with the piston;

wherein the piston is reciprocally moveable in a first direction and a second direction in response to movement of the buoyancy block, the piston moving in the second direction to draw an operating fluid into the piston chamber and moving in the first direction to force the operating fluid out of the piston chamber.

2. The buoyancy pump according to claim 1, wherein the ball fittings and ball joints protect the piston shaft from angular movements of the buoyancy block about axes perpendicular to the reciprocating motion of the buoyancy block.

3. The buoyancy pump according to claim 1 further comprising:

a buoyancy block housing defining a buoyancy chamber through which a first fluid may flow; and

wherein the buoyancy block is disposed within the buoyancy chamber.

4. The buoyancy pump according to claim 3, wherein the first fluid and the operating fluid are the same.

5. The buoyancy pump according to claim 3, wherein the first fluid and the operating fluid are water from the body of water.

6. The buoyancy pump according to claim 1, wherein:

the plurality of nested tubes includes an inner tube, an intermediate tube, and an outer tube, the inner tube being positioned within the intermediate tube and the intermediate tube being positioned within the outer tube;

each of the plurality of nested tubes includes threads on each end;

each ball fitting includes a tiered shaft having a minor portion, an intermediate portion, and a major portion, each of the minor portion, the intermediate portion and the major portion having threads complimentary to the threads on one of the plurality of nested tubes.

7. The buoyancy pump according to claim 6, wherein:

each ball fitting is connected to the piston shaft by threadingly mating the minor portion and the inner tube, the intermediate portion and the intermediate tube, and the major portion and the outer tube.

8. The buoyancy pump according to claim 1, wherein:

each ball joint includes a cap portion and a locking portion;

the cap portion includes a semi-spherical recess for receiving a ball end of the ball fitting; and

the locking portion includes a passage having a partially spherical shoulder region adjacent to a tapered region.

9. The buoyancy pump according to claim 8, wherein the locking portion is removably connected to the cap portion.

10. The buoyancy pump according to claim 8, wherein the tapered region is tapered outward as the tapered region extends from the partially spherical shoulder region to allow rotation of the piston shaft about the ball end.

11. The buoyancy pump according to claim 1, wherein:

the plurality of nested tubes includes an inner tube, an intermediate tube, and an outer tube, the inner tube being positioned within the intermediate tube and the intermediate tube being positioned within the outer tube;

each of the plurality of nested tubes includes threads on each end;

each ball fitting includes a tiered shaft having a minor portion, an intermediate portion, and a major portion, each of the minor portion, the intermediate portion and the major portion having threads complimentary to the threads on one of the plurality of nested tubes;

each ball fitting is connected to the piston shaft by threadingly mating the minor portion and the inner tube, the intermediate portion and the intermediate tube, and the major portion and the outer tube; and

each ball joint includes a cap portion and a locking portion, the cap portion having a semi-spherical recess for receiving a ball end of the ball fitting, the locking portion including a passage having a partially spherical shoulder region adjacent to a tapered region, the tapered region being tapered outward as the tapered region extends from the partially spherical shoulder region to allow rotation of the piston shaft about the ball end.

12. A buoyancy pump comprising:

a buoyancy block operable to reciprocally move in response to wave action in a body of water to pump an operating fluid using the energy of waves within the body of water;

a piston slidably disposed within a piston chamber;

a piston shaft positioned between the buoyancy block and the piston; and

a ball fitting disposed at an end of the piston shaft, the ball fitting being received by a ball joint associated with one of the buoyancy block and the piston;

wherein the piston is reciprocally moveable in a first direction and a second direction in response to movement of the buoyancy block, the piston moving in the second direction to draw an operating fluid into the piston chamber and moving in the first direction to force the operating fluid out of the piston chamber.

13. The buoyancy pump according to claim 12, wherein the ball fitting and ball joint protect the piston shaft from angular movements of the buoyancy block about axes perpendicular to the reciprocating motion of the buoyancy block.

14. The buoyancy pump according to claim 12 further comprising:

a buoyancy block housing defining a buoyancy chamber through which a first fluid may flow; and

wherein the buoyancy block is disposed within the buoyancy chamber.

15. The buoyancy pump according to claim 12, wherein:

the ball fitting is threadingly connected to the piston shaft.

16. The buoyancy pump according to claim 12, wherein:

the ball joint includes a cap portion and a locking portion;

the cap portion includes a semi-spherical recess for receiving a ball end of the ball fitting; and

the locking portion includes a passage having a partially spherical shoulder region adjacent to a tapered region.

17. The buoyancy pump according to claim 16, wherein the locking portion is removably connected to the cap portion.

18. The buoyancy pump according to claim 16, wherein the tapered region is tapered outward as the tapered region extends from the partially spherical shoulder region to allow rotation of the piston shaft about the ball end.

19. The buoyancy pump according to claim 12, further comprising:

a second ball fitting disposed at a second end of the piston shaft, the ball fitting being received by a second ball joint associated with another of the buoyancy block and the piston.

20. The buoyancy pump according to claim 12, further comprising:

a second ball fitting disposed at a second end of the piston shaft, the ball fitting being received by a second ball joint associated with another of the buoyancy block and the piston;

wherein each of the first and second ball fittings is threadingly connected to the piston shaft;

wherein each ball joint includes a cap portion and a locking portion, the cap portion having a semi-spherical recess for receiving a ball end of the ball fitting, the locking portion including a passage having a partially spherical shoulder region adjacent to a tapered region, the tapered region being tapered outward as the tapered region extends from the partially spherical shoulder region to allow rotation of the piston shaft about the ball end.
