Abstract

A system and method for searching content. The method comprises receiving from a first user metadata relating to generating a guide for content. A guide is generated relating to the content. The guide facilitates navigation of the content on a device. The metadata is forwarded to a metadata analyzer where the metadata is processed to produce processed metadata. The processed metadata is forwarded to an index server. An index is generated for the content based on the metadata at the index server. A query is received from a second user, the index is searched and a result is forwarded to the second user in response to the query. The result includes at least a uniform resource identifier relating to at least some of content. The second user may add additional metadata relating to the content.

Claims

1. A method for enabling search of content, the method comprising:

receiving from a first user metadata relating to generating a guide for content;

generating the guide for the first user relating to the content, using the metadata, the guide facilitating navigation of the content on a first device;

receiving the metadata at a metadata analyzer;

processing the metadata at the metadata analyzer to produce processed metadata;

forwarding the processed metadata to an index server; and

generating an index for the content based on the processed metadata at the index

server.

2. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a query from a second user; and

forwarding a result to the second user in response to the query, the result including at least a uniform resource identifier relating to at least some of content.

3. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the first and second users are distinct.

4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the content consisting of a member of a group comprising:

an audio file, a video file, and an image file image.

5. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the guide includes a menu hierarchy used in navigating the content on the first device.

6. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising:

receiving additional metadata relating to the content from the second user; and

updating the index based on the additional metadata.

7. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the metadata is received from a second device including a keyboard interface; and

the method further comprises forwarding the content to the first device, wherein the first device does not include a keyboard interface.

8. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein the first device is a television and

the forwarding the content to the first device includes converting a format of the content.

9. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the metadata includes a uniform

resource identifier.

10. The method as recited in claim 9, wherein the metadata includes a user identification, title, description, source, and at least one tag.

11. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

generating additional metadata, at the metadata analyzer, relating to the content based on metadata embedded within the content; and

the generating the index includes generating the index using the additional metadata.

12. The method as recited in claim 1, farther comprising generating a library of the content including the guide.

13. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a user ID; and

generating user metadata, at the metadata analyzer, corresponding to the user ID.

14. The method as recited in claim 13, wherein the user metadata includes information indicating whether the metadata relating to the content included explicit or spam fields.

15. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the forwarding a result includes forwarding a plurality of results and the method further comprises ranking the results.

16. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising ranking the index based on a member of a group consisting of:

a number of users that have the content in their library, a number of times the content is played by users, a source of the content, and a rating given by users.

34. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the content includes a URI disposed in a web page.

17. A system for enabling search of content, the system comprising:

a first device connected to the internet;

an application effective to receive metadata relating to generating a guide for content, the application further effective to generate a guide for a first user relating to the content using the metadata, the guide facilitating navigation of the content on a second device;

a metadata analyzer connected to the media manager server, the metadata analyzer effective to receive and process the metadata to produce processed metadata; and

an index server connected to the metadata analyzer, the index server effective to

receive the processed metadata from the metadata analyzer and to generate an index for the content based on the processed metadata.

18. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the index server is further effective to receive a query from a second user and forward a result to the second user in response to

the query, the result including at least a uniform resource identifier relating to at least some of content.

19. The system as recited in claim 18, wherein the first and second users are distinct.

20. The system as recited in claim 17, comprises a member of a group consisting of an audio file, a video file, and an image file.

21. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the guide includes a menu hierarchy used in navigating the content on the second device.

22. The system as recited in claim 18, wherein:

the metadata analyzer is further effective to receive additional metadata relating to the content from the second user; and

the index server is further effective to update the index based on the additional metadata.

23. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein:

the first device includes a keyboard interface; and

the system further comprises a media server effective to forward the content to the second device, wherein the second device does not include a keyboard interface.

24. The system as recited in claim 23, wherein the second device is a television

and the media server is effective to convert a format of the content.

25. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the metadata includes a uniform resource identifier.

26. The system as recited in claim 25, wherein the metadata includes a user identification, title, description, source, and at least one tag.

27. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein:

the metadata analyzer further generates additional metadata relating to the content based on metadata embedded within the content; and

the index server generates the index using the additional metadata.

28. The system as recited in claim 17, further comprising a library including the guide and connected to the first device.

29. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the metadata analyzer further receives a user ID, and generates user metadata corresponding to the user ID.

30. The system as recited in claim 29, wherein the user metadata includes information indicating whether the metadata relating to the content includes explicit or spam fields.

31. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the index server ranks the results.

32. The system as recited in claim 31, wherein the index server ranks the results based on a member of a group consisting of:

a number of users that have the content in their library, a number of times the content is played by users, a source of the content, and a rating given by users.

33. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the application is disposed on the device.

35. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the content includes a URI disposed in a web page.

36. A method of searching for content, comprising:

receiving, from at least one of a plurality of users, metadata indicative of content from a network;

generating a personal guide for the at least one user relating to the content according to the metadata;

generating an index for the content by processing the metadata;

receiving a plurality of queries from any of the plurality of users; and

searching the index for retrieving the content in response to each said query.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the metadata comprises a descriptive textual representation of the content.

38. The method of claim 36, wherein the metadata comprises attributes arranged in a hierarchy, the generating being performed according to the hierarchy.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein the metadata is received from a plurality of users, further comprising aggregating the metadata from the plurality of users.

40. The method of claim 39, further comprising using the aggregated metadata for searching additional metadata of additional content and indexing the additional content index for the content by processing the additional metadata.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein the metadata is compared with additional metadata from at least one additional user, further comprising rating the metadata according to the comparison.

42. The method of claim 36, wherein said index being used for providing at least one watch recommendation to said plurality of users.

43. The method of claim 36, wherein said index being used for discovering a match between at least two of said plurality of users.

44. The method of claim 36, wherein the index is stored on a first device connected to the network and the at least one query being sent from a plurality of second devices connected to the network.

45. The method of claim 36, wherein the content is untagged content.

46. A system of searching for content, comprising:

an input interface for receiving, from at least one of a plurality of users, metadata indicative of content from a network;

a computing unit for generating a personal guide for the at least one user relating to the content according to the metadata;

a metadata analyzer for processing the metadata;

an index server for generating an index for the content according to the processed metadata; and

a search engine for receiving a plurality of queries from any of the plurality of users; and

searching the index for retrieving the content in response to each said query.
