Abstract

A method performed by a computer system. The method includes storing a version of a mass-produced printed paper, identifying at least a subset of characters within the version, and in response to the identified subset, forming at least one hyperlink within the version, the version being displayable on a display device as a likeness of the paper including an indicator of a hyperlink.

Claims

1. A method performed by a computer system, comprising:

processing a first electronic version of a paper displayable on a display device as a likeness of the paper using a content preparation system to detect a reference associated with first content that is displayable at a first location in the likeness, wherein the detected reference is associated with a second location in the likeness; and

forming a link in the first electronic version of the paper such that when the likeness of the paper is displayed on the display device the link is embedded in the likeness in association with the first content displayed at the first location in the likeness and the link is user-selectable to cause an operation associated with the second location.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the paper is at least one of the following:

a newspaper, a magazine, a journal or a book.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises displaying second content on the display device that is associated with the second location.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the second content is a plain text version of at least a portion of the likeness of the paper associated with the second location.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the likeness of the paper is displayed on the display device using a first program and the second content is displayed on the display device using a second program.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the second location is a website and the second program is a browser.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises executing a script on the display device.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising obtaining a second electronic version of the paper and translating the obtained second electronic version into the first electronic version displayable as the likeness on the display device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the processing of the first electronic version to detect a link and the formation of the link is done during the translation of the second electronic version into the first electronic version.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises displaying second content retrieved from the second location in association with the likeness.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the operation occurs external to the likeness of the paper.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the paper is at least one of the following:

a newspaper, a magazine, a journal or a book.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the operation comprises displaying second content on the display device that is associated with the second location.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the second content is a plain text version of at least a portion of the likeness of the paper associated with the second location.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the likeness of the paper is displayed on the display device using a first program and the second content is displayed on the display device using a second program.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the second location is a website and the second program is a browser.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the operation comprises executing a script on the display device.

19. The system of claim 10, wherein the content preparation computer is for:

obtaining a second electronic version of the paper and translating the obtained second electronic version into the first electronic version displayable as the likeness on the display device.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the processing of the first electronic version to detect a link and the formation of the link is done during the translation of the second electronic version into the first electronic version.

23. A tangible computer readable storage medium, comprising instructions for:

processing a first electronic version of a paper displayable on a display device as a likeness of the paper using a content preparation system to detect a reference associated with first content that is displayable at a first location in the likeness, wherein the detected reference is associated with a second location in the likeness; and

forming a link in the first electronic version of the paper such that when the likeness of the paper is displayed on the display device the link is embedded in the likeness in association with the first content displayed at the first location in the likeness and the link is user-selectable to cause an operation associated with the second location. The computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the paper is at least one of the following;

a newspaper, a magazine, a journal or a book.

24. The computer readable storage medium of claim 23, wherein the paper is at least one of the following:

a newspaper, a magazine, a journal or a book.

25. The computer readable storage medium of claim 23, wherein the operation comprises displaying second content on the display device that is associated with the second location.

26. The computer readable storage medium of claim 25, wherein the second content is a plain text version of at least a portion of the likeness of the paper associated with the second location.

27. The computer readable storage medium of claim 26, wherein the likeness of the paper is displayed on the display device using a first program and the second content is displayed on the display device using a second program.

28. The computer readable storage medium of claim 27, wherein the second location is a website and the second program is a browser.

29. The computer readable storage medium of claim 23, wherein the operation comprises executing a script on the display device

30. The computer readable storage medium of claim 23, further comprising instructions for obtaining a second electronic version of the paper and translating the obtained second electronic version into the first electronic version displayable as the likeness on the display device.

31. The computer readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the processing of the first electronic version to detect a link and the formation of the link is done during the translation of the second electronic version into the first electronic version.

32. The computer readable storage medium of claim 23, wherein the operation comprises displaying second content retrieved from the second location in association with the likeness.

33. The computer readable storage medium of claim 23, wherein the operation occurs external to the likeness of the paper.

12. A system, comprising a content preparation system for:

processing a first electronic version of a paper displayable on a display device as a likeness of the paper using a content preparation system to detect a reference associated with first content that is displayable at a first location in the likeness, wherein the detected reference is associated with a second location in the likeness; and

forming a link in the first electronic version of the paper such that when the likeness of the paper is displayed on the display device the link is embedded in the likeness in association with the first content displayed at the first location in the likeness and the link is user-selectable to cause an operation associated with the second location.

21. The system of claim 12, wherein the operation comprises displaying second content retrieved from the second location in association with the likeness.

22. The system of claim 12, wherein the operation occurs external to the likeness of the paper.
