Abstract

An infusion pump includes a housing; a user interface carried by the housing; a pump actuator positioned by the housing so as to be able to actuate a medical fluid pump member; and wherein the user interface and the pump actuator are powered interchangeably by a first, rechargeable battery unit and a second battery unit, both the first and second battery units configured to power the user interface and the pump actuator at a place for which outside power is unavailable, and such that the user interface and the pump actuator can be powered by the second battery unit while the first battery unit is being recharged.

Claims

1. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a user interface carried by the housing;

a pump actuator positioned by the housing so as to be able to actuate a medical fluid pump member; and

wherein the user interface and the pump actuator are powered interchangeably by a first, rechargeable battery unit and a second battery unit, both the first and second battery units configured to power the user interface and the pump actuator at a place for which outside power is unavailable, and such that the user interface and the pump actuator can be powered by the second battery unit while the first battery unit is being recharged.

2. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the pump actuator is a syringe pump actuator.

3. The infusion pump of claim 2, wherein the syringe pump actuator is operable with at least one of a syringe barrel size sensor and a syringe plunger sensor.

4. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the first, rechargeable battery unit and the second battery unit have an at least substantially same shape.

5. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the first, rechargeable battery unit and the second battery unit fit into a same slot in the housing.

6. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein a portion of at least one of the first and second battery units has a contour that matches a contour of the housing.

7. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the first, rechargeable battery unit includes electronics configured such that the user interface and the pump actuator are powered by outside power when the outside power is connected to the first, rechargeable battery unit.

8. The infusion pump of claim 1, which includes a load cell powered interchangeably by the first, rechargeable and second battery units, the load cell positioned and arranged to enable a tube occlusion determination to be made.

9. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first, rechargeable and second battery units is configured to transfer data to the user interface.

10. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the second battery unit is a replaceable battery unit or a rechargeable battery unit.

11. The infusion pump of claim 1, which includes a mechanism configured to releasably lock the first, rechargeable and replaceable battery units interchangeably in place.

13. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable battery unit is a first battery unit, and which includes a second battery unit that can be releasably secured to the housing in place of the rechargeable battery unit when the rechargeable battery unit is being recharged.

14. The infusion pump of claim 13, wherein the second battery unit is a rechargeable battery unit or a replaceable battery unit.

15. The infusion pump of claim 13, wherein the second battery unit is shaped at least substantially the same as the rechargeable battery unit.

16. The infusion pump of claim 13, wherein the second battery unit fits into a same slot in the housing as does the first battery unit.

12. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a user interface carried by the housing;

a pump actuator positioned by the housing so as to be able to actuate a medical fluid pump member; and

a rechargeable battery unit for powering the pump actuator and user interface, the rechargeable battery unit releasably secured to the housing and including;

(i) at least one rechargeable battery and (ii) a transformer to convert a line voltage into a voltage useable by the at least one rechargeable battery, such that the rechargeable battery unit can be removed from the housing and the at least one rechargeable battery can be recharged by the line voltage.

17. The infusion pump of claim 12, wherein the rechargeable battery unit includes electronics configured such that the user interface and the pump actuator are powered by outside power when the outside power is connected to the rechargeable battery unit.

18. The infusion pump of claim 17, wherein the electronics includes a diode mechanism.

19. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a user interface carried by the housing;

a pump actuator positioned by the housing so as to be able to actuate a medical fluid pump member;

at least one of a pump disposable sensor and a load cell positioned and arranged to enable a tube occlusion determination to be made; and

a rechargeable battery unit releasably secured to the housing for powering the pump actuator, the user interface, and the at least one of the pump disposable sensor and load cell.

20. The infusion pump of claim 19, wherein the pump actuator is syringe pump actuator, the pump sensor being at least one of a syringe barrel size sensor and a syringe plunger sensor.
